  • Durham has a lot of bad and dangerous areas, but it's improving in the downtown area.
In this video we tour downtown Durham, and check out the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DPAP), the American Tobacco Campus and the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).
We drive through downtown Durham, and then check out the old Durham Bulls Athletic Park, where they filmed the movie, "Bull Durham".
Then we head to the Duke campus and check out the Duke Chapel and Cameron Indoor Stadium where the Duke Blue Devils play.
This channel talks about America, different states, education, travel, geography and what it's like to live in different places in America.

I'm always a little surprised at how sparse downtown Durham can be during the day on the weekend compared to Raleigh. Urban development has definitely helped clean up the downtown, especially in the past 5 years or so. That said, there has always been a wider economic gap in Durham, and it seems to be getting more concentrated now due to rapid population growth and increased cost of living. Good thing is, with this kind of growth, there are a lot of opportunities in the area for people to capitalize on. I work in consulting within the construction industry, so it's interesting to see this stuff first hand.

Oh really, I bet you haven't drove through Research Triangle Park, or Duke University Campus. In case you haven't know, Durham is becoming a tech hub, for companies like Amazon, Google, etc. Not only that, we have Government Agencies like the EPA, Cisco, GSK, NIEHS, & so much more. Also we have an Amazon Distribution Center, in Durham. How many towns have you drove through that has an Amazon Distribution Center, & lots of government agencies like the EPA.

I recently moved from Durham after living there about 7 years. I loved it there! It's family oriented, full of hard working good and kind people. There's lots of jobs and education opportunities. Most of the many available jobs there pay well and the cost of living is reasonable. It's multicultural and diverse, with people living there from all different parts of the world. There's lots of beautiful outdoor areas, parks and nature to enjoy. There's sports stadiums, museums, broadway shows, musicals and concerts at DPAC. In my opinion Durham, North Carolina is a great place to live.

Where they can get a full glimpse of downtown and seen that it is inhabited by living people...lol the crime stat was definitely real. The gentrification is rampid here. They are instituting more affordable housing options but they are pushing out 100s of people and families like you that have lived here for decades for these new high rise apartments that cost nearly $2000 for a studio, yoga studios, and coffee shops. I visited both Raleigh and Durham in April of this year. I liked both but I actually liked how Durham feels like it still has some character left in it, how it’s still not overly developed and overly expensive to enjoy a restaurant. I feel as though it’s improving and I hope developers stop the “luxury” rentals. It’s in every city and it’s played out.

It’s like a smaller downtown of Greensboro with less traffic and people, I love Durham. It’s awesome to see it transforming so rapidly, especially residential, and mixed use projects like Durham city center tower.

    • @NickJohnson

and not as ghetto as greensboro, which is BAD. like winston!

    • @disracenboi336
      @disracenboi336 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Nick Johnson woah now, Greensboros crime has been drastically declining as the city continues to grow and more money is pumped into the local police departments and other civil services, it was also named the 18th fastest growing city for millennials in the USA, outpacing Raleigh and Austin TX in net millennial migration in 2017 and 2018, you would be shocked if you drove through downtown these days, there are so many large construction projects and high rises under development, it’s quite impressive to see, I also appreciate the city beautification projects with two very large urban parks In the city center with cafes and eateries, more planted trees and ease of access with the digital kiosk navigators.
This city has undergone a complete 180 since the early 2000s. However the other side of the equation is, people feel the downtown area has been completely gentrified, especially the ball park area which is a booming development hot spot with the tanger center (GPAC) being built up the street around the current office towers, or a couple office towers going up around the ball feild, alot of homeless people are being kicked out of the downtowns urban green spaces, so it’s not all roses, however Greensboro proper is exploding wth growth at the moment and would make an excellent content for this channel. Only issue is, traffic sucks and there is Construction *everywhere* but it’s interesting to see this once spare city transform so damn quickly within 3 years.
I used to hate this city back in the early 2000s, but I’m glad it was able to make a complete 180. Downtown was literally being borded up and shops closing left and right with the homeless running rampant, it was insane.

Definitely inland NC is on my bucket list for a vacation. Wilmington and several of the shore points were the areas I have visited. Same holds true for me in SC, where I have only been to Garden City and the Myrtle Beaches. In Virginia, I have seen the majority of the state, mostly by bicycle.

This a nice video of the Bull City. Its been 49 years since I've lived in my native Durham, North Carolina. Durham has been gentrified like many large and small cities. Many of the neighborhoods in the Bull City are still without street lights and sidewalks and it is still a segregated city between blacks and whites as it was 66 years ago when I was born. There were no Mexicans or Central Americans living in the Bull City when I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Many traditional black middle class Durham neighborhoods are now barrios displacing native black Durhamites.
Sending a shout out to the Durham High and Hillside classes of 1973. I attended Whitted Junior High school with many classmates at those schools in the late 60's up into 1970. I am now a resident living in New York City (Manhattan) for almost 50 years. I no longer recognize my native Durham when I come home. Many of my childhood friends and classmates are dead or have moved away like me over the years. 😢 😭

I hate that people use the homeless population as a downside of a city. There’s still people and shouldn’t be looked at as a burden. LA has one of the biggest homeless populations in the world and people still love moving there.

The "regular" street people one encounters in Downtown Durham aren't homeless. They live in the nearby projects and walk to downtown. They receive public assistance. As far as panhandling goes Downtown, while annoying, the regulars are pretty tame. I've seen much much worse and more aggressiveness in other cities. The area can be dangerous after midnight. You will hear gunshots several times a week.

I'm sorry Durham, Winston, and Greensboro's downtowns are not white and affluent enough for your taste. We all know what the term 'ghetto' is code for. You clarified this when you gleefully stated that Durham is not as dangerous now because it is more gentrified. Don't you understand that most of the crime you claim to be fearful of is not centered in the areas where the typical middle income person lives? If you avoid certain pockets of impoverish areas, you will never know crime exists, except for what you see on the local news. I live in Greensboro and we have very little, slum, rundown and vacant buildings in the center city. The only thing I can figure is that you came to town during A&T's homecoming and saw too many black faces in the streets, and your mind equated that as being 'ghetto'. That is the same thing others do when they pass through Charlotte during Ciaa tournament week. Before you make blanket statements about a city and it's culture you should first educate yourself about why things are, and the long process it took for it to get that way. If you are going to ride through a city, show the entire city and not a white washed version. What you see as ghetto, other might see as culture and diversity. Taking us to Duke and driving around campus does nothing for us, -considering riding around Duke is all 99% of us will ever be able to do. We can't get in, and if we did, we could not afford the tuition.

Where are the people? From a NJ perspective I can’t image such empty streets.

I’m from durham and I love my city. Not all areas are bad. Everywhere has lower income areas. And every where has some kind of gentrification too.

Durham is not "really bad." Yes, there is poverty and gang activity but it is not widespread. Yes, it's a good idea to have a security system. Durham is also much larger than what you see here. I live in SW Durham near Southpoint, and it's very safe, with most crime limited to "property crime" -- car break-ins and a few house break-ins. But they are VERY few and far between. It's a great place to live in non-COVID times -- lots of live music, farmers markets, good restaurants; it's a diverse city with a commitment to social justice. Trumpazoids are not going to be happy here; it is a liberal enclave, as is much of the Triangle, nestled in between a lot of red areas. I moved here from up north 5 years ago and hope to be able to stay forever.

@@pillcosby2469 I was born in Durham in 1955. Although I've lived in New York City for the last 49 years, Durham is a violent city according to my family members living all over Durham as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation Durhamites. By the way a friend of the family moved back to Durham from Washington, D.C. purchasing a home out near Southpoint and crime has entered that area as well. There is no safe neighborhoods anymore.
