That really strange yodeling/choking hoot at 2:27 they do gets WAY louder and more intense, that was kind of a mild example. I assume they make it when they see something they don't like. I hear it all the time at night, and it's flat out creepy.

I hear it all the time. There are bunches of them in my woods and they love to make that noise. They all join in and sound like a band of monkeys lol😂 I don't find it creepy at all, but you're right, it does get VERY loud

I have a pair that visit my backyard often and when they see my dog, they lean forward/down and make that "awock-awock" very aggressively at him. To me, it's clear they are telling him just how much they disapprove of him and his high prey drive!

I love this video! I've been hearing a barred owl in my back yard occasionally for a few months now. This morning, I heard a lot of crows making a fuss, and heard the owl again. It looked like one of them chased the owl away, but it wasn't close enough for me to be sure. Such beautiful creatures! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Go out with a good flashlight and see. They're not as afraid of you as you might think. Years ago my wife and heard then spotted with a flashlight 2 barred owls. We watched for about 15 minutes before going back to bed.

@@johnwaterbury4769 The first time I heard him, I gently opened the door nearest the part of my yard I heard him in, and he went silent. I thought I scared him off. One morning at daybreak a few weeks ago, I heard a pack of crows making a ruckus, and the owl hooting. . I looked out and it appeared they were chasing him away! I couldn't see well, though. Thank you for your reply. I do listen for him (or her?) every night 🦉

Do they ever just do one “hoo?” Like the last hoo in their traditional chugging type call? I hear barred owls almost every night and it sounds the same always but tonight I heard just one “hoo” for the first time. One hoo, several seconds later, again just one hoo. This has been happening for a few minutes now. I can’t tell if it may just be a different bird altogether.
