Absolute beast of a card still and I hope the 5000 series is going to have a similar gem of a card if the rumors are true about the performance of the new series. Greetings. I have had mine since new (2017), it is a Gigabyte Turbo, with the import prices and all that I think it was the best $830 invested in hardware, I had it first with an i7 7700K and 8GB of ram, I currently have it with it with a Ryzen 5 5500, 16GB of ram and an Asus Prime B550 Plus. Although these turbine designs are infamous for having higher temperatures than fan designs, the truth is that they have never suffered from too high temperatures (maximum 75 °C, with aggressive overclocking around 80 °C), however little by little I gradually improved its cooling in a personalized way: I added a 90mm high pressure fan in the casing just in front of the turbine, I made an aluminum backplate with many fins and two 90mm fans identical to the first one I mentioned, finally I placed a 120mm fan on the outside of the case just behind the video card grille extracting hot air. All this has resulted in the fact that with the 2000mhz gpu overclock, 12000mhz vram and 925mv undervolt, before I had temperatures that sometimes slightly exceeded 80°C, now I have a little over 60°C, I think it's not bad at all. air cooling. I still play at 1440p most games on Ultra or at least High. I plan to replace it with a second-hand RTX3090 / Ti or if prices drop an RTX4070 Super / Ti Super
How bad is the founders edition? I always heard that it isn't good due too the single fan. If I can get a 1080 msi edition or 1080ti edition I am sure the 1080ti is still better, but is it still the 30% ish increase or rather a 20% or mb 15%. Can somebody pls help?
I'm currently in the process of buying a friend's old PC. The thing may not really run as smoothly as it did years ago, but a 1080 with an entire PC attached for 70 bucks seems like a very decent deal.
@CanadianComputerCollector It's got an i5-6600k. Nothing really to write home about, but it's my first PC and I really can't complain about what I'm getting for the price. I might upgrade the motherboard to fit more modern CPU's and buy a better CPU in the future for a bit more oomph, but I'll see how it holds up first.
@@MiguelMitchelMichiel A 6600k is a great place to start learning about overclocking! I have a 7600k with a 5ghz overclock in my media machine. Those 6th/7th gen chips can be tuned up quite a bit with a cheap but decent cooler like a Hyper 212 (which is what mine has). I played BG3 on my 7600k/gtx 1080 machine at 4k and got a mostly solid 50fps.
There's a gtx 1080 triple fan for sale for $75. But the fans aren't working well, first question, will me changing the fans change the performance of the gpu, and second question, if it was used for 4 plus years will it still perform well?
Years of use have no effect on performance - LTT already tested and showed this. As for changing fans yes, it may change the performance. So long as it has adequate cooling though, it should perform to spec. GPUs tend to either "work" or "not", they don't usually degrade in performance unless they're throttling due to inadequate cooling. $75 for a 1080 is a killer deal. I'd even endorse Ripping the bad fans off, ziptie a good fan to the heatsink and call it a day lol but before you do anything just stress test it to see if it thermal throttles. If it doesn't, the remaining fans are still doing a good enough job to not need replacement.
My 1080ti (similar card) is still working. I've had it in use for 7 years and recently gave it to my wife for her pc. Still running. You should be ok. They sell fan kits on Amazon for 1080 cards. Fairly cheap too. Good luck.
$100 or less for a 1080 and $150-$200 for a 1080 ti can be found in my area. My usual minimum gpu for budget builds to sell. Preferred combo is a 1080 ti, 8th gen i7, 16g ram and m.2 ssd. All in a tempered glass case with rgb fans for a good $700 system to sell. Roughly $350 for cost, 6-8 hours of labor, takes about a month to make a sale.
I have the 1090ti and run msfs 2024 on high end graphics. When i first installed the sim the default graphics were set at low end, but I had a feeling my card could handle at least, high end. And it runs the sim very well. Not sure what fps I'm getting but it's a smooth experience and that is all that matters.
Did you mean 1080ti? I haven't heard of a 1090ti before but even today a 1080ti should handle almost anything at 1080p high settings. David Does Tech recently did a video comparing it to the 3050 6gb and his experience definitely reflects yours!
I picked up a EVGA GTX 1070 for $4 (!!) from a local recycling center thrift store, along with a couple other $4 cards. I need to test them but hey $4!!
I have a 1080 in my shed computer I got it for 90 quid and it works great for my vr driving games. I have a Titan X pascal in my home pc and it still kicks ass smooth as silk and still gets driver updates over 10 years later 😊
I have a super computer with 4 of these in it, they are connected so the system reads them all as one big graphics card, is that good enough for gaming lol.
I’m building a new PC but didn’t want a new graphics card ($700 yikes!), but was still expecting to spend $200-300 on a used one. Found a 1080 in a PC build group for shipping because they just upgraded their PC. Still an incredibly solid card and I’m stoked to finally have dedicated graphics for the first time!
Still running a $80 GTX1080 Gigabyte Gaming OC out in my garage PC paired with a 5600X/32gb 3200mhz Dual Rank/B550 Gigabyte DS3H/1tb SX8200 NVMe. It makes for a snappy shop PC and even can fire up a game on it for 60fps Ultrawide 1080p. Controller focused games usually. I have no plans to get rid of it as it's a smallish card that fits the case and was super cheap to buy. Just enough muscle for gaming and features like 4k decoding for streaming. Great card.
@@CanadianComputerCollectorI had a 5700x I put up for sale and also listed the garage pc’s 5600x and figured I would keep whatever didn’t sell first. Well someone wanted the 5600x for $100 so my garage pc just got slight upgrade to a 5700x. And just the other day I found a guy locally selling a 5700X3D for $140. So now the 5700x is up for sale again. Hope to get $120 for it for a cheap $20 x3D upgrade. So incredibly unnecessary. I did try to push the cpu with turning off vsync and running lowest settings in F1 22 and was hanging around 220-240fps which likely the 5700x would have also achieved. Too bad my monitor is only 60hz as I prefer always synced visuals and no tearing. The 3D will get no workout capped at 60. 😂
I would get 6600/6600xt/6650xt if you have full gen4 support. Due to the halved 8x bus pairing better on modern hardware. If on an older gen3 setup get the 5700xt/6700/6700xt/3060 or even a 1080 for $90 or 1080ti for $120. I would lean towards newer cards though. All these cards are 16x bus so even on a gen3 system that still get what they need bandwidth wise.
Recently bought a GTX 1080 Ti EVGA FTW3 for my stepdad's birthday for £160 on eBay. It was a bit dusty (clumps of dust in the fins and under the fans) furthermore it ran hot, really hot so I decided to take it apart and apply fresh thermal paste, also gave it a clean. Thermals are perfect now. Was hitting 80c quickly, now never exceeds 68c. It's been a great upgrade for him, coming from a 970. He loves it! (We also snagged an absolute BARGAIN on eBay the following week which upgraded his whole platform to AM4. A 5600x, Asus TUF B450M PRO-II & 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600CL18 for £200 😱 that platform upgrade has been the game changer for him. He was on an i7 4790k. Happy days :) I have a 5800X3D & 4080 Super but man am I impressed with his 5600X & 1080 Ti. He's got a 1440p 165hz monitor and most of the game he plays (mainly racing games as he's got a whole SIM setup thing going on) he's easily clearing 200fps most of the time
I currently have a gtx 970 with i5 8th gen and im gonna sell it soon and im thinking about upgrading to a 1080ti, should i do it? I only play fps games and want to keep the same card for at least 5 years
If 1080p gaming is your thing its great. I just got rid of my GTX 1080 to move up to 1440p. If I was sticking at 1080p Id have kept the 1080 going for even longer.
I strictly play in 1440p on my 1080Ti and its still pumping with some graphics setting changes depending on game. I feel like I could just get a 1080p monitor and keep this thing going for a few more years once the wear starts to really show. I might have to hold on until the 50-60 series.
Still running an i5 6600k / evga 1080 machine which I built in 2016. Plan to upgrade soon... not the GPU though, it's a beast, the CPU is really showing it's age as of late. I also run this on a 1440p/165hz monitor and it works great.
The 6600k should have a lot of room for overclocking. I have a 7600k with a Hyper 212 cooler running at 5ghz as my media machine and the 7600k and 6600k are almost the same chip.
They are great cards. i have the 1080TI in my 2012 MacPro and a spare 1080 in my GPU collection. still plays games pretty good on my Mac. Love it. Great Vid oh neighbour. =)
Just built a system with all the parts I wanted. Not necessarily the best by any means. 7700k and a 1080 ti being 2 of the most wanted parts on my list. It brought a huge smile to my face and plays so damn good
If the price is the same the RTX 2070 is slightly (like 5%) better and a generation newer so it can expect driver support for longer, and has the RTX features which can be really nice even outside of gaming. If the price is not the same, buy whichever is cheaper.
@@CanadianComputerCollector Yes Sir! Hard to shut this one down, but I need the Thermaltake Core X9 case for next build, an i9-13900k/4090. Wife is getting an i7 12700k/3080Ti in a Lian li case. Not sure if I'll keep the 1080Ti or donate to a relative.

I made a deal a couple years ago that was almost exactly the same for my 1060 3gb plus $75 to a friend for a 1080. That 1080 is in my media PC and still going strong. I'd say it's worth it.
The Last of Us" versuchte). So habe ich mein Asus Z77-A Mainboard mit 16 GB DDR-3 2400 gegen ein MSI B550 mit 32GB DDR4-4000 und AMD R7 5800X3D getauscht und bin jetzt immer noch voll zufriedn bei meinen Games in 4k die so im Durchschnitt bei 70++ FPS liegen ^^ (Diablo 4 mit FSR so 82 FPS)
I upgraded to a rx 7800 xt because my 1080ti was running hot like 67 Celsius, the amd card runs 56 under load , and it runs faster and higher resolution like 4k in al of my games , 1080ti was a awesome card .

I do have a 7800X3D running with it though and waiting for the 5090 to release or 5080 to replace it. had it since launch.
I just upgraded for a 1080 8GB to 4070 Super 12GB. For someone like me doing 1440P gaming it’s absolutely necessary. 1080 8GB cards are very inadequate for 2K gaming today. Most games use 8GB of VRAM minimum at 1440P and upwards of 13GB of VRAM on some games. 1080Tis may be more relevant with 11GB of VRAM but remember some games demand more than 11GB of VRAM at 1440P today. This isn’t as bad on a RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 because you have access to high quality DLSS… 1080Tis lack of DLSS makes them still, relatively obsolete. Game devs are starting to expect gamers to be using upscaling and are pushing graphical feature sets to exceed hardware performance. If you don’t have a card than can AI upscale you aren’t playing games at the limit today. Especially not with a 1080ti. If it shipped with 16GB of VRAM it may have ended up more viable but we’re officially past 11GB being enough. I brought up my purchase of 4070 Super because it cost me $599 and it’s 12GB of VRAM is already obsolete. Hogwarts Legacy and a few other games require me to drop my settings and run frame gen and DLSS even with RT off! So how is a 1080ti okay today? Maybe if you’re into 1080p gaming at lower settings… but what’s the point of that?! Bad take IMO.
where i live you can get a used 6600XT/6650XT for about the same price as a used 1080Ti so not much reason to go for a 1080Ti tbh, my 6600XT consume about half the power of a 1080Ti
Nice! Where I live those cards are still $50ish more than a 1080ti but I looked it up and the performance is very similar. Assuming you don't need the dedicated video encoder, that's a solid alternative!
I still use a 9800gtx+ on an i5 4th. Considering a 980 or 1080 but you cant trust sellers. I may just grab a 580 & call it a day. I dont care for newer titles but there are some worthwhile that are older but require 1-2gb vram minimum.
A 1080 is way better than a 980, but a 580 is going to have super old drivers and be power inefficient. Honestly I'd buy a GTX 1060 before I bought a 580. It'll be more powerful and power efficient - even the 3gb model.
The GTX 1080 is great BUT, I just sold my MSI gaming 1080 when I picked up a cheap 1660 Super, much less power use and heat, smaller and newer drivers. It makes a good encoder also. Long live the GTX1080 though!
@@CanadianComputerCollectorYep, we have a bunch. And at least two other tech channels I follow use 'em, too. We like to spot them at the shops we see on the BBC's "Antiques Road Trip."
Decent but for some reason usually goes for the same price as a 1080, and the 1080 is a superior card. If you get a good deal on one, there's nothing wrong with a 1070ti just make sure you check the value of a 1080 on your area before you buy!
Hi and thanks for the video and all the advice you’ve provided on the comments section . Do you think a gtx 1080 i7-6700k 16gb will run most games on a valve index ? Also if not I was thinking of changing to a gtx 1080ti with the same specs but I was worried that the cpu would cause a bottleneck but as it’s liquid cooled I could perhaps overclock to 4.7 ghz - do you think this would overcome most the bottlenecking? Cheers Paul
Tried overclocking the cpu to make it last a little longer? If you're going to be replacing it anyway, might as well squeeze it for everything it's got before you upgrade!
That generation is really easy to OC and handles it quite well. I have a 7600k running at 5ghz with just a hyper 212 cooler and it's been super reliable. Has that OC on it for 3+ years.
People is forgetting you can get a Titan Xp for the same price as the 1080Ti, I use two Titans Xp in SLI and it equals the performance of a 3090 for more than half of the money...
The 1060 6gb is solid performance if you can get it cheap enough. Like $50 or so. If you're tm talking 1060 3gb though, then you really want it dirt cheap.
@@LexyDaShmexxy it might not be perfect but I wanted a clip to illustrate our point. We are also comparing Nvidia to Nvidia so bias isn’t a problem here. What’s your beef with it?
Not the greatest gpu ever, just a symptom on how Graphics have stagnated. The 10xx series doesn't do anything special or anything innovative, it just happened to sit at the bottom of the performance wall, that all three companies are struggling to climb right now.
Yes GPUs have stagnated, but the performance leap of the 1080 over even the titan X was astonishing, especially for the price. The 1080 raised the bar. I hope to see it happen again some day soon!
Nothings beats the price for performance? An RTX 4060 8GB without DLSS will out perform a 1080Ti for ~$40 more for a new warrantied supported graphics card. With DLSS Quality it shreds the performance of a 1080ti and can ray trace light games. AMD 6650XTs are almost the same price as nice used 1080tis and out perform 1080tis without upscaling. Did you guys do ANY research. Or just said “this will be a cute video for broke boys”
lol where do I even start with you? The two cards you quoted both sell for $400usd plus all day on eBay and here you are stating they cost $40 more than something that is between $125-$200usd?
Could you imagine using a GPU from 1997 and 2004?
The performance of the 1080 is insane.
How bad is the founders edition? I always heard that it isn't good due too the single fan. If I can get a 1080 msi edition or 1080ti edition I am sure the 1080ti is still better, but is it still the 30% ish increase or rather a 20% or mb 15%. Can somebody pls help?
On the used market you should just take whatever you can get for the best price. Look for both and when you find a good deal on one snatch it up!
I'm currently in the process of buying a friend's old PC. The thing may not really run as smoothly as it did years ago, but a 1080 with an entire PC attached for 70 bucks seems like a very decent deal.
Worth it for the gpu alone. The rest could be scrap but if the 1080 works it's still a good deal
Good luck.
@@talon1706 I got the 2060 super with i5 12400f combo, I'm very happy with the performance
8th gen is such a big leap because they added more cores finally!

That's a great card for a first GPU
My 1080/3700x setup should be perfectly fine for a dedicated streaming pc in a dual pc setup, right?

Still running a $80 GTX1080 Gigabyte Gaming OC out in my garage PC paired with a 5600X/32gb 3200mhz Dual Rank/B550 Gigabyte DS3H/1tb SX8200 NVMe. It makes for a snappy shop PC and even can fire up a game on it for 60fps Ultrawide 1080p. Controller focused games usually. I have no plans to get rid of it as it's a smallish card that fits the case and was super cheap to buy. Just enough muscle for gaming and features like 4k decoding for streaming. Great card.
For a "garage PC" that's sick. That's not far off the specs of the PC I use for gaming and editing!
Which one is better value? This or rx 5700 xt, 30 series gpu and rx 6000 series gpu?
That depends on how much you have to spend and what is important to you.
I have a 5800X3D & 4080 Super but man am I impressed with his 5600X & 1080 Ti. He's got a 1440p 165hz monitor and most of the game he plays (mainly racing games as he's got a whole SIM setup thing going on) he's easily clearing 200fps most of the time
Incredible!
I currently have a gtx 970 with i5 8th gen and im gonna sell it soon and im thinking about upgrading to a 1080ti, should i do it? I only play fps games and want to keep the same card for at least 5 years
If you get a good deal that should be fine. Make sure you have enough PSU to handle it though
If 1080p gaming is your thing its great. I just got rid of my GTX 1080 to move up to 1440p. If I was sticking at 1080p Id have kept the 1080 going for even longer.
It is bonkers for 1080p and okay at 1440p, but you're not wrong to upgrade when you move on from 1080p.

DLSS isn't the only upscaler. FSR works on these cards which helps keep them relevant.
Note: this video isn’t about playing games “at the limit today”
Well ya, that's because 1080 is a 1080p card
where i live you can get a used 6600XT/6650XT for about the same price as a used 1080Ti so not much reason to go for a 1080Ti tbh, my 6600XT consume about half the power of a 1080Ti
