(I'm currently leaning towards the Frontier and Ranger - fell in love with the Frontier at an auto show, but the Ranger seems to really pack a punch).

Thank you guys for making 1 cohesive video that compares most of the midsize segment. Also as far as overloading the Gladiator, if it’s a true truck it should be able to handle being slightly overloaded.
I will be faster, heavier, and have lower payload, but will feel more confident while towing because of larger displacement and heavier overall weight. It will cost more too.
@@dmegahan I suspect we won't see 2.7 rangers on the lots in 2024. Its probably going to be people's orders first with the occasional declined delivery that makes it to the lot. Much like the maverick situation was.
@@cliffordmontana4562I highly doubt it only has 5hp over the Colorado and has 30lb-ft less in torque numbers. They should have detunned the raptor engine and offer that instead of the 2.7.
That down hill made the biggest impact on me. I tow with Touareg and it can pull like a freight train for its size but it doesn't do well in a downhill application which always makes me nervous. Great test gentlemen.
Great video! Love the compare. The turbos had it especially at this elevation. The Gladiator felt like it was straining the most which I would rule out. With some towing experience I like factory TBC, temp gauges especially transmission and engine coolant, good engine braking, payload and tow rating. Lots of work here.
Always a fun shoot with Mr.Truck, and heck of a job grabbing all this info guys. There was one wrinkle I caught with the 35-60 test. The Ranger was a second quicker than the Colorado there, so it should have gotten the 5 points alone, the Colorado 4 points, The Tacoma 3, the Frontier 2, the Gladiator 1. Also, The Colorado uphill time was 7:54, the Ranger 7:50. There was the hiccup on the Ranger run with the tunnel being closed, but you had to slow down before you stopped the clock, and the signal light you use as the end marker was only a few car lengths ahead. You listed them as tied on this one again, as I know your metric is the 8:00 mark. That being said, the actual time should be the tie breaker, as the "8 miles" isn't exactly 8 miles anyway. I have no dog in this fight, but those things did jump out at me. While you guys have all of these trucks, you should do a Dyno test to see what they all are producing at the wheels. With the Ranger being mid pack on power and torque, yet somehow beating the rest in acceleration unladen and towing, someone's lying somewhere. Again, awesome work gentlemen.
Awesome video and series. Love midsize pickups. Love to see a video comparing long wheelbase three rows (suburban) towing a 30’ travel trailer up and down the mountain. A lot of bunkhouse floor plans for families fall right at that 30’ and 7500 GVWR and those families likely need the three row SUVs.

Best towing video on YT! I drive a 2024 Nissan Frontier and to me it sounds like the trucks with the turbo 4 engines are working harder to get up the mountain. Is it me or that what's happening?
Great work! I feel like the value category skewed the results a bit in the colorados favor since it is so cheep (and missing tons of features the others have) But regardless, I think the Ranger impressed me the most here. Definitely worth considering even over a half ton! If they make a tremor with the 2.7 eco, or give it a longer bed option, I’m sold for sure
Great job. You guys .A really great video. Its not just the testing that made for a good video.but it's the way you guys interact with each other that makes for good entertainment. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed. That's for everyone at TFL Truck.
I used to watch them a lot, til I realized how biased they are against Nissan. When Nissan does poorly they call it out and shrug like it's to be expected, when Nissan outdoes another brand they tend to ignore it. Even this video, if I read it right, Nissan beats Tacoma by the numbers. That being said Andre and Mr Truck seem far less biased to me.
I’m impressed with the new Ranger. The 2.3 turbo 4 is turning out to be a reliable engine. Its performance is more than adequate for 90% of what you need this truck to do. If Ford can get their production problems solved the Taco may be trouble for the sales crown.
The Ford dealers may need to back off on their pricing policies before that'll happen. They know when they have a good thing and they aren't even a little shy about charging extra for it.
@@khakiswag I'm sure you are correct about that and especially with the Taco's cult like following. I'm just more personally familiar with the Ford side.
Good review guys, I’ve said it before, to make the squat more accurate measure from bottom of rim not from ground so then taking tyre pressures out of it as they may be different .
How reliable will a turbo 4cyl be for constant towing is the true question. Im going to guess that regular towing would cause a lot of issues in the long run with all the hp coming from the turbos imo. I may be wrong
I swear you guys always deserve so many more views. So much effort put in, great editing, real people and not just constant shocked surprise face anytime a car or truck does anything at all. You guys are the most honest, best vehicle channel imo. Super cars are cool but how many Lamborghini 0-60s can you watch.
As a potential mid size truck buyer, I am not sure what to make of this testing. You have Colorado slightly ahead of Ranger. This tells me GMC Canyon will be even better. I am a Ford guy and I want a Ranger but the styling sucks compared to the competition. Ranger Raptor seems to be the only way out for me.
Great video! Really appreciate the time and effort put into this and I love the scoring sheet. That said, my biggest gripe is the "value". Value does NOT equal price and never has in anything. Value is based on many factors, price being one but not the top factor. In fact, most of the time the lowest price item is the least best value.
The Jeep Gladiator Mojave is the wrong Jeep to do an Ike gauntlet tow test with. Because it’s set up with an off road go fast suspension, which means high compliance springs and shocks along its a lower gear ratio set up for go fast instead of yanking heavy trailers around. But I don’t think using a gladiator sport or sport S with the better gear ratio, smaller diameter tires and lighter curb weight would have improved it enough to tie or snag 2nd place.
Great video guys. I really appreciate the interior reviews in these videos as well. So few Chanel’s include seat comfort ease of entry and exit from the cab, I find those things to be extremely important information, and greatly appreciate that both Andre and Mr truck sat in the driver seats and gave their individual impressions on each truck. Excellent info, thank you both.
2.7L ftw. Turbo V6 power until the tank is empty. Iforce max power until the tiny 1.87kwh battery is empty. So in about a mile towing uphill than you're relying on the turbo 4 banger.
@@prestondeters5093oh it's not? please enlighten me. The hybrid motor is to help get you off the line where gas engines are least efficient. Not designed for sustained performance. But please explain how it works.
to answer the question for what is different on the colorado is the tire pressure the last time was around 33psi compared to 38 or 40 psi this time may have something to do with it but i could be wrong
Based on the scoring presented. What gave the Colorado the edge was the price. Now if how they weighted the categories is representative of trucking expertise idk… 😅
Great work, you two! TFL always coming out with great content. I think this just shows that the competition has caught up to the Tacoma. Toyota better hope their reliability reputation keeps going. If not, they got heavy competition!
Another great video! Thanks. I noticed my Canyon does way better towing down and up hills with the adaptive cruise control set. It seems to know what gear to choose to prevent to many brake applications better when using it.
Cruise will automatically apply the breaks though. That’s the reason they don’t use it so they can measure break applications. Maintaining speed with cruise is easy until the breaks overheat. My 2019 Colorado wouldn’t need to break that much. It’s a really disappointing result for the new truck.
I would love to see an updated "2.7's vs the world" with the updated ecoboost and turbomax vs 5.3 and coyote up the mountain. all of them have been updated since they were last tested (10spds on the fords, gen 2 8L90 and more torque on the GM 2.7, 10 speed and DFM for the 5.3) Would be neat to see how they all fare towing the same weight (9k?) up the Ike compared to each other and the previous test results.

On your comments on fuel mileage in the Colorado, you should ask your contacts if with smaller displacement engines and turbos they have to run a richer fuel/air ratio to run the engine cooler? In piston aircraft fuel can be used to cool the engine by running rich but you burn more fuel. A good comparison would be the f150 5.0 vs 3.5 on the IKE?
turbocharged engines always have a difference in brake specific fuel consumption due to this necessity for extra cooling. On the colorado high output 2.7, they mitigate this a little bit with piston oil squirrels in the crankcase. Still seems like they could have gotten a few more MPG out of it, especially with the auto stop/start and capability of shutting off 2 cylinders in cruise
@@jastrckl thank you , I did not think about the piston oil squirts , would be interesting to see how they help in this cooling process and have a discussion on it . I wonder if the fuel air ratio is changed as the cylinder temps go up or if they detect detonation causing to go richer or leaner .
I thought the same thing. And with the Ranger they did it in 7 mins 50 sec's. In order to do that, you'd have to average 63.5 mph, if I'm doing the math correctly.
Can you manually shift it to a lower gear so you have better engine braking? All modern auto transmissions that I have seen allow you to do this, but I don’t know about the Ranger.
Very interested in the colorado for towing in the atvs and snowmobiles in mtns. I live colorado springs. I see high tranny temps on the colorado dash in the video. What are the actual temps youve been seeing.
It should help. I know my F150 Powerboost does amazing in this category in the mountains and hills when towing. Brakes on these hybrid trucks really last a long time relatively speaking......
That hybrid battery would be back to full really quick so not much of an advantage as the battery needs to be empty in order to take the energy generated. My hybrid maverick battery is full after going about half mile or so downhill. It's ecvt which sucks for engine braking after battery is full.
@@cwqrpportablefrom what I read Ford simulates regen braking even after battery is full. At least in the lightning. So I'm guessing your power boost works the same way. Awesome truck btw.
@@marklihsu Thanks, we absolutely love it. Yes, you’re correct about the regen braking in the Powerboost. Something else I’ve noticed is the turbos do not spool up as much as they do in the straight Ecoboost. It’s quite easy, in regular driving, to avoid the turbos. Also, in tow/haul mode when towing our RV, the electric motor is there to assist regularly. Ford did a nice job on this hybrid powertrain.
The Colorado with max towing is 7,700 lbs if i remember correctly and it didn't blow away the Ranger with the little 2.3L engine in it so it won't even be close to competing with the performance of a Ranger with a 2.7L in it.
@@drewelliott9062 no it did not blow away with towing. But I am saying, either engine you choose in the new ranger. Towing capacity is the same. If you do the eco boost V6 payload actually goes down but towing capacity remains 7500. So Chevy will still be class leading because it is rated for 200 lbs more.
If you’re towing over 7K on a regular basis you need to upgrade to a full size. These trucks are good for 5K towing if you’re doing it all the time. Never tow regularly at the limits of any vehicle.
Zr2 is a sweet looking truck and I think the best of the group ! Does not lose that much in tow rating either considering the great suspension it has .
I know this might sound like a dumb question to you guys, but I am new to this pick up truck world. I have a Jeep Gladiator Sport S with aftermarket 20 x 9 rims 35 12.5 RBP M/T. Do I raise tire PSI when towing. Normally I run with 28 PSI. On the side wall it say not to exceed 40 PSI.
Y’all really need an OBD scanner so you can get actual drivetrain temperatures, instead of “gear temp is at 1/2 on this [arbitrary, non-linear] digital gauge”
You guys said at 1:01:12 that the Colorado's hitch is more hidden than the Ranger, Mr Truck said "it makes it hard to put that pin in" and Andre said "the chain is behind this gusset I have to reach a little bit further. So why did you give the Colorado higher marks than the Ranger for chain hook attachment and the same marks for hitch access? Obvious error in your scoring there.
You guys need an OBD scanner tool that can give you live temp readings for all the systems, even on trucks that might have a numeric value on the dash.
This is one of the best videos you guys have ever put out. A ton of work you guys put is really paying off. I love seeing the head to head with all of these trucks.

Congratulations Mr. Truck on your upcoming nuptials. Always great to see an Ike with Mr. Truck and Andre. Thank you all for the work you put into testing the trucks. The Chevy (213 inches) is longer than the 1970 K10 long bed (208 inches) was.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm considering buying my first truck within the next month or so and have been trying to find some solid reviews on the trucks all over TH-cam. I found another video of yours which led me here and I have to say that these are the best reviews I've seen. So many people focus on aesthetic things (which are also important), but very few focus on the actual driving experience, testing the truck's capabilities, etc. This is exactly what I have been looking for to help me narrow down which truck I'm going to test drive. (I'm currently leaning towards the Frontier and Ranger - fell in love with the Frontier at an auto show, but the Ranger seems to really pack a punch).
Thank you for having a clean family family friendly platform.
Andre's videos are my favorite. He seems to be most unbiased.
Honestly I'd like for all these trucks to quit doing frequent refreshes in favor of reliability and price
Toyota basically does new generation every ten years. Not sure about the others.
The second Gen Colorado was from 2015 to 2022. That is a 7 year span for the Colorado and many said it needed updating.
Toyota did. Price kept raising.
That doesn’t encourage people to buy a new vehicle every few years. There is zero business benefit to making something that encourages people to keep the product for longer.
@@ouch1011 Yeah, you're right. But that doesn't mean there isn't a market for conservative buyers who want lower cost and more reliability. They can definitely make that profitable, but they might need to change their business model.
Great testing and comparisons ! Thank you guys for making 1 cohesive video that compares most of the midsize segment. Also as far as overloading the Gladiator, if it’s a true truck it should be able to handle being slightly overloaded.
Can't wait to see what the results are of the Ford ranger when they put the 2.7 EcoBoost in it
We hope to test this in a couple of months.
It will DOMINATE the midsize segment.
Thanks
Poor Mr. Truck, Andre is asking too much of his co-Captain… check the sound, stop the clock, write down these notes, write that smaller 😂 😂 😂
But Mr. Truck did great, and it was really timing sensitive stuff so he had to be on his game!
Yes, then he tells me I'm writing to big. Bouncing in a truck on the potholes of the IKE makes big letters
Thanks
They do manipulate the numbers and how some of the trucks perform, but it’s entertaining

Great work!
I feel like the value category skewed the results a bit in the colorados favor since it is so cheep (and missing tons of features the others have)
But regardless, I think the Ranger impressed me the most here. Definitely worth considering even over a half ton!
If they make a tremor with the 2.7 eco, or give it a longer bed option, I’m sold for sure
Years from now I think the Ranger’s styling will age better than the GM twins.
I don't think we'll see a long bed option, but Tremor in 2.7 is definitely coming at some point, and will be the truck to get hands down

The Ford dealers may need to back off on their pricing policies before that'll happen. They know when they have a good thing and they aren't even a little shy about charging extra for it.

Way to go, Colorado! Very thorough and entertaining review.
What a great video. Always enjoy the back to back comparisons

@@stronghold07ptx85they also automatically downshift, so they don't over use the brakes.
I would love to see an updated "2.7's vs the world" with the updated ecoboost and turbomax vs 5.3 and coyote up the mountain. all of them have been updated since they were last tested (10spds on the fords, gen 2 8L90 and more torque on the GM 2.7, 10 speed and DFM for the 5.3)
Would be neat to see how they all fare towing the same weight (9k?) up the Ike compared to each other and the previous test results.

The Nissan, up the hill, took so long to reach 60 that unless you were speeding up the hill there is no way you finished in under 8 minutes!
I thought the same thing. And with the Ranger they did it in 7 mins 50 sec's. In order to do that, you'd have to average 63.5 mph, if I'm doing the math correctly.

It will be interesting to see how the Tacoma hybrid with regen braking will affect the downhill performance.
It should help. I know my F150 Powerboost does amazing in this category in the mountains and hills when towing. Brakes on these hybrid trucks really last a long time relatively speaking......
And the 2.7 v6 in the Ford.
Is that the gear indicator on the outer edge on the speedometer on the colorado. The 8 blue lights on the edge lights up when shifting?????
When the Ranger gets the 2.7L it will blow the competition away.
It might feel better towing but the Chevy will still have class leading towing capacity, the ranger is locked in 7500 lbs across the board.
The Colorado with max towing is 7,700 lbs if i remember correctly and it didn't blow away the Ranger with the little 2.3L engine in it so it won't even be close to competing with the performance of a Ranger with a 2.7L in it.
Ranger is ugly as sin
@@drewelliott9062 no it did not blow away with towing. But I am saying, either engine you choose in the new ranger. Towing capacity is the same. If you do the eco boost V6 payload actually goes down but towing capacity remains 7500. So Chevy will still be class leading because it is rated for 200 lbs more.
If you’re towing over 7K on a regular basis you need to upgrade to a full size. These trucks are good for 5K towing if you’re doing it all the time. Never tow regularly at the limits of any vehicle.
