  • This is the first start of my 2110cc engine that I built from scratch for my '57 oval rag top bug. It couldn't have gone any better, and sounds awesome! Here are the engine specs:
    150 HP
    82mm forged chromoly counter weighted and balanced crank
    5.4" forged chromoly I-beam rods
    straight cut cam gears
    Eagle street race cam
    Mahle big bore pistons, 90.5mm
    CNC wedge ported heads, 42mm x 37.5mm stainless valves
    dual Weber 44mm IDF carbs, with velocity stacks and jetted for 5000 ft. elevation
    match ported big beef manifolds
    Ceramic 1 5/8" A1 sidewinder header exhaust system, with heater boxes
    lightened flywheel, 12 lbs.
    stage 1 Kennedy pressure plate, with dual friction clutch
    Magnaspark II electronic ignition distributor, 8.2 mm spark plug wires
    full flow oiling system with external oil filter and sump, 6 qt. oil (stock is 2.75 qt)
    9:1 compression
    all engine tin installed, working thermostat even!
    light weight lifters
    welded and balanced fan
    Gene Berg breather
    Bernie Bergmann linkage
    Normally one would have to remove the spark plugs and crank, crank, crank to build up oil pressure before starting. I used an external oil pump to prime the oil system, so I had instant oil pressure :)

    I had a 69 back in the 80s and then another 69 in the 90s. I really miss those cars. Love working on them and fixing them up. Love their sound too. So much fun to drive.

    Eye candy. Add som NOS and gas nozzles , and it will be a wild cat. 😎 I had a long time ago a 68 mod with nearly same engine, with Nos system, i still miss this car. Nos button in the gear knob. 75 extra Hp in a second.

    I'd so love to find an oval to lavish my love and savings onto, and build the most killer 2332 for! even though EFI makes more power, there's nothing like the sound of a pair opf 48mm webers working hard on top of a high revving air cooled

    Love it. Just after putting my 1641 back in and going through the same process, she is all dialled in now and purring away. However i have done an oilchange and found a bit of metal in the tub. So i changed it once more and now i will have to drive her for about 1200km, as i am moving and the bug is the first to move. So i am hoping it was residual stuff and a little bit of material from breaking in and its fine. But i will release the oil on arrival and investigate...hope you have better luck, its a sweet car.

You obviously have built/worked on load engines in the past. It really suck to not be able to hear and have a pounding head ache at the end of day :) Love to see your '57 oval when it turns a wheel on the street. Thanks for posting!!!

Have to get up early :(. Impressed my friend! I'm a mechanical guy and do all my own Chevy truck work, and love pro audio, but I know nothing about vw! Always wanted to know how the old vw engines worked. Still don't understand the engine cooling and the cabin heater! Cool. Love it.

    I once drove a 72 super beetle through the Mojave desert in 120 degree heat driving 60+ mph. When I arrived in Hunington beach California I checked my oil and to my surprise I had no oil in the engine. I walked a few blocks and bought 4 quarts of oil and put it in and I really thought my engine was done for but I never noticed any damage what so ever.
    Could a expert explain to me why my motor did not burn out while driving with no oil?

    • @theepremiere891

    Wow.....very nice. I have a 71 super Beatle ..... My first car..... It's up on block's for 30 yrs. about how much would it cost to build a motor like this?

    • @concernedpatriot3618
      @concernedpatriot3618 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      timothy svec at least $5,000 on the motor build! Unless you can do it all yourself it would save you some on labor just price the parts all the parts required to build the motor that would be your hard costs! Remember to add oil spark plugs and spark plug wires those cost money also

    Good morning Willie ... This is a long shot ...but ...do you still have this bug and can you comment on the engine's performance over time ... This is one of the smoothest running home built engines I've heard in awhile ...Did you build it from a kit or sourced your own parts combos ??? Are your heater boxes stock?? Why the Bernie Bergman linkage??? It looks like the Gene Berg linkage, are they the same??

    Wow impressive HP! Not a car guy so could you tell me if this engine is still air cooled, any ECU system, and what estimated gas mileage is? Just curious if this kind of engine could have been made in the past instead of the typical dinky 40-60hp engines the original bugs had, or if you have some modern engineering that would have made that impossible for the time.

    I was under the impression that when running in an engine its best to vary the engine speed. Did something change?

    • @Bandit-10-4
      @Bandit-10-4 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you're under a slight misunderstanding when you initially start an engine the first 20 minutes it's crucial to maintain a steady rev of about 2000 to bed the cam and the lifters in after that when driving for the first couple of thousand miles it's a bad idea to sit on 1 RPM you should vary your rev range to bed the Rings and crank in at varying rep Ranges and lobes so there you go

    Do they make self-adjusting valves for air cooled VolksWagens? I t seems like a hassle to me if every time you do a tune up you have to adjust the valves.

    • @jeronchatman1519
      @jeronchatman1519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't want self adjusters on a V-Dub. Solid lifters equal more power. After a few times you get the hang of adjusting them. A labor of love!
