I can't believe how much this match still excites me. I'm getting the same feelings I got when I watched it live as a 17 year old. And it's not just "that try", but the whole match. What a game amateur Rugby was. There will never be anything like it again.
Fantastic try! I counted 27 pairs of hands from the throw in. Keeping the ball alive, not seeking contact, no phases, all the elements of this great team game. Welsh players prominent but Gibson and Duckham made significant contributions, too. World class both of them! I remember going into (Comp) school on the Monday and this match was all we talked about for weeks!
Duckham, Bennett, JPR, Gibson, Dawes, Edwards - imagine how good they would be in the current age with professional training, etc! Watching this reminds me why I wanted to rugby when I was young 👍
What an era they were all amazing the wingers job is to run fast and be in the right place to receive the ball and get it over the line. It's a team game but when you win the ball you need a JPR to get the points.
Controversial, but I actually reckon this try was better than the Gareth Edwards try. For sustained brilliance over one and a half minutes. Wave after wave of passing dummying and backing up of the highest order Duckham was adored by all Welshmen on that never to be forgotten January day at Cardiff in 1973. No wonder with the addition of the peerless Mike Gibson and duckham the,71 lions bamboozled the All Black's. For my money, that' backline was not just the greatest lions backline ever, but the greatest set of backs ever, period. Every single one of them had a touch of magic about them. And on JPR,he was the complete full back, and then some.. Courageous and Lion hearted, with the skill set of the finest centre. What a player,what a man. !!!!!
I think that it a little known fact that JPR once had a lobotomy. The surgeons removed that part of his brain that cotrolled FEAR! Well, its the only reasoning I can come to. What a player, in a team that had some fantastic players; and, that comes from an Englishman!

An interesting thought is, what if he had been born Dafydd Duckham and not David? The Welsh backline would have been even stronger and DD would have got more of the recognition he thoroughly deserved.

I remember seeing this as a youngster from our tiny place in NZ. The skills, flare & change of direction was something we only wanted to emulate on the school grounds.
I was watching this game as a 13 year old when me mam came in and said ‘what are you watching this rubbish for?’ Just then Bennett started that amazing try and when Gareth scored she said ‘ ok then!’. I’ve always maintained that JPR’s try was better and this game made me fall in love with rugby. It was amazing to attend an anniversary lunch at Twickenham a few years ago and meet the legends in person. I’ve met a lot of famous people but I was speechless when I was introduced to Gareth.

what a time that was for legendary players, especially where Wales were concerned...I can still picture my dad standing in front of the old black and white rediffusion telly, screaming and jumping, like he was actually playing in the match. Whenever Wales played and won, he would have a few drinks and play Max Boyce records...Sospan Fach... I think I knew the names of the Wales 15 before I learned the alphabet lol
Beautiful! When you consider the ball was like a slippery lump of lead in comparison to what they play with nowadays. Certainly those high tackles were very dangerous, and there are many players that have lived to realise the consequences. It’s odd that Gareth didn’t get much of a shout in that beautiful uncorriographed piece of mastery, but English and Irish stars shined throughout. As a few people have noted, this try seems to be so much more superior to the other one, due to the interaction and skills of so many more wonderful players. Albeit the game has now developed into set piece procedures with phenomenal defence play, punched through with huge Pacific bulldozers, it is just beautiful to see balance and ball handling skills like that displayed through those men of their time. It would be great to see that be allowed to flourish again, as it is seen in Henry Slade. He has it, but will it be given oxygen to bloom? Wham bam centres are pretty one dimensional. That’s what wing-forwards are for.
This was a wonderful team try. Every Barba was involved. The show boating skills of Gibson and Duckham were so exciting. There was no way that this wasn't going to be a try. Cliff Morgan doesn't know what to say at the end. It was just a great rugby moment.
There are many, including Gareth Edwards, Bill Mclaren, and a host of ABs that played against him that think he's the most complete player the game has ever seen.

That Barbarians side also made up most of the 74 unbeaten lions that toured South Africa.. Bearing in mind they were all amateur, 95% of them would be top internationals today as professionals.. Edwards, Bennett, Slattery, Duckham, JJ Williams, Gerald Davies, Gibson, JPR Williams, Andy Ripley, Tom David, John Pullin, John Dawes and more would easily be more than a match for today's players.. They aren't regarded as some of the greatest players in history for nothing.. JPR was as big as any full back in world rugby today, and quicker than most, also hard as granite, and a tackling monster. David Duckham was a 6ft 2 winger with pace and a sidestep to die for.. JJ Williams was an international sprinter.. Mike Gibson probably the most complete player in history, Gareth Edwards the most complete 9 in History, Fergus Slattery at 7 was years ahead of anyone else in that position.. This team and the 74 lions that they made up the bulk of as well are regarded as the best ever to play the game, and cited by the AB's as the mould from which their playing style evolved into the side they've become.. Please don't make stupid statements without knowing facts..

In an at best average Irish side Gibson played right across the backline and was always a threat.. Difficult to say whether he was a better centre or 10, but I think along with BOD and Danie Gerber the best 3 centres I've ever seen..

I'm not sure what the build up was, but JPR was taking haymakers to the head the whole match; including the two clothes-lines during the run up to "That Try." Anyone know what that's all about?
I think they were just trying to unsettle him.Mind he wouldnt complain and he was more than able to dish it out.He belted South Africans all over the pitch when he was with the Lions in 74.Sometimes in the loose play like having a 9th forward. Sadly in 1978 when his club Bridgend played the touring New Zealanders a prop forward by the name of Ashworth stamped on JPRs head and neck and he had to have a lot of stitches.Oddly Ashworth wasnt sent off!!!
This was perhaps the inception of the idea that the All Blacks were so important to the promotion of international rugby that they had pretty much carte blanche to act as they pleased. Considering their penchant for kicking prone players in the head for a number of years it is almost inconceivable that no All Black was sent off from Colin Meads to Sonny Bill Williams .During this tour Keith Murdoch who was basically a sectionable psychopath kicked and punched his way across the British Isles with effective impunity. Given that kind of latitude it was unsurprising that some of the All Blacks would misbehave , in this game Grant Batty basically spent the whole eighty minutes trying to headhunt the Barbarians players and you have to bear in mind that this was an exhibition match and not a test match. It should also be said that a lot of this touring party were from the old school and were good sportsmen , Ian kirkpatrick the captain was one. Joe karam the all blacks top scorer on the tour was not only a fine player but a great human - he spent much of his life attempting to exonerate convicted murderer David Bain and was ultimately succesful.

Having watched England v Italy at the weekend, the rules of rugby seem to have changed the game into something I don't enjoy anymore. Italy played the more attractive rugby in the second half by far.
I had forgotten about this. Yes comparable wit "the try" but wonder what a modern coach would have made of the risks taken to keep the ball alive. Expect they would have been horrified. They dont make them like this any more alas

Back in the day England were well off the pace. Duck ham was their one great player. But England hardly ever had possession and kicked it away.
I could watch DD all day, what he could have done in an England shirt if only he'd been given the ball more, incredible talent.

Slattery delivered the majority of his passes flying through the air and at an angle of 45 degrees to the playing surface.
For me the greatest flanker I have seen in my lifetime - he had it all, just superb.
