This just gave me the idea for a video: "7 multiplayer modes we never asked for but somehow still got".
Like remember when everything needed a multiplayer mode? God Of War Ascension, Ninja Gaiden 3, Batman Arkham Origins all had multiplayer modes. And no one wanted these.

Tomb Raider (2013) as well. Also has a bunch of achievements related to multiplayer except that no one plays it so no hope of getting them.

Speedportalball could have turned into a motionsickness induced barf fest for all concerned, folk can adjust to portal travel if they can see it coming but remove that control aspect and nausea will follow.
Invasion modes are fine in theory but without proper anticheat systems get ruined.
Can you imagine a VR Speed Portal Ball? That's a bad acid trip waiting to happen.
I feel like the McFlurry machine intestinal portal would just make the "getting backstabbed because you've left for the bathroom" problem much worse, Luke.

But it would make things unpleasant for anyone attempting the backstab.

RE : Mario Sunshine multiplayer. I think people HAVE played it. It's called Splatoon. No, seriously. I bet they pulled it for time/lack of internet support on gamecube and kept the idea in their back pocket.

Code Vein had some framework of PvP code in the game. It ended up repurposed into being location-based "lost invasions" where you fought several waves of enemies. These would typically guard otherwise easy to access items that were usually useful.
Mario Sunshine multiplayer being a precursor to Splatoon actually makes a lot of sense.
I know nobody left cares, but Cyberpunk is actually playable now and something close-ish to what we expected.
I get why they've (and people in general) have given up on it (Witcher 4 and all that), but if you avoided it because of the horrendous launch state, grab in a sale and it's good.

@@Gatorade69 Well CDPR made the mistake of telling players what their ACTUAL plans were, and not just fluffy marshmallow promises that had not substance.
Then plans changed and the devs got hate mail for features they wanted to add but failed to.
At any rate the multiplayer in CP2077 seems obvious.... and the GTAO comparison is probably pretty on the nose. Just look at CPRed(the TTRPG books). Imagine a digital version of a TTRPG set in the world of CP2077. Problem CP2077 has with multiplayer is that it's got a story that is far too linear. and it's not even a STRAIGHT line.
I did just that, grabbed it on a sale and may start it soon, want to see what kind of world they built.

@@Gatorade69 Oh I know. They released demo footage of players doing stuff like wall-crawling. But they had to remove wall-crawling. The ability worked properly... except that.... it drove the AIs insane.
In theory they could have eventually found a solution to fix it, but...time is money, and they were short on both. Yeah, that's just one example.
I miss the days when you could gather four friends and play a story mode on the same screen
There is a multiplayer game with portal guns & balls. It's called Splitgate and it's free & very good, actually. The main ball mode involves just holding on to the ball & trying not to get killed, as your team defends you & interferes with the opposition. You can also boop people with the ball for an instant kill, if you can get close enough.
As for the pandemic, you'd think working from home is exactly what's needed to end up with a good online multiplayer mode..
It’s just a shame most “people “ are bots now. Still, it’s insane how people pull of some of those tricks.
@@IamaPERSON I haven't played for a month or so because I've not been up for that much hectic, but there weren't too many bots about in casual last time I tried it. They rejigged the modes to combine a few together into playlists & that seemed to help a lot.

Video idea: The opposite! Multiplayer modes you wish WERE cancelled but were not! Im thinking tomb raider.... that multiplayer was god awful and they even tied achievements to it 😭
Now we need a list of games with multiplayer we never asked for. I'm looking at you Fallout 76!!

The original Luigi’s mansion might have had a coop mode as data miners were able to find a Mario model that was taller to fit Luigi’s animations. They were also able to mod back a split screen and play a second Luigi that couldn’t open doors but was mostly controllable
I miss frivolous multiplayer modes. I've been playing games recently, and thinking about how much I would love Deathloop Deathmatch, or Ghost Wire Tokyo Team Deathmatch. That's why I'm so happy when games like Ghost of Tsushima or Returnal get multiplayer, because it reminds me of the days where we'd get stuff like Half Life 2 Deathmatch.
I really dont. Completionist’s bane they are. That said i’m all for things like GoT Legends.
@@300IQPrower that's why I prefer the separate games/updates the most. You are 100% right on how things like Uncharted or Assassin's Creed Multiplayer will mess things up, but when it's a cheap/free standalone DLC, it's like getting a second wave of a game.
Isn't Returnal's multiplayer a co-op thing (aka not deathmatch)?
@@sinteleon it is, but I still appreciate it as an added feature. I only mentioned Deathmatch since that was the mood I was going for, but I also appreciate the addition of things like Coop in Portal and the alike
Ah, you missed "Bottles' Revenge" from Banjo Tooie, where Bottles the mole gets angry at being dead, and the second player can use him to posess any normal enemy on screen to harass the bear and bird. Or help, if you're inclined?
It works pretty well with only a little hackery to enable it.

I think a fair amount of chaos is good and all, but I think the issue Valve had is that it would get out of hand way too fast and, especially if you taking it seriously, you wouldn’t be able to tell what’s going on

Favorite canceled multi-player mode Ive head of was Shadow of the Colossus. In early dev there was going to be way more Colossuses, and 4 players.
Wasn't there supposed to originally be like 32 bosses instead of the final 15, or 16 bosses that were added? Some of them looked really cool, and it's a shame they weren't added, but even still, 32 seems like a little too many.

I feel like Agents of Mayhem should've been a multiplayer experience. It has the DNA of a hero shooter ala Overwatch
AoM has an identity crisis in every way except visually. The devs got mostly halfway into development before saying "...wait, what are we making, again?"

Technically the McFlurry machine is just a motor that spins a spoon around, in order to swirl the mix ins through the ice cream (which I suspect they often don't bother doing). I don't think anyone needs a rapidly spinning plastic spoon in their large intestine.
(Yes, I realise he means the actual ice cream machine but still...)
This is gonna sound absolutely mad, but when I was at uni doing Creative Writing, someone submitted a story that involved the various lecturers on the course being murdered in very meta-y ways that encompassed them as a person, and it's been about 10-11 years since I first heard that story but the way you sound in my head when you say 'I don't think anyone needs a rapidly spinning plastic spoon in their large intestine' made me think of that utterly barmy and hilarious memory. I worked at McDonalds when they first got the flurry machines (yes I'm old thank you) and we were taught how to attach the spoon to the motor to get a proper swirl. Roll on OH GOD, OVER 20 YEARS and they just dump the mix in, jam a spoon in and hand it over- no mixing whatsoever :D

@@ACWells13 My original comment caused more than a little reflection and existential dread on my part as well, based on how long it has been. I too was working for them when McFlurries were first introduced. The machines could be annoying to use during busy periods and if the ice cream was harder than usual would potentially result in a bent or broken spoon. So while I believe stores still have them installed, I think you are correct that they just dump the stuff in and call it a day.

I'm still a bit bitter over Doom Eternal scrapping invasion. I don't really follow games during development, so I had no idea invasion was "delayed" until after launch (then cancelled). Imagine my surprise when I bought my friends and myself copies of Doom Eternal so that we play invasion together...

The invasion mode for Doom makes me think of Perfect Darks Counter Ops mode, where one player was doing a regular ol campaign mission while another player was one of the bad guys reasonably close to that player.
I still really wish this could come back more. Invasions in Dark Souls are a great modern comparison but what I feel really sets it apart is you don't choose your own weapons, so the main character doing the mission isn't looking for a glowing red YOU, it's a regular bad guy who is a surprisingly good aim
I thought I knew everything about Portal 2, but now I can tell I still have a lot to learn.
I'm waiting for the multi-player edition of OxTra where one of us controls the 'Luke' character and another controls his boss, 'Ellen'. Here's hoping we get it one day....

On the other hand, there are the multiplayer modes in some games which felt so needlessly pointless, that you wonder why they were included at all. Crash Bandicoot 4 is the most recent example I can think of in that regard

One multiplayer mode I wish had become reality is multiplayer for Mass Effect 3 for ME Legendary Edition. I sunk HOURS into the multiplayer with my friends, maxed out so many weapons and characters. I honestly miss it a lot. I really with it was added to the Legendary Edition, I still hold hope for a patch to one day be released adding it to the game.
Me too! I would've purchased it in a heartbeat. The Andromeda version just did not live up to its predecessor so I was bummed when they announced that the ME legendary edition wouldn't have multiplayer

Burning Rangers on the Saturn was going to have a multiplayer mode. Like so many games back in its day, there were plenty of rumours for how to unlock it, but sadly none of them worked.
It's a real shame nothing has been done with the IP since, not counting PSO.

Related to Dragon Age: Origins multiplayer: there's a setting for enabling multiplayer in KOTOR II's client settings INI file. No idea what it does, though.
Also, Ellen: Don't forget: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was supposed to be an MMO at one point, too...would have loved to see that.
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood would have been a _Perfect Game_ to make split screen, nearly the entire game has both brothers in each level (you get to choose which one you play as) and it would have been so friggin dynamic.
Split screen was my childhood.
Alternating words? You should do that live as a Games Review Cheddar Gorge. Followed, of course, by a quick game of Mornington Crescent in Invasion Mode (you need the "appliance" add-on and all vertical escalators are in nid).
I honestly hate multiplayer modes I play games that have amazing single-player stories with worlds I can get lost in. Worlds where you don't need to capture any flag or objective just you and your character a tale to get lost in and when your finished move on to the next one.

Doom's Invasion mode sounds like the Versus mode from the Left 4 Dead games. Playing Left 4 Dead's versus mode in Doom is something that needs to happen

Tbh I'm glad these games didn't get multiplayer modes. They're single player experiences, why throw multiplayer into the mix? So many games have them and I don't touch them, even if they have achievements attached. Looking at you Assassin's Creed and Tomb Raider.

Mario Sunshine is one of those games thats been absolutely stripped down in terms of coding, another interesting scrapped feature that was referenced in the code was a train station so seems early on the weird paint portals weren't a thing.

Play Portal, they are well regarded games for a reason.

I guess I'm a grumpy single player person, because with 3 of my favorite games (Portal 2, BioShock Infinite, and Dark Souls 3) being on this list I'm a bit relieved. I mean, Dark Souls 3 already has the online bits that I avoid by playing offline anyway. I know, I know it's optional and requires active participation on the part of the player, but it also requires a PS+ account, which I have no need for. I know Bioware has gotten roped into doing multiplayer modes in addition to single player modes on their games before. I can't remember which, but I know Yahtzee mentioned it on a ZP episode about one of their games where the single player part was okay if a bit short and the multiplayer was absolutely awful.
The Dark Souls 3 Moonlit Ceremony mode makes it look a lot like Bloodborne, which is not at all a bad thing.
Ellen's Cyberpunk 2077 stream is still one of the funniest things. I love the excitement over petting the cat, and I love her reaction when she turned on the mirror, and also when she was in the menu and had to pick out different clothes for her character because of the breast clipping.
You definitely don't want to rush, with Alistair. Especially since fifth base is "he is forced to sleep with a woman he loathes or you die."
