A friend uses beer kegs for projects. Welds them with SS flux core wire with great results.
I should've made mine like this . I cut mine in 2 halves and the bastard springs open in a slight twist had to get them to join up later when putting on hinges

Hi there, thanks for reaching out. To answer your question, yes, if you had a thick piece of steel in the bottom with the charcoal on top, once heated up it will retain heat longer than just the keg itself. We hope this helps!

Q: to cut in the door can I use a grinder or do you recommend plasma cutting?

How is it you are welding stainless? I have a Hobart 210 which I love and would love to be able to weld stainless.

how does the thermostat go on is it a simple magnetic peice you buy or do you have to make any holes for it?

Solid question. You will have to drill a hole. Depending on the thermostat you buy, just make sure you have about a 1/32" to 1/16" of slop for the hole to receive the thermostat. The fasteners should do the rest. Let me know if you have any issue.
What mix of gas did you use for the welds and you use stainless wire?

Nice! I own a the hobart 210 MVP and ive been using it for autobody work but never on stainless. When i get off this deployment im gonna make a grill out of the keg ive been lugging around since my wedding.

Are you able to do the same but with stick welding?
If you are proficient enough with stick you should be able.
If you stick weld it then make sure you are using the right rod. Stainless steel to stainless steel use a 308 rod. Stainless to carbon steel use a 309. And since it's thin metal use a 3/32 rod. A 1lb box is about $25

What gauge stainless steel trim did you use on the door

So no oxygen hole on the bottom?.. sorry I must of missed that part of what
It sits on the side that technically functions as the top of the keg.
I cut a keg like that but with a cutting wheel. The door worped.

I know it didn't hurt anything but I was a little concerned to see you strike an arc on a sealed pressure vessel.
I tend to be overly cautious about cutting and welding on or near sealed pressure vessels.

Your poor back. You should build a table or at least extend that one so it’s closer to you. As someone who is 6’2, the least amount of bending over the better
