Marty has always been underrated, he's not a "shredder" but since he joined Megadeth people tended to label him a "Metal" guitarist when it was clear in his playing that he was more than your typical Metal guitarist. I think it's great he as a musician made a change, left the metal scene and started branching out and exploring himself musically. To me, that is the definition of being a musician!
I mean, listen to 6:40 - 7:00 so much emotion in the choices of notes, the bending, the vibrato...incredibly emotional playing! His vibrato at 6:46 is so beautiful!

@murilo ninj: WTF that bullshit! Marty was in "Cacophony" b4 Wings of Pegasus...opps meant Jason Becker joined David Lee Roth. That Metal as fuck n was under a METAL only label and he had plenty of metal songs in his 4 solo all instrumental albums b4 he joined Megadeth. He not underrated he just not as famous as other cats. Just like Alex Skolnick(Testament) he is well known too but not as famous as others.

Man I love Marty. He is all about the music. Marty brought his melodic sensibilities to Megadeth and they made their best music with him. Never plays fast fast without it fitting what he's trying to do melodically. He and Dimebag are my favorites in that regard. They can both shred, but thats not what their solos are about.

His ability to create, develop a theme and give it an arc is unparalleled. His playing has gone through a few phases over the years, but he's at his peak.
His inner Brian May is pretty strong here.

Marty does some technique instruction on guitar world's you tube channel. He's a funny guy while being quite serious but he says he has no idea how to sweep or hybrid pick. He says it's boring because once you learn to play fast you have nothing if you can't emote what you're feeling. Great video Fil.

Great choice, Fil especially after the Jason Becker feature. I love the soulful playing here. Mentioned owning Speed Metal Symphony plus Go Off. Was overjoyed when Marty joined Megadeth and loved Rust In Peace. Fave after all this time is his solo for Youthanasia's "Addicted To Chaos". Bought this after of hearing Train Of Consequences on the radio (yep, those were the days) but that other lead is killer. Hell, gave it 3 spins before this comment. Worth a listen.

Just a thought her. Tony Joe White just passed away this last week and he was a really great singer/guitarist noted for a few late 60's hits like Poke Salad Annie. He was much more than that though. Very minimalist electric guitar...mostly pick less. If you haven't done him before I think you'd like him as I know your love for dissecting a guitarists style...especially those who play like it's effortless while pumping out some solid sounds...he also sings and plays harmonica......He's southern and sounds it.

Did I hear "Misty" in the beginning? What you said about playing an arpeggio/sweeping as a block of motion -- to fast to itemize consciously -- may relate to how we read words as blocks of letters, and phrases as blocks of words. We do "read" and "write" music after all, so playing would be analogous to speech, that is, arranging abstract symbols into patterns and then translating them into motion (the motion of the strings, the air, the vocal chords, etc.). Do you know where in the brain music is processed?

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes that's what's interesting about reading music, sometimes it is physically impossible to read and play so fast, so it has to be learned in isolation.

For acoustic - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning or Beeswing

Or the amazing Guitar Heroes his song about being a teenager in the 60s sitting in his bedroom trying to play like his heroes including, Django Reinhart, Les Paul, Chuck Berry, James Burton, and Hank Marvin, with segments where he shows what he learned. There's a version on TH-cam with his trio from "Teatro Nuovo Treviglio 03 10 2015". The video isn't great but the sound good.

Marty Friedman is an amazing guitarist. However, this is the only song I really care for on this album. The high water mark - for me at least - are Marty's solos on Megadeth's "Rust in Peace" which were WAY ahead of everyone else as far as using exotic scales and modes in a metal context. As far as his current album goes, I appreciate the massive amount of technique on display, but the compositions are lacking, in my opinion at least. By contrast, Gretchen Menn's "Abandon All Hope" has incredible compositions, along with super good technique. Definitely check out Gretchen Menn. Thanks for featuring Marty too. While I have some issues with his solo efforts, he's one of the best guitarists around today.

I was so disappointed with "Inferno" not because it was a bad album but because I've been a fan so long. I bought "Dragon's Kiss" new on cassette (I did mention I was old) and that album is incredible. While their was lots of shred on it, like every other guitarists work in the '80s, it was the first album I'd bought that really introduced me to different modes and theoretical ideas. I was a pretty new player at the time and completely self-taught so he opened up a world to me that I didn't know existed. These crazy shred metal songs that would feature a run using African scales and such. Really magical work. In that aspect I found "Inferno" disappointing. I'm sure other players would feel the opposite. Just my two pennies. Brilliant, as always, Fil.

I feel such a fool - I clicked on this as I was intrigued to know what interest Fil would have in Marty Feldman, as I misread it! Perhaps you could do an analysis of Marty Feldman anyway, Fil?

Marty is the greatest at arpeggios.... His friend Jason Becker was also amazing with arpeggios but their technique is noticeably different... Yes Mr Friedman does have an underhand technique but the way he holds single notes will literally make a listener cry... Whereas his friend Jason Becker will make a listener think... Marty is the man,... Technically speaking Steve Vai... Is the greatest guitarist of all time... But that's only from a technical abilities standpoint... Marty Friedman will make you cry with his notes... And I value that much more because music is emotions

An analysis of Focus' "Hocus Pocus" would be interesting.

Marty is incredible. I love all his albums, and specially The Wall of Sound... Could you make a video reaction or review of the latest album from legendary Jason Becker? Triumphant Hearts is a masterpiece. The whole world should listen the greatest guitarist of all times (at least for me). Thanks to consider it. Jason deserves the best

Phil.....I loved your vid on Tony Iommi......although not even close to his best work.....I strongly recomend & would love to hear your take on his live performance of "Lonely is the Word" from the incarnation of Heaven and Hell band at Radio City hall....its about time for some more Iommi diversity. Cheers! P.S. great vid as usual.....

Marty Friedman is Celine Dion of the guitarists. He's just a category of his own. A level above the rest.
