      mmig2116 agree, very good vid quality, audio and more importantly instructional info that is actually helpful and useful, it would be great to see you get some bikes to compare, I feel your opinion would be real world and honest! Even if you were able to do some reviews on your ride groups bikes! Esp the TE vs EXC I see in your group! Bike comparisons would definitely increase your subs and exposure, you definitely deserve it, cheers mate, look forward to more adventures from you guys in Japan, cheers 🤙

    Really good video. And dents in the expansion chamber is the reason I have not switched to a 2-stroke. I tend to ride things that exceed my riding skills. :D

    Thanks for the video, I am going to fabricate this same tool, I've seen guys just use hose clamps and maybe safety wire holding 1 rubber cap on one end and a piece of steele blocking the other end... also seen them blow out.. would kill if the ends blew. Great videos..cheers

    I've used a powerwasher to pop out multiple dents at the same time. Works very good. Plus it doesn't ruin the plated finish.

      Yes, there are multiple ways to do this. All methods have pros and cons. The advantage of heat + air is you can be very selective in what area you target and distortion of the pipe shape is minimized. But to be able to repair more severely damaged pipes I have ordered a hydraulic pump + bung blow out kit. When it has arrived and I have a suitable pipe to repair I'll make a video about it...

    Good to know you can use 60+ psi. Every other video I've seen used 20-25 psi.

    That is the method I use except I can never get it hot enough with map gas alone. I bought a cheap regulator that uses the map gas tank threads and the small oxygen tanks of the same size. Adding the oxygen allows me to get it hot enough, and fast enough to where it's much easier to manipulate the dent. Although sometimes it can get hot too fast and then the dent is no longer a dent but a slight bubble instead. It's a balancing act with the amount of pressure and heat to use. Problem with the small oxygen tanks is you have to work fast as they run out in about ten minutes of use. Great video man. I'm still scratching my head about how that hydro force unit in your other video works. I'm just not sold on that method.

    I use oxy acet and up to 100psi , you would have had that perfect with a bit more pressure , still , a good result.

    U can drill a small hole on the other side under neigh the pipe and take a small punch and ever so softly remove the rest of dent then spot weld the hole u made

    Great vid! If you set your compressor to fill to only 60psi you don't need to have the secondary gauge. The pipe and tank will equalize.

    i have a decent size dent on the very bottom of my pipe on the header side and i'm not really worried about the way it looks, more exhaust flow restriction (kx100 btw)

    One more question. Would it be possible to fix the dents with an electric heat gun (2000W, 600 degrees Celsius)? I don't have access to a torch such as the one you have on your video. But I could buy a heat gun.

      No, unfortunately a heat gun would not be able to get the pipe hot enough.

    Bump air pressure to 80-90 and get it cherry hot it’ll come out a lot more than you would think

    When blowing out pipes I have had good luck using a metal body working hammer to work the edges of the dent. While the pipe is pressurized and hot work the edges of the dent tapping along the high spots which relaxes the metal and allows the dent to come out further.

      Yes, I do the same now. Hammering works well. Usually I use compressed water (HydraForce) rather than air as it's much quicker and safer.

    with a finer tip to concentrate the heat and another 10 to 20 psi you could get 100% of that dent out.

    Hi mate! I suggest getting a tyre gaige that is always connected to the valve. This way not only you can inflate the pipe quicker but most importantly to control the pressure inside. I have gone as far as 90 psi and it held.
    Even better advice isto to wear a face shield, gauntlets and grab hold of the pipe's brackets to a vice so it doesn't go anywhere should by any means the pipe decides to se the dark side of the moon... : )

      Good advice. I've already made a a new line hose which so I can have pressure gauge connected all the time and make adjustments while working on the pipe. This is much easier to use than the air setup I showed in the video.

      Hi Matt, just another word of advice for anyone doing this like I did to a friend's KTM EXC Erzberg just a few days ago but it's applicable to any 2T. The pipe (oem by the way) will be really nice and neat after this, almost looking like new. The only thing is that heat can get it out of shape. What I mean by this is that it would be extremely hard to align the exhaust inlet with all the support brackets.
      My suggestion is for people to get a model (wood or metal) of the brackets positions on the frame when the bike is new (or when you check it is decently aligned if bought used), install the pipe using that (better if fixed to a vice) and proceed as explained in the video.
      This jig can be done using the exhaust pipe itself. All it takes is some expertise and sturdy materials so it does distort in time.

    Do I need a compressor? I don’t have one. What if I used a bike foot pump to get the PSI to 60+. Do you think that would work?

      noahr- Yes, you could use a foot pump. It should work fine so long as you can pump up the pressure high enough (about 70psi).

      Lucky 366 - I repaired my carbon guard using some epoxy resin. I masked off the repair area and applied the epoxy resin into the cracked part. Let it set for 24H then sanded down and clear coated it. I don't use a patch as it seemed to be OK without and the damage wasn't in an area you'd often hit.

      Psych Olocke - Yes, some people use a pressure washer and bungs. However, it’s not as controllable and can result in deforming, or splitting the pipe.

    Another way to dobit is fill it with water and seal the ends and freeze it. We did i with a crushed car exhaust header and it worked amazing. Could barley see the mark after

      Jeffrey SmokeyBones O'Malley - I've heard about the freezing water method. I'm sure it works well for certain types of damage. My main concern would be that it's not controllable in the same way as applying heat to the damaged area only. I'd be worried that the pipe gets deformed. There's also a possibility that it could split. Overall I think the most controllable method is blow using compressed air and heat.

      Yea I agree. as the ice expands it could take out some of the bends in the pipe and make it not fit properly

      Yea I tried the ice method years ago. But it split the seam. Had to weld it back together. I think the heat method is better as is more controlled just keep an eye on pressure as you kept heating it. Pretty sure the pressure will increase with a lot of heat. Bends of pipe stayed the same, with the ice method. But the weakest part of the pipe the expansion chamber split at the seam weld. Factory pipe.

      DangerJoker ! - Freezing the pipe with sealed water inside isn’t very controllable. The pipe can easily distort, or split.

    What would be the procedure for mutiple dent removel? would it be one dent at a time. What I mean is first tackle one dent. Wait to cool. Release the air. Then start all over with the next dent? or could you tackel mutiple dents. That is heat all dents at the same time. Then pressurize the pipe?

      Erdat Çataloğlu - For multiple dents I just continue. If the dents are close it’s quicker because the pipe is already hot.

      No, you'll need to add some pressure, or it won't blow out.

    I use a standard air snap fitting with a pressure gauge behind it instead of a tyre valve. I set the regulator on compresser to 40psi, and it holds a constant 40. if it starts to rise past 40 on the gauge, I shut down and GTFO.

      Oliver Keeley - It doesn’t remove the finish, but it does discolor it a little. Using some Scotchbrite and WD40, or some metal polish restores the finish, although it won’t look like new.

      It defiantly does damage the finish. That area of the pipe will be burnt and will rust easily. BUT. If you keep it clean and polish with oil it will last a long time.

    When it hit the rock, it does not just get dented, but at the same time its angle is getting shift, so how we can fix it?

      Atilla Özkolaçık - if the shape has distorted you’ll need to try to bend it back. Try clamping the pipe to a bench and use a pipe to bend the header. It’s usually possible to fix it so the pipe fits, but difficult to get it perfect.

      Atilla Özkolaçık - I think hydraulic blow out looks quick and easy, but there is a risk that the pipe shape distorts while you blow it out. The FMF pipes have a factory made dent at the top of the pipe (for clearance under the radiator) and this would be blown out too with hydraulic. Like any method there are pros and cons...

    I stick 20 psi in pipe and the heat it. Feal am just wasting gas as when air goes in it just cool"s the pipe again

    Kinda sketchy with an empty chamber. I worked with a guy who leak tested a water tank with straight air, tank ruptured and blew him in to pieces, that was at 90psi, 250 gal bomb.
    Filling the pipe with water would be 100% safer (hydroforming). Can still split, but splitting is far better than a 60psi air bomb.

    Your main seam looks pretty good but those depression areas on both sides can be completely removed if you use an oxy/acetylene torch with a small welding/brazing tip. The heat is obviously greater and concentrated in a smaller area so you need to be a little more careful but you can produce a nearly perfect result fairly easily. Also, that pipe you're working on is thick enough to where you can throw some pretty good heat at it.

      Yes, if I had oxy acetylene I'd use that instead of MAP gas as it would be much faster. However, good results can still be achieved using MAP gas. One detail I prefer (particularly for anyone who doesn't have much experience with this process)it to add compressed air after putting some heat into the pipe, rather than at the start when the pipe is cold. This way you have a lot better idea of the maximum air pressure.

      Eric Broome - The higher the pressure the higher the risk. Next time I might try a slightly higher pressure of 75psi, but I probably won't go above that as the heat you apply also increases the pressure.

      Eric B Even 60psi is overkill. I’ve been doing this for years on all types of pipes and 40 psi is plenty only time i’ve even gone higher is on gnarly pipes that are very thick. This dent could have been removed to look factory, not enough heat was used in the correct places which is why he had poor results.

    As a milwright/welder i would say nay to this method only because heating it up to the point where air will bend in back out WOULD ruin the structural integrity of the metal. I like the water method better.. just my professional oppion on metalurgy.

      Some people do that, although I've never tried. A read that a major issue seems to be that it's easy to split the pipe doing this. Another issue is that the pipe can easily become distorted.

    Not a fan of compressed air, use pressurized water from a pressure washer. Hydroforming. No dangerous hazard if the metal gives way. No heat needed.

    Good idea but that’s like putting a blow torch on a compressor there’s a chance that it might blow up. Just think of a spray paint can it says not to heat it up or it might blow up good thinking tho ;)

      Joshua Dingledine - The technique shown in the video is a common method used to repair 2-stroke pipe damage. I’ve never heard of of pipe exploding. Adding compressed air after the pipe is hot is key to avoiding dangerously high air pressure. But there is some risk so wearing appropriate safety gear (gloves and eye/face protection) is important.

    I really feel like carbon is not a good material for that type of use. It looks great but once its cracked or chipped it falls apart. I will never run another carbon exhaust on anything.

      I agree. It's rigid but definitely not impact resistant. If anything other than alloy is used, it should be hdpe

      The dent would come out easier with higher pressure, but it would also be a lot more dangerous if something went wrong. Recently I prefer using the high pressure water blow out method as it's a lot safer and quick and easy to perform.

    Compressed air is dangerous! How about filling a part of the space with sand or other non flammable material and only leaving a smaller air pocket at the dent site?
    Steam boilers are tested with fluid because you can't compress it and if it ruptures it's just that, no blow up.

      @@66AGW - The strength of steel actually increases with temperature reaching a peak at about 220 degC. You'd need to heat it to greater than 350degC for the strength to be the same as room temp. With the HydraForce, as the pipe is filled with water it would be very difficult (and dangerous) to get the pipe hot enough (greater than 350degC) to make the steel softer.

      It's tricky to repair bent rims at home and if the damage is gross you're better off replacing the rim. For minor dents and riding off-road I would continue riding with it and keep my eye on it.

    This seems a bit dangerous to me, any un-burnt fuel or carbon in the pipe, mixed with oxygen and heat and boom.

      You could use a stronger guard, but they will tend to make the pipe bend instead of denting. The combined skid plate/pipe guards offer the best protection, but are somewhat heavy, expensive, difficult to install/take off and collect large amounts of mud/debris while riding. I went a different direction and have been using an FMF Gnarly pipe with no guard for about 6 months now. The Gnarly uses thicker gauge steel than stock and has proven to be strong and dent resistant (only a couple of very minor dings).

      I tend to agree. Carbon guards do provide some protection, but also put more force on the header of the pipe and it'll be more likely the pipe bends rather than denting. As such I don't use a guard anymore and just repair the pipe dents when they get bad.

    Hydofoming uses 1000's of psi, 60 psi on that small volume with air is like a bike tyre, go on crank it up.😆

      With the application of heat you don't need high pressure to pop out dent's. This way you can minimize the danger of an explosion. I now have an air inflator/gauge which can stay attached to the valve so I can constantly monitor the pressure.

      Brendyn Wagner - I could do. But like anything there are pros and cons. A cage protects the pipe well, but adds weight and collects mud. I’m not a habitual pipe crusher, so am happy running an FMF Gnarly and no guard right now.

    I'll never understand why all these fix it videos have all these shop tools then use a map gas torch, why dont people use a oxy acetylene torch anywhere on TH-cam?

      I personally don't own oxy acetylene and rarely have a need for a high heat source. For cutting I use a plasma torch. Map gas is a good compromise for me for jobs like this...

      Cody Crowell I feel like if a person has a nice shop full of tools they should have a torch setup. Why have 10 grand in tools on the walls and not have a 500 torch set...... I'm a firm believer in the old adage that "time is money" spend a little more money, save a bunch of time, therefore save money.

      Sorry you didn't like the video. In my instructional videos I try to strike a balance between providing enough instruction, while keeping it concise and to the point. Over the years I hope I've improved with regard to this as I do think it's very important not to waffle.
