I Drove Through The Worst Parts Of Charlotte. This Is What I Saw.

  • Dang Charlotte has some bad areas, but they are way better than they used to be.
For this drive, I took highway 321 from the mountains of North Carolina into Charlotte. My goal was to visit the worst neighborhoods in Charlotte. As we’d see, these worst areas weren’t actually as bad as they used to be, nor are they that bad, compared to most of America’s largest cities. The day was Friday, October 16, 2020 and it was high noon.
After extensive research, it was determined that there are two different bad areas in the Charlotte metro area, and both are on the city’s northwest side. The first area I would visit is a neighborhood that ranks as the poorest and with the most rundown homes. This area is called the Thomasboro-Hoskins neighborhood. Most of the buildings are industrial type places and much of the retail is discount outlets like Boost Mobiles, Dollar Stores and liquor stores.
This part of town is about four miles outside of downtown proper, and a 10 minute drive from Charlotte’s main city center, filled with banking and tech and healthcare companies.
Now, Charlotte has been undergoing a lot of gentrification, and many of the worst parts of town have been cleaned up or torn down completely, to make room for newer model homes, condos and retail. In addition, Charlotte never really had any really TRUE ghetto hoods - outside of some housing projects, and certain pockets on the north end, it’s not THAT bad. Sure, Charlotte has issues with gangs and shootings, but there aren’t any really large terrible areas here, considering that this is the 15th largest city in the country. Charlotte doesn’t even rank in the top 100 in terms of dangerous US cities. That’s quite impressive.
Homes in this neighborhood average about $100k.
The second neighborhood we’ll visit is the most dangerous section of Charlotte, an area called Tryon Hills. This is the undisputed most dangerous part of Charlotte, and actually ranks as the 11th most dangerous neighborhood in the US. The area is only a mile north of downtown, and is between the streets of Tryon, Graham, Atando and Dalton. Again, like the other neighborhood we visited, this is tame compared to the massive ghetto areas I’ve seen in the past.
And we head into downtown from the worst neighborhood in this city. And it wasn’t even that bad, was it?

I'm from Charlotte and was raised in the Hoskins community. My parents stayed there for over 40 yrs. You're off base. This is a poor working class community but not the worst of Charlotte as you're portraying. Many of those I grew up with are now in respected professions and/or went on to college and graduate schools, me included. We didnt have a lot but we were proud of what we had and it was a true sense of community and for the most part it still is. You cant be from here. This is not "the ghetto". Its like every other minority community that receives very little resources and improvement investments from bonds or private investments.

Sugar Creek area was not mentioned yet they were always on the news. Central Ave not good either. I lived in the University City area for four years beginning in 2006 and then Steele Creek for 3. I won't live in a city again but at least Steele Creek was fairly nice. University City was rough for me to get used to although I know other cities are worse.

I moved to Charlotte 17 years ago just before property values skyrocketed. It's insane how expensive homes are there now. It used to be affordable not too terribly long ago. 9:57 - Statesville Ave - technically it can be considered bad. The strip club on your right, next to the Pilot station, featured the murder of a young woman caught in the crossfire of a shootout and was featured on The First 48. However, a ride towards Uptown on that same street will run you into new houses starting around $350K+, so I don’t consider it a very “bad” neighborhood any longer.

Charlotte is gentrification on steroids what at one time was dangerous inner city neighborhoods are gone. Earl village Belmont and Pegram , Oaklawn Gibbs and Kenny st as dangerous as any street in America doing the Seventies, Piedmont Courts ,Brookhill Southside homes. Of all those areas Southside homes is the only survivor . All those areas have been gentrified or razed and the people was forced to the areas you see at the beginning of the video which is outside of the inner city. I was raised on what is now the most dangerous and delipidated area in Charlotte Cummings Ave they changed the name to Catherine Simmons but it has not stopped the killing. Take slow ride down it and some of the side streets guaranteed to make your heart pump a little faster.

It's only southern NC, not southern TX, GA, or FL so it doesn't get that hot. There are only Priuses and small amount of Teslas for electric. Very few people have them. It won't be a hit unless someone gets rid of our oil. That means electric Harleys too 🤣. Not many people will buy into electric vehicles unless forced by communism. As someone whose family moved to Charlotte over SIXTY years ago l have to say you missed some of the worst parts of town! The entire Freedom Dr. Area for one! Particularly the Camp Green area. That is within shouting distance of downtown. You mentioned " projects which can still be seen all over town. Charlotte is moving towards the San Francisco model, and has been doing so for decades, starting with the 4th Ward area of downtown. Old neighborhoods torn down by developers who put up fancy expensive neighborhoods to replace them. Old public housing torn down and leveled with nothing to replace them. The poor are being, and have been, run out of town. The homeless are growing in number every day. Like San Francisco the tech industry is growing along with the banking industry. The government of Charlotte is largly to blame for this. They have forgotten to care for those displaced by all that comes from gentrification. I suggest that you take another look at Charlotte and it's surrounding areas, say Gaston county. These are Charlotte's bad neighborhoods. Welcome to Charlotte, the San Francisco of the east coast. Just Saying.

Listen, I'm someone who grew up as a functional minority in my neighborhoods as a white girl moving in and out of some of the iffiest parts of the CA Bay Area in the 90's, ok. You wanna talk about hoods and being genuinely worried about walking out of your door at times, you talk to me. Yet even there, I just learned how to carry myself, be civil with everyone and keep my nose clean and it's pretty much fine. Then my family and I moved to the Charlotte area in 2005 (not right in the city, but Gaston Co, and we'd venture into the city often) and I was shocked in the most positive way that this is actually an amazingly safe and friendly city with comparatively low crime and homeless rates to a lot of other cities of its population! Although just like every cityscape it's gonna have some old run-down poor neighborhoods and of course some unavoidable level of crime, if you're just borderline intelligent enough to keep your head on a swivel as you go about your business and treat those around you with respect instead of acting too anxious or gawking, you'll be just fine. It's not that deep, this is Dealing With Strangers 101. The fact that uppity middle class scaredy cat white people like to roll into areas with people and circumstance they don't understand and make zero attempt to, and boldly and judgmentally treat it like a zoo or a sideshow exhibit is more disgusting than anything you'll actually see there. Just go back home to your plush armchair and watch Fox News and shake your head in your own living room if you're gonna be like that, stfu and leave people alone 🙄😤
Edit: And for added clarity, I have been a full time Door Dasher alllllll over the CharMeck area from Uptown to Myers Park / Montclaire South to University to Northlake to Matthews, and usually from sundown to sunup as temperatures and traffic are low as is competition from other Dashers. So I am very at home in these streets now, and again I say I have never felt truly unsafe at any time. There have been some moments where I felt a tone shift and knew it would be wise to keep moving, keep quiet, and stay calmly alert, but that can happen anywhere. Don't cause or go looking for trouble and there won't be trouble. Simple as that. 🤷‍♀ Ok rant over lol

I used to live off ideal way, near south and East blvd, and there was a crack house on the corner. Not anymore.

Honey you ain't even the worse parts of Charlotte NC! We have one of the worst unemployment systems in USA, we have a screwed up court system that's worse than I've seen from the places I've been! A drug dealer will go to prison for saling drugs for 25 to life, but a rapist or a killer will get 20 years and sat free! You my dear clearly aren't from around here. You're in the okay parts of Charlotte I'm sure there's a bunch of us NC folks that can show people the real bad parts of Charlotte or any other city in NC

I have lived in Charlotte over 20 years. There really isn't a ghetto here. There are some run down neighborhoods and West Charlotte has more crime but it is NOTHING compared to cities anywhere near its size.

Beattie Ford, Sugar Creek, Tuckaseegee, Grier Heights are the most sketch parts of town. If you're looking for trouble in Charlotte, you can find it, but generally we have a "don't start nothing, won't be nothing " attitude.

It's chronological. Used to be, you couldn't talk about the hood, without mentioning Pine Valley. Which was only a small, normal black community, until Crack came 86ish. Best thing about Charlotte was the people. Mostly good racial harmony too. Now it's REALLY international, and the southern accent is disappearing.

He didn't drive through the worst looking spots.. he went through the worst ones for crime over time maybe.. which in charlotte can be the suburbs to be honest you never know here.. Charlotte isn't a bad looking city. Nor is it a real bad city. It has it's spots like all cities. Most people come move here and are shocked by how clean it is. Unlike other decent sized cities that have terrible looking areas Charlotte actually does a great job with keeping the city look clean regardless of where you are for the most part. But like I tell everyone.. don't let a clean street or neighborhood fool you.. think about LA. A lot of neighborhoods there never looked too bad either. Don't be surprised that a clean neighborhood in charlotte is more dangerous than a filthy neighborhood in another city.. You can't base things off of what you see in charlotte, this is just not that type of city.

Traffic sucks. Charlotte wasn't so bad in the 60s and 70s. But pretty well sucks now. Midwood area in the 60s. Could actually play outside after dark with everybody without any problems. Then I lived on hickory grove road when Eastland mall opened and when it was torn down.. working at the airport fighting that traffic daily. I finally left. Hopefully I'll never have to come back. Y'all can have the orange barrel city.

Definitely not the hood. Born as raised in the QC, left for school came back and only being away for 4 years CHARLOTTE LOOKED WAYYYYY DIFFERENT.
One thing you are correct about is the serious gentrification that’s going on…. Small little history lesson about Charlotte……
Bettis Ford use to be a street swarming with black owned businesses.
Now they are putting a Chase bank at the corner of LaSalle and Bettis Ford, then remodeled Dub-C after years of that school pleading for renovations, houses are getting brought and remodeled by a lot of people who would have never even imagined living off of Bettis Ford Road and now there’s a light rail by JCSU….🤔🤔🧐🧐

It's funny how Piedmont Courts was renamed Seigle Point and Earle Village became First Ward. Back in the day those were rough areas especially if you weren't supposed to be there. All of those neighborhoods close to uptown have seen gentrification over the decades and the ghetto has been diluted and spread out in Charlotte. Still some rough areas but money talks loud and clear along with location, location, location.
