By 1960 Gibson was mainly using Alnico 5 magnets in their PAFs, which would probably explain those guitars sounding a bit hotter. 58s were mainly Alnico 2 and 59s were mainly Alnico 4.

It depends of the single guitar, and it depends how it lived and aged during these 60 years. Check for Kossoff’s ‘59 (not the striped one), that guitar isn’t ‘hot’, it has the devil inside! But it’s correct for sure that ‘58s, for what you can listen and for what it’s been said by people that have listened and played many of them, tend to be ‘darker’.

    • @maxwellfan55
      @maxwellfan55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@toivonencresto I never met Kossoff, but me and my band (we were 17-18yrs) were invited to bass player Andy Fraser house for a chat and a bit of music as he lived nearby in Surrey. That was around 1972-3 I'm guessing.

@astraplaaneta4656, Yes pretty much. according to Dave Stephens of "Stephens design pickups" who has been inside hundreds of old PAF's to replicate them said that Gibson very rarely ever used A5 until the 60's and before that A2 was the primary magnet they used by a large margin. of course there were some with A4 but overall the most used magnet in them was the A2.

Well it had gold top hat knobs not reflectors so it was either a early 60 or mid year 60. Once gibson changed the dye in the finish to not fade they also started using reflector control knobs. Yes the knobs could have been swapped out by Clapton or someone else so that is a possibility. My best guest is a mid 60's LP standard With what is known as the version 2 neck shape. Gibson offers these on modern 60's reissues. V1 is a standard 59 profile , V2 is thinner and V3 is what is known as the blade neck profile. It is the modern slim taper.

I think Clapton has the guitar and is having so much fun listening to us all talk about it, and doesnt want to spoil the fun by telling us the truth; besides, look at the value of it rising. I think once Clapton passes on, the Beano guitar will be found and will be a nice addition to to Claptons legacy.

Clapton said a long time ago that he had another nice Les Paul and it's just to play; he's totally switched to Strats and just isn't in the market for one; he has no need for one and isn't looking for one(and likely hasn't thought about it for years).

I wonder how many people in the UK have tried to find the serial number through the record keeping of Selmer Music? Given that Selmer was one of the few dealers of Gibson I would think that all Gibson serial numbers were well documented. Even though Selmer has been out of business for many years it's possible that their records are still floating around somewhere. As for Beano, I think it must be found before EC passes on because he's probably the only person who can authenticate it given no serial number is known.

There's just one little detail in all of this that's glaringly obvious by its omission. It's the elephant in the living room.
If this thing does turn up, and it gets verified as genuine, what happens next? Does Clapton get it back? Does he have any legal claim to it? Is he going to have to buy it back from it's present owner at current value? Is Clapton even going to care after all this time? Is he going to say "Oh Hell I want me bloody Les Paul back!" This will be an interesting shit storm to watch if it does turn up while Mr. Clapton is still with us. This could go any one of a hundred different ways.
Personally, I'd love to see it resurface, and EC get it back, and then play some gigs with it and perhaps make another album and play it on all of the tracks.
.........that would be a happy ending.

I recall a quote from Peter Green where he said he didn't think his Green/Moore burst was as nice as Clapton's Beano burst because his had a very large neck compared to Eric's LP. I believe Clapton has stated the Beano burst had a smaller neck as well. Unfortunately, I can't point to where I heard or read these statements. Jo Bonamassa says that Erics LP (Beano) is in fact a 59, not a 60, he has extremely solid info that it is in a Billionaire specialist guitar collection. that resides on the East Coast of the US. I think the Beano Burst was a 59 not a 60. The red in the picture doesn’t prove or disprove anything since it was only 5 or 6 years old at the time. All 58’s and 59’s still had their red after 5 or 6 years. Look at videos of Page, Allman etc playing in the 70’s and their 59’s still had the red. It has 59 knobs which I’m not sure why you’d switch out knobs it seems like a menial change to make. The basis of why we all assume it’s a 60 is Clapton’s recollection that it had a thin neck. But let’s look at what necks Clapton played. The Fool was a 63 or 64 which was the year Gibson went back to a baseball bat neck. Then Clapton went to the 10/56 deep V fender neck for brownie and blackie. Clapton obviously liked big necks. So we’re basing this being a 60 off somebody’s recollection of a thin neck but we can see from his other guitar choices that they all had big necks. And let’s not forget the ES the king of the baseball bat necks. I can tell you that the difference between a 60 LP neck and a 63 SG is huge. That would be a massive change in what somebody’s preference would be. However, if you went from a 59 LP neck to a 63SG you’d probably look back and say yeah the Les Paul had a thinner neck. I believe it was a 59 not a 60. I don’t think what color it was in a photo when it was only 5-6 years old proves anything, nor does does Claptons recollection that it was thin because that is relative. I base it on two things, first going from a 60LP neck to a 63SG or an ES neck is not a likely progression. What is more likely is going from a 59 neck to the 63SG and ES and then still thinking yeah that Les Paul had a thinner neck (which it would do). The other thing I base it on might be pretty stupid but it’s the knobs. Why the hell would somebody change out knobs. Newer was better then, they had reflective material on it which was in then (dragoncaster pickguard etc). They may have fallen off or maybe he just didn’t like them but the neck progression is not logical to me

Also, two more things to suggest it’s a 59. In 66 The Butterfield Blues band played at Leeds and Mike Bloomfield noted that he and Clapton were both playing “1959 Les Paul Cherry Red Sunbursts”. He specifically said 1959. Maybe he didn’t know any better (although he obviously knew the year of his guitar) which doesn’t prove Claptons was a 59 but it does prove that Bloomfield definitely knew what year his was so he knew more about them than Clapton obviously did since he doesn’t know. My point is Bloomfield said the year he didn’t just say Les Paul Bursts. The other thing is a few years back (and this went largely unchecked) Joe Bonamassa came out and said he’s seen the Beano Burst and it’s in a private collection and it’s a 59). He later recanted this and we for some reason make pretend it never happened. I don’t actually think Joe Bonamassa is full of shit. He’s seen enough Bursts and rolls in those circles enough to know what he’s looking at. For Christ sake he owns half the known bursts available today. My bet is Joe Bonamassa did see the burst, Clapton knows where the burst is or who has it and it’s in a private collection. How it was obtained, how he it could legally get it back if he even wanted to pursue that, is it still legally his, did this collector duke him a bunch of money to shut up who knows. But my bet is Bonamassa had a Freudian slip, quickly recanted and we all pretend it was never said. And go in believing it was a 60 because a man who was abusing substances at the time recalls it had a thin neck lol. A man who outside of a Norcaster played the laundry list of the hugest necks in history immediately after the burst. Everything except Claptons hazy recollection points to it being a 59 and not a 60

A lot of these 'burst stories have grown arms and legs over the years. Such stories, in themselves, have probably just added to the mystique and value of them as guitars. Everyone loves to tell an I-know-something-that-you-don't-know story. Joe Bonamassa seems to be as susceptible to a good dit as everybody else. I would not lend any more credence to his take, purely on the basis that he is an avid collector and celeb musician worth multi-millions, than I would to a bloke in the saloon bar of my local pub.

I'm the same age as Bob, also a guitar nut.
I wasn't in London during the 60's but was there during most of the 70's. Just about all the fabulous London West End musical instrument shops mentioned here were well stocked and doing good business at this time, and fantastic to visit. Selmer's being the most notable, new and used gear, pedals, drums, woodwind the lot. Also many other stores spread around the suburbs within easy reach.
Supplemented by this, I would also like to add the 70's London pub/club music scene was incredibly vibrant, hosted incredibly talented musicians, generally free to walk in and not reflective at all of what was happening in the charts if you appreciated watching great guitarists. For this you were charged a little more on your pints, but being Friday/Saturday and just got paid, it didn't matter. For the rest of the week you hunted out the the other gigs, starved, leaving just enough for the bus rides to work till the following weekend.

And make no mistake, EC must know it too and isn't interested unless the owner comes forward and makes an offer that will go to his Crossroads Center.

Has anyone compared the Beano album sound to the live Bluesbreakers tone? It’s very different. Obviously a lot of factors are involved that can change sound, but nevertheless, it’s an interesting comparison, particularly the Stormy Monday tone which is so rich and creamy with far less of a grainy sound than you would expect.

I own a 1960 Les Paul Classic re-issue with what I call an aged Cherry Burst,.... tomato burst, (?) Never heard it called that here in the States ? The only reason I got it was for the thin neck, & it's gorgeous on top of that. Being a Fender man especially a Tele man, all the Gibson L. Paul's necks other than the 1960 were just too fat for me. I'll never part with mine, even the re-issue's in Burst are rare now.

From what we know on the LPF Gil Southworth says that Beano's a '59. He claims to have it on good authority that it's 9 XXXX care of one of his guitar illuminati acquaintances, that's the latest as of about 3 years ago or so.

So sad that people (not you) know where and... WHAT is ('58/'59/'60)... and we can just speculate about that. For Sure Beano will rise, the sad thing is I think it'll be only when Eric had already passed away. This Said, I don't think Paul's Burst (it's a '60, 0 1182 if I recall correctly) could be worth more than Beano, or Page's N.1. For Sure is a "rarer" instrument, but not so important in the history of music and Paul had it only in mid '80s (if I'm correct, again). Clapton changed music with his Crank'd Bluesbreaker + 'Burst. This said, if Bonamassa said Beano it's a '59... it's a '59 for sure ;)

Do you both ascribe value and importance to the Beano by dint of it's disappearance? Granted, Beano was an important album. I mean I think he owned it for less than a year? And a 60 is not as storied as a 58 or 59. Page's 1 and 2 seem more important to me. Or Peter Greene's. Clapton's renown isn't what it was too in some circles.
