Tekken Tag was the best launch title. Was the first time I remember a game looking significantly better than the arcade version. Usually we’d play games at the arcade for a year then have the watered down version at home finally release.
I got my PS2 with Tekken Tag Tournament and SmackDown Just Bring It back in 2001 and was floored by how good it looked and a huge leap forward from the PS1 games.
tekken tag's graphics were so good when i looked at the back cover i thought it was fake, when i finaly had the game in my console as a child i thought it was a dream, it was UNBELIEVABLE
Strange to think that Rockstar had two launch titles for the PS2 and at least one game basically every year throughout the PS2 and PS3 generation and yet the only game they've put out since GTA V in 2013 is Red Dead Redemption 2.
They couldn’t make expansion content as easy i they can today. Only shame is most of that content is online only and doesn’t carry over to your single player experience.
"Games takes too long to develop these days" -- That what people said. GTA 4 took 3 years and 5 months to develop, while GTA SA took 1 year and 9 months then GTA Vice City only took 9 months
WHOOPS! Managed to miss off SSX in this video - it didn’t show up in my hugely reliable research and I’m truly sorry (it got 93% on metacritic). Thanks to Rob from PS Access for helping out with the intro! 💸YOU CAN BUY A SPORTS TIME SHIRT HERE 💸triplejumpshop.com/products/sports-time-t-shirt
For me TimeSplitters, Tekken Tag Tournament and D.O.A. 2 are undoubtedly masterpieces, but I also have a lot of nostalgia for Evergrace and the good ol' Judd Johnson
It seems like the system didn't really start gaining steam until 2001. We got Shadow Hearts, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 2, etc, and it was backwards compatible. Xbox pushed the envelope in the shooter department with Halo and the like. Truly a great time for gaming as a whole.
My favourite part of Eternal Ring is how the rings are literally ring sized, ring coloured and hell to pick up. What a soundtrack, too. And Evergrace’s soundtrack! Such a banger.
I love that you pick the Pens as your hockey team because each console launch finds them in seriously different states of their franchise. 2000 wasn't the worst yet, but guys like Rene Corbet on a top line show the doldrums soon to come.

Thank you! I’ve never ever ever understood what fantavision was all these years since it’s release and no one’s ever explained it. Makes perfect sense now!!! I was a dreamcast guy and then Got a ps2 for vice city and didn’t play it much other than that and big sports titles as I moved on to the big boy Xbox.
As a fan of the animé, I loved "ORPHEN: Scion Of Sorcery"...Despite it being janky and frustrating as all hell. I forced myself through it though, and actually gitted gud at the controls. My favorite part about the gameplay is charging up attacks while Orphen dutifully calls them out. It really makes you FEEL like an animé protagonist. 😛
DOA2 Hardcore wasn’t a PS2 launch title. It was supposed to be but it was pulled at the last minute so I got Timesplitters instead along with Tekken Tag Tournament. It was Friday 24th November, 2000. I had £400 saved from washing cars and delivering papers
It's unfortunate that the Armored Core games are overlooked because of their inaccessibility/difficulty. You can customize the controls however you want. By mid-game you're firing multiple missiles at a time boost staffing/crossing over enemies dodging lasers while firing chain guns like a boss. Super fun game once you learn it, like a Souls game. In my top 5 favorite games for PS2.
I got my PS2 with 4 games. Smugglers run, gungriffon blaze, ridge racer V and unreal tournament. Always wanted a video where they talk about those obscure games. Especially gungriffon blaze
Oh yeah, catchphrase time! I've heard a catchphrase before, but I've never said a catchphrase. So I'm going to make this super easy, barely an inconvenience.
I always felt that the PS2 had one of the worst launch lineups, ever. When I got mine, the first year, all I could find to play was SSX, The Bouncer, Red Faction, NBA Street, and Onimusha. Even Sony didn't have a game for their own launch day (FantaVision was released like a week later). I'm actually impressed by this list. I was a fool.
OH YEAH. Here we go, triple jump time!!! I've seen a triple jump video or two before, though I never seen a whole 30 minute video in one sitting. So I'm going to give this everything I've got
It took 3 more games for Armored Core to finally implement control scheme that used analog sticks, typical From Software. Also DOA2 in-game graphics look better than DOA1 FMV opening in PS1, crazy how big the leap between two generations.
Let me be clear-if you weren't there at launch, it might seem laughable, but Madden 2001 really WAS a reason to own a PS2 at launch, other than using the DVD feature. Think of all the football games that came before Madden '01 and even the ones that were of it's own generation. It absolutely destroys all of those, save for NFL2k or k1. If one bought a ps2 in 2000 or early 01, Madden was most likely a pickup. It truly was revolutionary and just beautiful to look at graphically (again, at the time) It's certainly notable and deserves a little more respect despite being just a football game.
I mean literally nobody outside the US gives a rat's ass about football so while there may have been a couple of curious folks, it was most definitely not selling consoles anywhere but the US.
Is it me, or was Mr. Sir Benjamin Potter suffering from a cold when he recorded the VO? Also Tekken Tag and TimeSplitters are the best PS2 launch games!
Wasn't Kessen a launch title as well??! Kessen is always overlooked:/ It's a bit simple or "shallow", but is an early and experimental PS2 game. It haven't aged all that well though. But the entire conecept and presentation of the game is still very interesting and unique. And the soundtrack is amazing.
I loved smugglers run so much, my brother and i would spend hours on end just driving around and using the game to play tag in split screen. Id give anything to have one more moment of that dumb fun we created for ourselves.
I bought Madden and Tekken when I got the system. I still love Tekken. I remember showing my dad how “real” madden looked (I was also 13 so I wasn’t the brightest)
