A stolen guitar, a stolen anything, remains the property of the owner it was stolen from. Buying a stolen guitar doesn’t make you the owner. When someone rebuys something it’s a combination of goodness of their heart and a PR consideration. When someone like Bonamassa finds out a guitar is stolen and returns it to the rightful owner that’s his legal responsibility. When you do pawnshop purchases (I do this sometimes) you have to be prepared for losing the money if its a stolen instrument. Life’s like that.
Different laws in different countries. The laws we have here in the US are not the same in the UK. The guitar was stolen in the UK. I agree with the thoughts, guitar thieves are scoundrels and I would want my guitar back. Be legal claims that it is your forever, no questions asked, is not true. Look up the story on Craig Chquico's Les Paul. It is very convoluted and in the end... the lawyers were the only winners in the whole affair.

It is here, in a private burst collection on the outskirts of Boston. Very well known collector, I’ve sold him 50’s parts in the past. I haven’t seen the guitar in person however. The only burst I’ve held and played was J Giels 59

Apparently the neck has been warped since Jamerson was using it on records. That's part of the lore of how great he was. Apparently the action was super high, the strings dead, and the neck was warped but he still forever changed the pocket of music with his incredible counter melodies and syncopation. Supposedly an old Ampeg flip top was part of the equation but I've heard era correct Fender basses through those amps...that man had magic in his fingers.
Obviously, the East Coast collector JoBo seems to imply might be Dirk Ziff who has 300 odd bursts he is on the East Coast as one the real wealthy Aluminati think JoBo's Lawyers probably advised him to stop right there say nothing more. I imagine Dirk Ziff bought it unknowingly as nobody was doing the forensic analysis that is done on stuff like burst patterns etc. Either that or it's locked in a Vault by some private investor in Japan. Seemingly Ed Kings Red eye was stolen at gun point then some years later it ended up in Dirks collection. so the guy is not super fussy on provenance or when you are scooping up that many it matters far less.
It might be a bit unfair to call Dirk out on this but East Coast collector his name popped straight in my head and as far as I know, JB has dodged the question ever since, not sure he just said it for PR purposes as he is an as serious collector of this stuff as it gets. Seemingly it took some work for to get Ed Kings guitar back. All that said I don't really think at this point Clapton is that bothered he might knock out a few tunes on it if he put it up for auction but I genuinely think he has moved on a long time ago. For all that the guitar community would like to see them reunited one more time. Me personally I much prefer Clapton playing a guitar with Humbuckers despite the fact he likes Strats more. I watched some footage a while back of him playing live with a 335/345 and that sound suits his blues mode far better than his boosted fattened up Strat. just my preference.
Dirk is a dirtbag billionaire, he has dealt in stolen gear before and simply doesn’t care, he has money and he knows the cops are not coming to his home in Florida to collect a guitar or two. This guy is a trust fund hack. His dad built a media empire which he sold because his brat children told him they didn’t want to continue the family business. “Just give us the f’n money”, is a direct quote from a close family worker whom overheard the sons yelling at their dad. 200 59 bursts unnacounted for.. doesn't necessarily mean they're lying around anywhere.. they weren't always valuable and there was a big phase of bands smashing up instruments.
I have this unsettling feeling that if it ever turned up, it would by common consent be found to be a dog. Eric was Eric, he’s been better placed than anyone else to identify and then play a Les Paul as good or better than his first one. He clearly just moved on. I love guitar, but this is becoming like a Cargo Cult.
I think you’re right. Guys like Clapton and Gilmour played guitar on some famous music, but to them it’s probably just “ a guitar I played”. I read an interview with Jimmy Page and he barely remembers what he played on famous songs and most of them were borrowed or stuff laying around the studio. These guys could go into a music store, take a guitar off the wall and noodle around, and it would automatically be worth double.
I'm more interested in knowing where the *amplifiers* used on iconic recordings ended up. I'd rather play my 335 through the beano Marshall over the beano burst through my amp. Other amps I'd *love* to play through: -Anything from Zep 1 -David Gilmour's Hiwatt -The champ from Layla -Mick Ronson's Marshall Major -Iommi's Laney -Whatever Jeff Beck used on BBB and Wired -The amp Ron Wood used on Stay With Me (think it was an Ampeg, I have owned multiple from that era.)
Then there's James Jamerson's Precision Bass "Funk Machine", another musically and historically significant instrument that was stolen and never recovered.
With Joe Bonamassa sitting on the info about Beano,it's kind of a shame.Nobody gets to see it,play it,or record with it.The guy who owns it can't even brag about it publicly . Aside from the fact ,it would be great to hear Clapton record with it again.
They kinda kept it on the down low that they had it and when Irv let me play it I got a picture with it. he told me not to post it online at the time but, since the closing I’ve obviously posted it online. 😂

I know exactly where the Beano guitar is not, in my collection! LOL 8) A few years ago my local vintage shop acquired a 1954 LesPaul from a gentleman's estate in Buffalo NY. ( I'm between KBUF and KROC) It was in almost unplayed condition, and included 2 cases,, original chipboard and fine leather bag that was mint! It was a gold top. Also included a catalog, the original receipt, strap, and all other documentation. They had it for sale for $36k That was just too much for me at the time. After 6 months they had a sale, and reduced it to $28k. While I was trying to sell my pickup truck to buy it, it was sold. I had mixed emotions about that, but I still have my pickup and I'm happy about that anyway. (it was worth much more). A friend of mine also has a '64 Strat, and '64 black face deluxe. Original owner of both. I've been working on him for years. 8) I only wish I had everything I've bought and sold since 1968. 8-| LOL --gary
To add to the Frampton story, and I heard this from the man himself during his premier guitar rig rundown, he asked the gentleman who loaned him the guitar if he would consider selling it. He said that he wouldn't but that he would give it to him! How fucking cool is that?
Besides all the great stories of the artist and guitars the other story worth exploring is implied in the "Go Your Own Way" sitting on the pool table learning Frampton Comes Alive album - right there, that sets you apart from the crowd. Follow the crowd or go your own way is the pressure for each generation. My go your own way musical moment came in Grade 8, our teacher wanted students to select a musical composition for studying lyrics as poetry and story. He encouraged us to bring in the albums we listen to at home and we'd listen in class. Only two students brought in Albums, me and someone else. The class favorite by at least 99% was the other person's album Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. The teacher let me play my selection which was Elderberry Wine by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. I was way outside the box of being cool to the class and I took a lot of mockery because of it. I discovered the song on the" Don't Shoot Me I am only the Piano Player" album and rhythmically and musically the song had a story to tell. Looking back perhaps I was the cool kid for not following the crowd. I am sure looking back spending time studying Frampton was time well spent and you didn't really miss anything for not following the crowd.
I have an unusual guitar. It was built by my brother when he worked at Fender, it is a Coronado Wildwood with Stratocaster neck. It is around 1964 vintage and has had locking tuners and an E335 Tailpiece installed since its creation. It is very beautiful with and figured with streaks of blue and yellow ingrained in the wood. It sounds wonderful. It is very playable is quite light weight. Do you think it has value?
The Les Paul guitar that Ed King owned that was stolen, ended up in this guys collection on the East Coast. He ended up giving it back to Ed after Ed gave him documentation of his ownership and info on it being stolen. BTW, Ed was in Lynyrd Skynard and came up with the opening riff for “Sweet Home Alabama”.
Framton said in an interview that the insurance co said the equipment was all destroyed by fire. Someone salvaged it, and it does have some scorching damage on the headstock. That is best I can remember from the interview.
Yes. the gear was in the back of the cargo plane and the tail broke off somewhat intact in the crash, so the guitar survived. How cool is that? Also there is an interview on You tube with the guys who had it and gave it back to Peter. It's from a radio interview. The guys were great and wanted Peter to have it back.
Although the statute of limitations is out on the theft and Clapton doesn’t have a legal claim on the guitar because of that (In the USA at least) I don’t believe the guitar will come out of hiding until Clapton dies. Because they could still attempt to sue to get it back and the current owner would still have to pay to fight the case. Even though he’d win. Joe Bonamassa said he saw it in someone’s collection and that it is a 59. Not a 60 as many thought it was. I absolutely believe Joe is telling the truth and he knows exactly what he’s talking about.
One weekend my buddy and I stayed at his grandmothers house in WV. Saturday night we began to snoop around and found hidden in a closet an old Gibson and Martin. No idea the models, just know they were very old and needed some TLC. Both still played great, just the strings looked to be about 40 years old.
A swedish facebook group just found Robos Thin Lizzy guitar. Someone put out a picture of a les Paul and Ask if the price was right. The first one to answer Said i think this is robos stolen les Paul. And the first Guy whent and bought it. And now its returned to robo.
The custom with the white pickguard?? Supposedly Robbo has owned an old LP with P-90s since before Thin Lizzy and recorded with it a lot...but I'll always think of that glorious LP custom with a wah when I think of him or Thin Lizzy.
@@danieljansson2310 But Scott Gorham was the guy who got the Deluxe. The band bought it for Gorham because he was playing a Les Paul copy from Japan, and the Deluxe was the cheapest Gibson in the shop. You can see him with the Deluxe and Robbo with the Custom in all the photos from the iconic era🤔
@@danieljansson2310 Ohhh interesting, I just saw a ton of pictures of him with it in the 70s. Some before the swap too. I learned something new today, so thank you for that. I always associated Gorham with the Deluxe because it was seemingly all he played and because his tone was always just so mini-hum while Robbo sounded like PAFs live and sometimes a strat in studio. I was shocked to hear about his P-90 LP in a documentary. Glad to know he got an old friend back.
When I was around 14, I got myself a brand new Strat ('82, still have it). Took it to my weekly guitar lesson. My teacher looked at it and said "You need to learn something by somebody who knows how to play that guitar" (i.e. a Strat). "Pick one, Hendrix or Clapton". I chose Clapton, and he selected "Stepin' Out" off Beano. I bought the Bluesbreakers CD (was my 2nd CD, still have it) It wasn't till years later I realized that actually it was a Les Paul Clapton used on it :/ He also had me do "Lay Down Sally" so I did get some Strat action too...
Such an important instruments being stolen from their artists, is not only crime against the artist, but also a crime against the World's musical heritage. The connection between an artist and his instrument can be very special, very rare, and sometimes it happens that no replacement can be found that inspired the artist to create the same songs as the stolen instrument. In this case, by stealing the Beano Les Paul, who knows how many more great songs were in that guitar that Eric would have realized, and that goes even now. I am sure if Eric got it back, he would be drawn to create with it, and who knows what amazing songs would result from that reunification. Whoever has it (if you know it's Clapton's) should return it to him just for that fact alone. You are impacting all our musical heritage when you keep a such an instrument from the artist who has a special creative connection to it.
I recently heard that Randy Bachman found the guitar he used on his most known songs. It’s fascinating how it was found. I don’t think he has it yet. It’s in Japan.
The Minnesota Burst, a 59 les Paul that was discovered in Montevideo MN was living unbeknownst to me, about 2 hours from my house in the frozen winter wasteland known as St. Paul
The rosewood strat that was built for hendrix was found. Songbirds museum had it. Thats what they claimed anyways but there was several built of each model. Its believed that only two prototype strats were built and maybe 5 teles built. Its also speculated they made a small run of production teles but im not sure.. Elvis had a rosewood tele as well that was sold at mecum auctions like 5 months ago.
A lot of conjecture about Beano but the skinny is that it's a '59 and still definitely 'lost' and was stolen back in '66, those are the facts that we know for sure. As to whoever might have it, well, that will always be a moot point until it actually turns up...........if ever.
The Beano guitar has been talked about for Decades! Cream rehearsed in a church hall in the village that Ginger Baker lived in at the time. The person who stole it went back the next night and stole the case... The collection on the East Coast is a guy with the initials DZ. not sure if he has it, but the other assumption is that it’s still in London. There is no statue of limitations on stolen goods in U.K. So it’s still considered stolen in legal terms there.
I think this stuff is really cool. I’m glad you guys try to document the guitars you acquire. I have a Guild Starfire IV from the mid 60s that I bought in a pawn shop in about 1990. It was well worn and some modifications were made. The previous owner clearly played it a lot. I sometimes wonder how it ended up in the pawn shop. But I’m glad it did.
Prolly drugs, from my experience that's pretty much only reason go to pawn shop cause they own you on selling. I once took in a roughly $300 guitar and dude wanted to give me $5. Just brought it home with me.

Me too! Man, when I think of the guitars I seen at pawn shops I thought were too expensive back in the day, if I had only known i.e. a 59 les paul in a downtown pawnshop in 1977, priced if i remember right it was $1000 -$1200, I thought that was outrageous!!
Sad thing is, creeps have been stealing notable guitars since the beginning. I remember reading that Buddy Holly had two of his Strat's stolen back in the '50's. (They're both still out there) Sir Paul had his violin bass stolen back in the 60's, same for George, had his first 12 string Ric swiped in the '60's. As Jiminy Cricket would say, "let your conscience be your guide" !
Yeah, it amazes me how many famous musicians have had their instruments swiped over the years...It can't be THAT easy...makes you think that most of the thefts are inside jobs...There's a recent interview that Joe B does with Terry Reid and Terry discusses how his LP was stolen (leaving behind the empty case) from the Filmore East dressing room while he was on stage - he makes a good case for it being an inside job... Hendrix's Rosewood strat was in the Songbird's guitar museum. Apparently it never shipped and they found it in their inventory whenever FMIC came about.

If that was the case Eric would already have it back, fact is Joe is quite happy to keep the guitar owners identity a secret because it may compromise Joe's access to yet more vintage instruments and in doing so inflating the prices. People say oh well he's just a custodian, he's a greedy pig that just never can have enough. He's part of the problem Just the Gibson CEO and Mark agnesi, they all perpetuate the myth of the 59 fuelling inflation in the second hand vintage market and assisting the Gibson custom shop as the only place mere mortals can get close to a 50s spec Gibson. 50 years later and Gibson still can't replicate a factory 50s spec instrument unless your prepared to pay over the odds.
interesting! In about 1972, when buying my first guitar at the #1 Manchester (UK) guitar shop (A1 Repairs) they were proudly selling what they said was a guitar owned by Peter Green. It was a bright green strat with a Gibson PAF-style pickup in the neck position. Way beyond my price bracket then (£300??) but I wonder if it was true. A1 Repairs was the musician's guitar hangout then.
Would be great to see another video on stolen and missing guitars, and how to protect your own. One cheap way is to hide a "Tile" (usually for things like wallets, keys, pets) in the instrument and case. They hide nicely in electrics under a chamber cover, like the trem cover, and some will even fit in the pickup routing. They don't affect tone or add interference. It's budget Lojacking. Insurance is a good idea, too Stradivarius wood wasn't from a flash freeze, but entire colder than normal years, like the "Little Ice Age" 1650-1715, and trees grown above certain height above sea level where it's always cold, as it makes the wood dense. A flash freeze isn't going to do that.

Bonamassa admitted he was joking. It's either still in the UK or it was stripped for parts. If it was outside the UK, there would be no reason to keep it hidden. UK law only applies in the UK, US law only applies in the US etc. There's no Statute Of Limitation' in the UK, so if it appears, in the UK, the guy holding it gets arrested. Also, Clapton has said he knows where it is, and has said he knows it's still in London. Likelihood is, it was stolen either because he owed someone money for drugs, or one of 'The Firms' was trying to shake him down. Gary Moore's No 1 Les Paul is alleged to be the one stolen from Ronnie Montrose.
There are a couple dozen stolen Lowell George Strats out there somewhere. If you have a '70s Fender Strat with a Tele PU in the bridge in natural or butterscotch it might be one of Lowell's many stolen Strats...
The story of George Harrison's "lucy" is nuts, from purchase, refinish, repurchase by Clapton, gifting to Harrison, theft, and return. Well documented by Norman Harris who was involved. Also are George's original J160E and Paul's original Hofner 500/1 dubbed "cavern" that are still missing.
Like Bonamassa's story there's one that Paul's bass is in Toronto. George's Gibson J160E (listed as Lennon's) was found in LA and sold at auction a couple of years ago. I think the owner of the Colts has it now. George's family has the other J160E.
Keith Richards' Dan Armstrong (the clear lucite one with the skulls) was stolen in the 70's and it's never surfaced. Ron Wood had a custom Zematis that was stolen and it's vanished too. There IS a video of Billy Corgan getting back the stolen Strat that played on Gish.
My uncle was a Nashville and elsewhere cat in the 30s. He bought a brand new Martin D-45 in 1938, the first year in the catalog. One of the most amazing guitars I've ever seen or played. After he passed away, someone found out about the guitar - I don't know if my aunt advertised it or what, but they offered her 10 grand for it, which she thought was a great price and took it. When my cousin told me about it, I could have died! I would have given her 10 grand and kept it in the family. There are really sleazy people out there and I guess always will be.
Back in the late 80’s Marc Bolins Les paul was still being disputed in ownership by the insurance company. His girlfriend at the time of his death, had walked with it and passed it to a friend it ended up being passed between collectors. I was offered to travel to Newcastle to see it with a collector and played it, the guy didn’t take it.
I thought there was still one more part to the Frampton Les Paul story: wasn't it in the 2018(?) flood in Nashville? No damage per se, but dampness got into it, or at least I thought I heard that in a Frampton interview somewhere? God Bless!
I think nearly everything regarding the 'Beano' burst, and Eric Clapton's Les Paul history is complete bullshit. I'd place a bet that nobody knows (or more importantly - can prove), that it's the 'beano' burst even if it comes around. Not only that if you follow some real interviews and real history, I don't even believe there was one single Les Paul that he owned, he had multiple bursts. This is at a time where they were discontinued, the SG was the new Paul and blues fanatics were flocking to the bursts. They were sold for minimal amounts of money second hand since they were (thought to be) out of fashion. Similar idea with how he bought a dozen 50's strat's that later became his next infamous guitars in various forms. 1:10 I am sure he loved Albert King as much as anybody else, but I think it's Freddie you mean to mention. In terms of the story there was definitely one Les Paul burst he favored and was stolen - but you can't even confirm that was the same one on the Beano album cover.. He is personally quoted in an interview saying he bought a bunch of Les Paul's, he is pictured using different ones in a very short period of time. The whole Greece story put a major monkey wrench in any tracking of his original Les Pauls because that's where history starts to get fishy. Nobody seems to actually remember one single line of events. I think its one of the most over sensationalized stories with the worst information, it's like this silly game of broken telephone. Everyone talks about it like he had one Les Paul until he later got the Summers Burst which is just not true. Ground guitar does a good job of covering his guitar history in great detail. It shows some of the inconsistencies in the story and I think they sum it up best in their opening remarks about it: Eric used this guitar during the John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers era, although it is likely not the only Les Paul he owned at that time. In his autobiography [Clapton: The Autobiography] Eric mentions buying a couple of guitars prior heading to Greece in 1966 and leaving one Les Paul behind after he bailed out and left the Juniors (a Greek band he had a short stint with). This could possibly mean that the Les Paul that he used in the early days of the Bluesbreakers, prior to the trip to Greece, was actually a different guitar. So to avoid any confusion, the Beano Burst is the guitar that Eric was photographed with during the studio sessions with John Mayall, which of course produced the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton album. That was Brad Paisley. Bill Crook was the one who was doing the refinish for him. Brad bought the guitar from Chicago Music Exchange for a very good price because it had been refinished.
Yeah beside stockpiling instruments the people you have mentioned have systematically pushed up the price to the stupid level we have today to bump their investment. Anyone buying 30% of the available market is just a speculator.

Different laws in different countries. The laws we have here in the US are not the same in the UK. The guitar was stolen in the UK. I agree with the thoughts, guitar thieves are scoundrels and I would want my guitar back. Be legal claims that it is your forever, no questions asked, is not true. Look up the story on Craig Chquico's Les Paul. It is very convoluted and in the end... the lawyers were the only winners in the whole affair.

It is here, in a private burst collection on the outskirts of Boston. Very well known collector, I’ve sold him 50’s parts in the past. I haven’t seen the guitar in person however. The only burst I’ve held and played was J Giels 59

Obviously, the East Coast collector JoBo seems to imply might be Dirk Ziff who has 300 odd bursts he is on the East Coast as one the real wealthy Aluminati think JoBo's Lawyers probably advised him to stop right there say nothing more. I imagine Dirk Ziff bought it unknowingly as nobody was doing the forensic analysis that is done on stuff like burst patterns etc. Either that or it's locked in a Vault by some private investor in Japan. Seemingly Ed Kings Red eye was stolen at gun point then some years later it ended up in Dirks collection. so the guy is not super fussy on provenance or when you are scooping up that many it matters far less.

It might be a bit unfair to call Dirk out on this but East Coast collector his name popped straight in my head and as far as I know, JB has dodged the question ever since, not sure he just said it for PR purposes as he is an as serious collector of this stuff as it gets. Seemingly it took some work for to get Ed Kings guitar back. All that said I don't really think at this point Clapton is that bothered he might knock out a few tunes on it if he put it up for auction but I genuinely think he has moved on a long time ago. For all that the guitar community would like to see them reunited one more time. Me personally I much prefer Clapton playing a guitar with Humbuckers despite the fact he likes Strats more. I watched some footage a while back of him playing live with a 335/345 and that sound suits his blues mode far better than his boosted fattened up Strat. just my preference.

I think you’re right. Guys like Clapton and Gilmour played guitar on some famous music, but to them it’s probably just “ a guitar I played”. I read an interview with Jimmy Page and he barely remembers what he played on famous songs and most of them were borrowed or stuff laying around the studio. These guys could go into a music store, take a guitar off the wall and noodle around, and it would automatically be worth double.

I know exactly where the Beano guitar is not, in my collection! LOL 8) A few years ago my local vintage shop acquired a 1954 LesPaul from a gentleman's estate in Buffalo NY. ( I'm between KBUF and KROC) It was in almost unplayed condition, and included 2 cases,, original chipboard and fine leather bag that was mint! It was a gold top. Also included a catalog, the original receipt, strap, and all other documentation. They had it for sale for $36k That was just too much for me at the time. After 6 months they had a sale, and reduced it to $28k. While I was trying to sell my pickup truck to buy it, it was sold. I had mixed emotions about that, but I still have my pickup and I'm happy about that anyway. (it was worth much more). A friend of mine also has a '64 Strat, and '64 black face deluxe. Original owner of both. I've been working on him for years. 8) I only wish I had everything I've bought and sold since 1968. 8-| LOL --gary

To add to the Frampton story, and I heard this from the man himself during his premier guitar rig rundown, he asked the gentleman who loaned him the guitar if he would consider selling it. He said that he wouldn't but that he would give it to him! How fucking cool is that?
Besides all the great stories of the artist and guitars the other story worth exploring is implied in the "Go Your Own Way" sitting on the pool table learning Frampton Comes Alive album - right there, that sets you apart from the crowd. Follow the crowd or go your own way is the pressure for each generation. My go your own way musical moment came in Grade 8, our teacher wanted students to select a musical composition for studying lyrics as poetry and story. He encouraged us to bring in the albums we listen to at home and we'd listen in class. Only two students brought in Albums, me and someone else. The class favorite by at least 99% was the other person's album Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. The teacher let me play my selection which was Elderberry Wine by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. I was way outside the box of being cool to the class and I took a lot of mockery because of it. I discovered the song on the" Don't Shoot Me I am only the Piano Player" album and rhythmically and musically the song had a story to tell. Looking back perhaps I was the cool kid for not following the crowd. I am sure looking back spending time studying Frampton was time well spent and you didn't really miss anything for not following the crowd.
I have an unusual guitar. It was built by my brother when he worked at Fender, it is a Coronado Wildwood with Stratocaster neck. It is around 1964 vintage and has had locking tuners and an E335 Tailpiece installed since its creation. It is very beautiful with and figured with streaks of blue and yellow ingrained in the wood. It sounds wonderful. It is very playable is quite light weight. Do you think it has value?

Framton said in an interview that the insurance co said the equipment was all destroyed by fire. Someone salvaged it, and it does have some scorching damage on the headstock. That is best I can remember from the interview.
Yes. the gear was in the back of the cargo plane and the tail broke off somewhat intact in the crash, so the guitar survived. How cool is that? Also there is an interview on You tube with the guys who had it and gave it back to Peter. It's from a radio interview. The guys were great and wanted Peter to have it back.

Although the statute of limitations is out on the theft and Clapton doesn’t have a legal claim on the guitar because of that (In the USA at least) I don’t believe the guitar will come out of hiding until Clapton dies. Because they could still attempt to sue to get it back and the current owner would still have to pay to fight the case. Even though he’d win. Joe Bonamassa said he saw it in someone’s collection and that it is a 59. Not a 60 as many thought it was. I absolutely believe Joe is telling the truth and he knows exactly what he’s talking about.
One weekend my buddy and I stayed at his grandmothers house in WV. Saturday night we began to snoop around and found hidden in a closet an old Gibson and Martin. No idea the models, just know they were very old and needed some TLC. Both still played great, just the strings looked to be about 40 years old.
A swedish facebook group just found Robos Thin Lizzy guitar. Someone put out a picture of a les Paul and Ask if the price was right. The first one to answer Said i think this is robos stolen les Paul. And the first Guy whent and bought it. And now its returned to robo.
The custom with the white pickguard?? Supposedly Robbo has owned an old LP with P-90s since before Thin Lizzy and recorded with it a lot...but I'll always think of that glorious LP custom with a wah when I think of him or Thin Lizzy.

I learned something new today, so thank you for that. I always associated Gorham with the Deluxe because it was seemingly all he played and because his tone was always just so mini-hum while Robbo sounded like PAFs live and sometimes a strat in studio. I was shocked to hear about his P-90 LP in a documentary. Glad to know he got an old friend back.
When I was around 14, I got myself a brand new Strat ('82, still have it). Took it to my weekly guitar lesson. My teacher looked at it and said "You need to learn something by somebody who knows how to play that guitar" (i.e. a Strat). "Pick one, Hendrix or Clapton". I chose Clapton, and he selected "Stepin' Out" off Beano. I bought the Bluesbreakers CD (was my 2nd CD, still have it) It wasn't till years later I realized that actually it was a Les Paul Clapton used on it :/
He also had me do "Lay Down Sally" so I did get some Strat action too...
Such an important instruments being stolen from their artists, is not only crime against the artist, but also a crime against the World's musical heritage. The connection between an artist and his instrument can be very special, very rare, and sometimes it happens that no replacement can be found that inspired the artist to create the same songs as the stolen instrument. In this case, by stealing the Beano Les Paul, who knows how many more great songs were in that guitar that Eric would have realized, and that goes even now. I am sure if Eric got it back, he would be drawn to create with it, and who knows what amazing songs would result from that reunification. Whoever has it (if you know it's Clapton's) should return it to him just for that fact alone. You are impacting all our musical heritage when you keep a such an instrument from the artist who has a special creative connection to it.
I recently heard that Randy Bachman found the guitar he used on his most known songs. It’s fascinating how it was found. I don’t think he has it yet. It’s in Japan.
The Minnesota Burst, a 59 les Paul that was discovered in Montevideo MN was living unbeknownst to me, about 2 hours from my house in the frozen winter wasteland known as St. Paul

The rosewood strat that was built for hendrix was found. Songbirds museum had it. Thats what they claimed anyways but there was several built of each model. Its believed that only two prototype strats were built and maybe 5 teles built. Its also speculated they made a small run of production teles but im not sure.. Elvis had a rosewood tele as well that was sold at mecum auctions like 5 months ago.
A lot of conjecture about Beano but the skinny is that it's a '59 and still definitely 'lost' and was stolen back in '66, those are the facts that we know for sure. As to whoever might have it, well, that will always be a moot point until it actually turns up...........if ever.

The Beano guitar has been talked about for Decades! Cream rehearsed in a church hall in the village that Ginger Baker lived in at the time. The person who stole it went back the next night and stole the case... The collection on the East Coast is a guy with the initials DZ. not sure if he has it, but the other assumption is that it’s still in London. There is no statue of limitations on stolen goods in U.K. So it’s still considered stolen in legal terms there.

I think this stuff is really cool. I’m glad you guys try to document the guitars you acquire. I have a Guild Starfire IV from the mid 60s that I bought in a pawn shop in about 1990. It was well worn and some modifications were made. The previous owner clearly played it a lot. I sometimes wonder how it ended up in the pawn shop. But I’m glad it did.
Prolly drugs, from my experience that's pretty much only reason go to pawn shop cause they own you on selling. I once took in a roughly $300 guitar and dude wanted to give me $5. Just brought it home with me.

Yeah, it amazes me how many famous musicians have had their instruments swiped over the years...It can't be THAT easy...makes you think that most of the thefts are inside jobs...There's a recent interview that Joe B does with Terry Reid and Terry discusses how his LP was stolen (leaving behind the empty case) from the Filmore East dressing room while he was on stage - he makes a good case for it being an inside job...

If that was the case Eric would already have it back, fact is Joe is quite happy to keep the guitar owners identity a secret because it may compromise Joe's access to yet more vintage instruments and in doing so inflating the prices. People say oh well he's just a custodian, he's a greedy pig that just never can have enough.
He's part of the problem Just the Gibson CEO and Mark agnesi, they all perpetuate the myth of the 59 fuelling inflation in the second hand vintage market and assisting the Gibson custom shop as the only place mere mortals can get close to a 50s spec Gibson.
50 years later and Gibson still can't replicate a factory 50s spec instrument unless your prepared to pay over the odds.
interesting! In about 1972, when buying my first guitar at the #1 Manchester (UK) guitar shop (A1 Repairs) they were proudly selling what they said was a guitar owned by Peter Green. It was a bright green strat with a Gibson PAF-style pickup in the neck position. Way beyond my price bracket then (£300??) but I wonder if it was true. A1 Repairs was the musician's guitar hangout then.

One cheap way is to hide a "Tile" (usually for things like wallets, keys, pets) in the instrument and case. They hide nicely in electrics under a chamber cover, like the trem cover, and some will even fit in the pickup routing. They don't affect tone or add interference. It's budget Lojacking. Insurance is a good idea, too
Stradivarius wood wasn't from a flash freeze, but entire colder than normal years, like the "Little Ice Age" 1650-1715, and trees grown above certain height above sea level where it's always cold, as it makes the wood dense. A flash freeze isn't going to do that.
I've been strongly considering putting a tile in one of the F holes of my 335.

It's either still in the UK or it was stripped for parts. If it was outside the UK, there would be no reason to keep it hidden. UK law only applies in the UK, US law only applies in the US etc.
There's no Statute Of Limitation' in the UK, so if it appears, in the UK, the guy holding it gets arrested.
Also, Clapton has said he knows where it is, and has said he knows it's still in London.
Likelihood is, it was stolen either because he owed someone money for drugs, or one of 'The Firms' was trying to shake him down.
Gary Moore's No 1 Les Paul is alleged to be the one stolen from Ronnie Montrose.
There are a couple dozen stolen Lowell George Strats out there somewhere. If you have a '70s Fender Strat with a Tele PU in the bridge in natural or butterscotch it might be one of Lowell's many stolen Strats...

The story of George Harrison's "lucy" is nuts, from purchase, refinish, repurchase by Clapton, gifting to Harrison, theft, and return. Well documented by Norman Harris who was involved.
Also are George's original J160E and Paul's original Hofner 500/1 dubbed "cavern" that are still missing.
Like Bonamassa's story there's one that Paul's bass is in Toronto. George's Gibson J160E (listed as Lennon's) was found in LA and sold at auction a couple of years ago. I think the owner of the Colts has it now. George's family has the other J160E.
Keith Richards' Dan Armstrong (the clear lucite one with the skulls) was stolen in the 70's and it's never surfaced. Ron Wood had a custom Zematis that was stolen and it's vanished too.
There IS a video of Billy Corgan getting back the stolen Strat that played on Gish.
Joe has it. it was a Marshall JTM45 2 x 12 combo. 2nd one came from Andy summers. lol

My uncle was a Nashville and elsewhere cat in the 30s. He bought a brand new Martin D-45 in 1938, the first year in the catalog. One of the most amazing guitars I've ever seen or played. After he passed away, someone found out about the guitar - I don't know if my aunt advertised it or what, but they offered her 10 grand for it, which she thought was a great price and took it. When my cousin told me about it, I could have died! I would have given her 10 grand and kept it in the family. There are really sleazy people out there and I guess always will be.

Back in the late 80’s Marc Bolins Les paul was still being disputed in ownership by the insurance company. His girlfriend at the time of his death, had walked with it and passed it to a friend it ended up being passed between collectors.
I was offered to travel to Newcastle to see it with a collector and played it, the guy didn’t take it.
I think Joe Bonamassa (him again!) owns it now...
I thought there was still one more part to the Frampton Les Paul story: wasn't it in the 2018(?) flood in Nashville? No damage per se, but dampness got into it, or at least I thought I heard that in a Frampton interview somewhere?

I think nearly everything regarding the 'Beano' burst, and Eric Clapton's Les Paul history is complete bullshit. I'd place a bet that nobody knows (or more importantly - can prove), that it's the 'beano' burst even if it comes around. Not only that if you follow some real interviews and real history, I don't even believe there was one single Les Paul that he owned, he had multiple bursts. This is at a time where they were discontinued, the SG was the new Paul and blues fanatics were flocking to the bursts. They were sold for minimal amounts of money second hand since they were (thought to be) out of fashion. Similar idea with how he bought a dozen 50's strat's that later became his next infamous guitars in various forms. 1:10 I am sure he loved Albert King as much as anybody else, but I think it's Freddie you mean to mention. In terms of the story there was definitely one Les Paul burst he favored and was stolen - but you can't even confirm that was the same one on the Beano album cover.. He is personally quoted in an interview saying he bought a bunch of Les Paul's, he is pictured using different ones in a very short period of time. The whole Greece story put a major monkey wrench in any tracking of his original Les Pauls because that's where history starts to get fishy. Nobody seems to actually remember one single line of events. I think its one of the most over sensationalized stories with the worst information, it's like this silly game of broken telephone. Everyone talks about it like he had one Les Paul until he later got the Summers Burst which is just not true. Ground guitar does a good job of covering his guitar history in great detail. It shows some of the inconsistencies in the story and I think they sum it up best in their opening remarks about it:
Eric used this guitar during the John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers era, although it is likely not the only Les Paul he owned at that time. In his autobiography [Clapton: The Autobiography] Eric mentions buying a couple of guitars prior heading to Greece in 1966 and leaving one Les Paul behind after he bailed out and left the Juniors (a Greek band he had a short stint with). This could possibly mean that the Les Paul that he used in the early days of the Bluesbreakers, prior to the trip to Greece, was actually a different guitar.
So to avoid any confusion, the Beano Burst is the guitar that Eric was photographed with during the studio sessions with John Mayall, which of course produced the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton album. Most of the photos from the Bluesbreakers era do indeed show Eric using a burst Les Paul, but due to things said in Eric’s autobiography, and due to fact that most of these photos are too grainy to see any detail on the guitar, it is almost impossible to figure out whether this is one same guitar or a couple of different ones.

Its probably in a secret collection, it might stay hidden because it was stolen ! But it would be great to hear its voice again someday ... Hope that day Eric will be still alive :(

Who was it that wanted a pink paisley Tele but couldn’t find one so he got an old black Tele to refinish and when they started sanding it back it was actually pink paisley underneath?
That was Brad Paisley. Bill Crook was the one who was doing the refinish for him. Brad bought the guitar from Chicago Music Exchange for a very good price because it had been refinished.
Yeah beside stockpiling instruments the people you have mentioned have systematically pushed up the price to the stupid level we have today to bump their investment. Anyone buying 30% of the available market is just a speculator.
