What an understanding man you are Peter. Not sure I could have been so forgiving as to give the person an alternative tree but it just shows the depth of your kindness and humanity. The world needs many more people like you. Glad your tree was returned 😊

Stolen trees absolutely break our hearts here. It's not so much the monetary value of the true, but it's that it's most likely not going to be cared for properly and we hate seeing beautiful trees get damaged or die. Like you shared, there's so much story behind each piece. We've had several trees stolen before, too, but unfortunately none of it came back even though we tried all methods (marketplace, ebay, craigslist, social media). We've now upgraded our security of course. Even the famous Pacific Bonsai Museum here had a couple pieces stolen a year or two ago, but thankfully, those pieces miraculously came back.

Peter you did a good thing, telling the story. I also face this in my apartment. My plant used to be stolen.Every time I bought a new plant from the nursery it was stolen.I could not catch the thief. I had a pet dog called Morphy, he used to bark whenever there was a rumble on my terrace, but I ignored.Suddenly it struck my mind and I ran upstairs and finally caught the thief.

Will definitely be revisiting. Also, completely accessible for a wheelchair user for those who require such access.

You are so wholesome, man. Good stories, but the thing is it’s not like these social media people… these narcissistic people. Fair would be an understatement, you’re a great human being.
This is more of a life lesson than a tutorial.
Some say net worth isn’t what you own it’s the way you treat others, what you put in to your community that indicates worth. I admire you. One day I hope to be able to meet you and at least shake your hand.

Thank you Peter I am so happy you managed to get your trees back, these stories are always useful to remind us that our trees do have a value, sometimes we lose sight of how much they are are worth too other people, to us the value is in the day to day work we do to keep them healthy and looking their best. The lady who stole the tree and then brought back, her conscience would not allow her to keep it, she was very brave I think to return it personally to you, she could have just left it in a place where she knew it would be found and leave. It was very generous of you to give her a tree for free, I am sure she learnt a great lesson in life from the incident that day.

Every tree has a story, some with many chapters. A nursery is a library of stories. Owners and staff in bonsai nurseries are the librarians. As well as the great technical and artistic advice, the thing I love about your work Peter is how you are the custodian of so many stories.

That's compassion from a good master. You understood that behind her act, maybe there was something other than that. It's not simple to forgive, but you fixed a negative fact with a positive one. Personally I can't think about steal something that is not mine. I used to gift to ppl with no effort, i don't ask anything and try to get if i can afford with my own effort instead of take or beg for something.Following the karma as action-consequence in all things, first of all respect for others.

I don’t know how common bonsai thefts are but another bonsai artist that has a TH-cam channel (Eastern Leaf) had burglars enter his nursery at night and steal several trees. It happened a couple of years ago and I think thanks to security cameras and alerting bonsai people eventually he was able to recover at least some of them.

Don't tell people how much your trees are worth, undervalue them when asked, make sure you know the people before showing your collection, the fewer people know, the better, make sure you have some form of security/protection. If they are stealing to order not much one can do sadly, they will get that tree. These are some lessons i learned from when i got hit.

I understand it's not possible for a retail store but personally I find not showing off my stuff, whatever it is, is the best way to not get it jacked.......... also Montana is the kind of place where trespassing and thieving is a good way to get yourself DISSAPEARED!!!! So it's not the biggest issue here.
