I Drove Through The WORST Parts Of Gary, Indiana. This Is What I Saw.

  • This was dangerous. Gary might be the most rundown place I've ever seen.
In this video, I drove north on I-65 from the Lafayette area to the city of Gary, Indiana, one of the worst places you can live in the country. It was a clear day with highs in the mid 50s, and a recent snowfall had already melted. The day was Saturday, December 20, 2019 and it was about 1 in the afternoon.
As I pulled into Gary, it was immediately clear that this rundown city in northwest Indiana would resemble the slum that I had written about in the past, but had not yet seen firsthand. What was surprising, though, was it wasn’t AS bad as I had thought it would be.
Of course, there were some very bad areas, which we’ll see shortly. But the dangerous riff raff which is notorious among all dangerous regions, was still indoors. It’s become clear that in order to avoid confrontations, I must drive these dangerous neighborhoods in the daytime.
After all, a somewhat to do white man with a camera on top of his Jeep doesn’t necessarily blend in.
And the rows and rows of slums that I had seen pictures of are slowly disappearing, as Gary, like other struggling communities, was slowly being turned back to nature.
We’ll begin by driving through downtown Gary, and visit a housing project, and then maneuver through the worst streets I could find, through online searches, forums and by zig zagging throughout the city for a number of hours on this unusually warm winter afternoon.
Before I headed to the projects and then on to the worst parts of Gary, I drove Main Street in downtown Gary, which was grimy and forlorn.
I wanted to head south on Connecticut Street and head towards Gary’s more infamous areas, the Dorie Miller Housing Project. This will be my first stop, but as you’ll see, I didn’t stay long.
Here’s the Dorie Miller Housing Project. Now, I’ve been to some really bad areas before, and I am rarely intimidated, but the vibe I was getting here made it VERY clear that I stood out and it just wasn’t safe for me to be driving through these projects. So I left quickly. Perhaps if i come back, I’ll venture deeper into Dorie Miller’s bowels.
The next stop was an area that online research indicated would be a really rundown area. A slum if you will. That’s the way I went.
I was not disappointed. Not only was this pretty much the worst part of Gary that I witnessed, but like many other ghettos I’ve toured, there was a lot of open space - where homes which once proudly stood had been leveled. There were many open fields or wooded areas which looked even more hopeless with the early winter brown tint. There wasn’t really much of anything in Gary that was green.
Gary’s population was once nearly 180,000. That was in 1960. Like other rust belt cities in the region, it was a restructuring of the steel industry which hit this city hard. Now, the city is a shell of its former self, with a population of 80,000 people. It’s estimated nearly one-third of all houses in this city located just 20 minutes south of Chicago, are unoccupied or abandoned.
Upon a little more research, I came across the dollar lot program, something I hadn’t heard of before. For a buck you can buy a home like this as long as you fix it up and live there for 5 years and have a decent job. Apparently, the program is limited to certain homes, and there’s a waiting list.
Gary is fighting blight in other ways. Besides just straight up knocking down large swaths of homes, some of the larger buildings downtown we saw earlier will one day be turned into ruin gardens. The plan isn’t to just demolish the entire building, but to remove the most fallen down parts of buildings and leave the rest of the buildings there, encouraging gathering points where people can plant gardens, put in benches and tour Gary’s history.
Gary is challenged for sure. While many lament areas like this as democratic strongholds that won’t encourage growth or incentivize the population to take initiative and fend for themselves, there’s been millions set aside to help this mess.
Alliance Steel plans to open a new $35 million facility. HMD Trucking recently announced plans to build a $6 million trucking depot, set to create 500 jobs.
$5 million more in state funds have been set aside to address blight. A plan to revitalize the waterfront areas is in the works, and Gary’s trainyards and direct connection to Chicago are being restored and rebuilt to encourage more tourism to the area.
But we’re a LONG way from that. Can Gary rebound? Perhaps. But it’s going to take more than millions of dollars in band aids. The people who live here are going to have to decide they want change and do the hard work themselves.
At one point I was way too exposed, off in a far corner of town with no help nearby. I almost became trapped in an alley due to the debris and narrow roadways. It was time to leave Gary before I became stranded or approached.

My car broke down and a group of homeless looking people came running out of nowhere and got my car running again in 20 minutes. Went to college in Gary at Indiana University Northwest. I’m female and I look white. I was in Gary for classes, errands, etc sometimes very early, sometimes after dark. Never had any issues. Because my tuition was relatively affordable, like $10k per year, and with the help of scholarships, I was able to finish my undergrad with no debt. This allowed me to afford law school. I’m now a practicing attorney. It’s fair to say I wouldn’t be where I am without Gary, IN.

All the suburbs inter-states were designed inter-colonies possessed by different countries themselves possessed individually, grouped, and together. The suburbs were designed since before our founders were born North/South colonies. It knew the cities would be the way they are. All spots are tactically denatured. We're in a semi-ancient trap. Even in the other countries; it's the same thing. All exceptions are in demonstration of the same thing/s. Our founders left us to explain to the world how the breaching method/s forced us to entertain economies as entertained, too. We could only afford to fix the tactically denatured everywhere with a species body plan. I just looked at a video of Detroit looking just like this. Hartford looks like it. We have to discern how the best/worst spots are landscape theater tactically denatured.

      @Playback007able 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Not exactly. The cyclical nature of the steel business did hurt Gary, but not as much so as the city politics, which were corrupt deamonRAT types. Then the civil unrest of the sixties saw White fright/flight to Merrillville, Indiana, a new city that would have been annexed by Gary before becoming incorporated but was not allowed to do so by the county politics to expand southward of the Gary Southern city limits back in the 50’s/60’s. Basically, Gary grew right up to the Interstate 80 and Interstate 94 and U.S. 30. A physical barrier that kept the city from expanding into the Merrillville, Indiana vicinity, before Merrillville was incorporated by county politics that blocked several attempts. by the Gary city officials to annex this once unincorporated land. Merrillville is where many of the Whites fled to.

Gary has so many assets going for it. The video briefly mentions the steel mill. Lake Michigan is another asset. Lake Michigan in Gary is the location of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as well as the Dunes State Park. Gary is served by 3 interstate highways and Gary is a rail center for the same reason Chicago is. It's possible Gary will recover. Of course, Gary has been failing to recover for decades.

I go here all the time to explore abandoned places with my friends Many of the people here are pretty chill. The locals aren't very hostile (they're actually welcoming in some cases) towards people who obviously don't belong in that town. For instance, I once struck up a conversation with a guy who's brother owned a church right next to an abandoned one I was checking out, and he gave me a tour of the church. I haven't (yet) had a problem with the people there. But if you DO run into the wrong person, it could turn ugly very quickly. A friend of a friend of mine who explored in Gary was robbed at gunpoint in an abandoned theatre. It is a dangerous city, but its not a death sentence to set foot in the town like people think. Go during the daytime and stick to the downtown areas and you should be fine. When we decide to go out at night, we usually run 5 deep at least. Don't go out at night unless you're with at least 5 people who can throw a punch lol. Or just play it safe and don't go out at night!
Next time you're there check out the abandoned methodist church! Its arguably one of the city's most iconic structures!

A bustling town full of hard workers, trucks coming and going, kids running around, school buses going to and fro. Now you can buy what is essentially lakefront property for less than a new car. These industrial towns used to be the backbone of our country, and now that they’re mostly gone, I can see why the United States has become so spineless.

Of mature trees? Of people walking and getting their exercise? I kinda feel like the truck with the camera and the white dude driving randomly pryingly around the neighborhood is the scariest part of the video, to be honest. This town is a victim of an economic wave that came in and quickly out. Nothing more. People are all the same, everywhere. You are too, in your heart, watching this. Let’s all go buy up and rebuild Gary. So many people work from home now. I bet this is already happening and I just have stumbled across it yet. But I’m gonna go get it soon before its too late. I got FOMO like a MOFO. Open land for gardens?? Affordable housing with just a little bit of fixer upper elbow grease?? The Dorrie Miller projects are slated to be torn down soon so won't be able to get back there FYI.
Seems like the city just needs to fully empty out, then a new city will grow there being the location is actually good but the image of the place is still too dangerous for that to happen in the next 10 years.

I grew up in Merrillville south of Gary parents worked in Gary Mom worked for IUN, the old man was a principal in the Gary school system. Gary was busy and thriving until around 1967 when they elected their first black mayor. Once that happened, the white flight out to the south of Gary was intense. Towns like Merrillville, Crown Point, Hobart, Portage and Schererville exploded in popluation and businesses started to make their main headquarters in Merrillville along US30 which became overloaded with traffic. The new mayor even tried to stop the flight by not allowing for sale signs in front yards but that failed. The steel industry was starting to fail in the mid 70's and finding good jobs was becoming harder. I left the area in 1980 and never looked back parents sold their house in Merrillville in 1977 for big bucks as we lived 300 feet off of US30 so they sold the house as a commerical property. They moved 2 counties away to Demotte IN and commuted to Gary until they retired in the mid 90's. There was so much corruption in the local government that never got challenged or taken to trial that lots of money pumped into Gary was basically stolen and not used to encourge new business to locate there.

This is comes off as exploitive. You’re treating Gary and similar places like a zoo. You’re invading people’s home, pointing a camera at it, and posting it for views. It’s upsetting that you’ve done so much research into the “worst parts of Gary” yet didn’t keep share that same enthusiasm for the history or positive lights of the city. (And if you did, you didn’t share it with the viewers)
There is nothing wrong with acknowledging the fact that the city is a shell of its former glory. I appreciate that you mentioned ways that the city is trying to heal. This doesn’t feel like you’re concerned about the health of this city.
    You seem detached from humanity.

Myself and a couple of my friends (all three of us women and the driver was from Hobart) drove around as she told us stories about some buildings, stores, and other stuff, kind of like a tour guide, about 20-25 years ago while we were there to visit her. It still looked about the same then as the present time in your video. We didn't feel threatened in any way and by no means am I saying it isn't safe or is safe to be there. I don't know either way, but we didn't encounter any problems when we were there. No one really paid any mind to us. I did notice that there were mostly men on the sidewalks/streets though and thought where are all the women at lol. The only thing our friend who was driving said to us that was in a concerned tone was how we needed to go because it was going to get dark soon. I asked her to drive around a little bit longer and she said we had to go. I didn't ask any more questions. We left. There were a lot of run-down buildings, boards on windows of some stores and houses, burnt down houses or partially burnt, and graffiti on things. I love the art of graffiti so I really enjoyed looking at it on our visit there. I see a lot of potential there, still!!! PS... we stopped at stop signs and stoplights lol.
