U.S. military used portable loop antennas on HF in Vietnam. I learned about this from an article in QST. I believe they were hexagon. Bolted joints for disassembly. Gold plating on the mating surfaces to minimize resistance of the joints. The resistance of a loop antenna affects performance. Resistance should be as close to “zero” as is feasible. Best design is large diameter tubing and TIG welded joints. Welds made by a professional welder. A very good loop antenna will have just enough bandwidth for SSB. Thus, An automatic frequency following tuner is very beneficial.

This was very detailed and informative video which answered a lot of questions. One the better videos on this subject. Thanks Guys!!!

Thanks very much. I appreciated seeing this. I wish I had got to it earlier. I am still exploring my loop as I have not had it fully installed very long. The Baby Loop replaced a homebrew loop and controller.
Having homebrewed a loop, I can appreciate the advantages of the Ciro. The tuner is very fast. This is especially noticeable when changing bands. The tuner appears to lock onto the frequency of minimum SWR accurately.
I have painted mine. I suspect that it would have been faster if I had a good aluminum primer. The Baby Loop is quite robust and anyone purchasing one should look at the weight specs as they may affect how you mount it.
I am still using my other homebrew loop that does 80-60-40. Tuning that loop is a major chore compared to the Ciro.
My space for antennas is very limited as I am in an urban downtown location. I doubt that any other antenna I could mount would do better.

I had one of these, they work very well for it´s size! You have a very small footprint for an antenna and i would say THIS Bayby Loop is defently more than a compromise. If so, it is a really good one!

I bought one of these 2nd hand with a 450C rotator - it's very good especially for nulling out QRM - handy these days 😞- it sits between my H dipoles and my chinois "all band" vertical in terms of efficiency - Great video!

Good overview. My Midi has been a wonderful antenna. About the only feature I miss is an amplifier keying pass-through on the controller - I'd love to electrically-ensure the amp is disabled while the controller is still tuning the loop.

What do u use these antennas for? If u don't mind me asking saw my naboir put one up thanks for any info?

Mainly HF RX on 20-80m, as I have an S9 noise floor and this lets me hear the world. I transmit mainly on a vertical.

Hands down the best Loop made! I run the midi and baby here in an HOA in the US.

Did you attempt to conceal or "camouflage" them? If so, how?

@@Supernumerary no, but I did stick it behind a young Magnolia tree. You can paint them or make a cover for them if you want. The baby loop does 40-10 meters and works fine at 6-8 feet.

A really very relevant video. These are really typical questions that amateurs ask.
What about those who would like to install it on a flat surface? Can the height to be respected at ground level be applied instead at roof level? Is there a minimum roof size that makes the effect similar to the ground so that the swr is corresponding?
At the Xenia hamfest, Ciro announced that there would be a new Bluetooth controller. Do you have any news on when they will be available?

How to connect this antena to power amplifier and another ATU such as ACOM 1200S and 06AT?

Does anyone know how mounting it to a tree would affect it. I want to attach a pole to a stump of a tree and I'm just wondering how the antenna will be affected..
    Thanks.

Loops ARE efficient. If they are not, where does all the lost energy go? Go max QRO the antenna will handle, take whatever "they" think the efficiency is and the rest MUST be dissipated as HEAT (right?). Key down as long as you are comfortable with your setup, stop transmitting, check the loop temperature. It will be cool. Answers anyone? Thanks Gary, great presentation!

I suggest that relying on temperature measurements to estimate the efficiency of the Ciro Loop will prove misleading.
To be fair, I am not an expert on antennas. As I understand it, antenna efficiency, (in the simplest case) is a function of the radiation resistance divided by the feedpoint resistance. The feedpoint resistance, in turn, is the sum of the radiation resistance and the loss resistance.
Given the construction of the Ciro Loop and the fact that it will be mounted outdoors, it will be able to dissipate a lot of heat. The antenna will stay close to the environmental temperature. This has more to do with its mechanical design and construction than efficiency as an RF radiator. The loop itself consists of a 50m thick walled circular pipe. To some extent the air variable capacitor at the ends of the circular segments will serve as a heat sink.

Great video! I have the Stealth (from ML&S). If time (and money) allow, I would love to try these bigger loops. The Stealth is great and sites on the grass. It as very low noise indeed, but in terms of TX / RX gain cannot compete with my DX Commander and EFHW. Mark, 2E0MSR
