Of course it went forward a million miles at least once. But I'm a Kiwi and, even as a 12-year-old kid watching that, I knew I'd seen something immortal. Still gives me goosebumps and still and forever the greatest try of all time.
@@nicholaswhite3811 The last pass, from Quinnell to Edwards is forward, although fortunately, the ref missed it, and allowed an iconic moment to happen. The ball clearly leaves Quinnell's hand in a forward direction, and no talk about "momentum rule" can hide that.
On the 27th January next year it’s 50 years since this game, I wish they would show the whole game on tv as a memorial to the players and the magnificent 7, i Remember watching the game that day, a very exciting afternoon’s entertaining
@@raytreherne26 Yes, it is on dvd, and I’ll play it when I need cheering up. The downside is that the picture is rather grainy now. I agree with you Sam. Surely the Golden Anniversary would be a great time to remaster the original coverage so that we could watch it on TV in HD.
It is know throughout the Rugby World as "That Try". The great man Cliff Morgan with his magical commentary, he was a late stand-in for Bill McLaren who had been unwell. "Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering. Chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant! Oh, that's brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams. Pullin. John Dawes, great dummy. To David, Tom David, the half-way line! Brilliant by Quinnell! This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start! What a score! Oh, that fellow Edwards!" […] If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story, no one would have believed it. That really was something. Their numbers are becoming fewer with the passing years but they will be remember by Rugby fans everywhere for "That Try".
I was an undergraduate at Camridge, and watched it in the TV room in my college. It was absolutely packed, and I thought that the roof was going to blow off.
Cuando vi esa jugada de niño, se me aceleró el corazón y los pelos de mis brazos se erizaron.En ese momento supe que tenia que ser jugador de rugby, y así ha sido. Thanks for magnificent seven. Que subidón cada vez que veo estas imágenes.
I was in our local (Limavady) rugby club, having played for my (Limavady Grammar) school team back in Northern Ireland. It was packed to the door and the pints we're flowing. We'd won our early morning game and the club had narrowly lost to one of the top Ulster clubs - Antrim, if I'm not mistaken - at that time, but everyone was focused on the game. I'll never forget it.
Veiwed this many, many times. Watched it live as a young lad. A few observations: - On the longer video, you can hear two Welsh 8 year kids throwing their opinions around. Then one of them giving John Pullin the gears before the line out. Hilarious stuff. - Edwards was facing the wrong way half way through the play. - Close your eyes and listen to it again. Every time one of the players makes a spectacular play, the cheering just gets louder and louder.
Morgan wasn't supposed to do the game. Bill McLaren was ill that day. Fitting then that a Welsh commentator should have the call of 6 Welshmen, and an Englishman, in Cardiff for a piece of all around sports greatness.
You’ve got to feel sorry for Bill McLaren, not being the commentator for that try! In reality, it was the whole match that was fantastic. And the all Blacks played their part.
It would have been an injustice for UK rugby greats like JPR, Gibson, Bennett, Edwards, Davies, McBride etc, not to have been on a winning team against the ABs on UK soil as they did for the Barbarians in 1973. Their own home nation teams came close in the 70s to beating them so this Barbarian victory is special.
There were no forward passes. Having read postings by idiots claiming there were forward passes, I have watched clips of this passage of play over 100 times. There are no forward passes. Every pass went backwards. Those who think there was a forward pass just have to accept they are wrong and apologise for their stupidity.
30-odd players committed to playing running rugby. I salute the Barbarians for their style of play, but I also salute the All-Blacks, for also playing that way on the day.
If the greatest writer of the written word would have wrote it no one would have believed it , take a bow and how can anyone write anything about that try, the greatest try ever scored as don’t forget the opposing team All blacks 😖 a time we will never see again as this was a time when we had honest people in this world and would at least share the wealth around not like these bunch of shite which lie and cheat at every corner. I wasn’t at the match but I WAS THERE watching on my tv 🙏🙏🙏 benny jpr gareth and the rest I salute you all 🙏🙏🙏
the greateest try ever; i recall watching the game and within seconds i was running out of the front room into the kitchen screaming to my mother she had just missed seeing the greatest try scored.
Ha, ha. Alas, these days that would be brought back to the 22 for the high tackle on JPR (playing advantage from then on) as a result of the forward pass from Quinnell. But, given the refereeing and lack of technology at the time a great try none the less.
Hey you Poms firstly the Barbarians threw out their stated existence of bringing up young potential players into a game. You put up a British Lions in disguise. We were at the end of an arduous tour. CONGRATULATIONS 🎊
So New Zealand didn't select their best team then? I can see no argument for either team not selecting the best team available. The Barbarians always have at least one uncapped player. Tom David, in this case.
The greatest rugby match of all time. That night it was the talk of the WMC where I went. "JJ Williams-JPR Williams-Bennett-Pullin-Edwards " Bill McClaren voice put the cherry on top of the icing on the cake that day!
I take it your apology is because the pass you refer to was not forward. There is absolutely no doubt that there were no forward passes in this passage of play.
A Welsh Icon ...Thank you J.P.R . For everything .....All of my best sporting memories from an iconic Welsh era ...All my prayers for the family ...
JPR Williams finest man to ever play the game!
As a Saffa, I have to agree. That Barbarian team was loaded with some of the best players who ever lived.
And as tough as old boots! RIP JPR!🙏
Very brave player. Two high tackles against. With him in your changing room you knew you had a chance x

Classic stuff
It was a beautiful moment in rugby time. Both sides had agreed to play running rugby and it was a great match with fantastic tries on both sides.

50 years today, and it still resonates as the greatest try of all time among rugby fans!
See some Simon Geoghan tries
Still goosebumps after all these years...

Hear hear. Especially with the sad news yesterday of David Dukham's passing.
The game is available on DVD. I bought it years ago, but it would be great to watch in pub with some lads.
NZ would be ashamed to see that wimpy Haka.

I was lucky enough to be there that day, with my Dad. Just watching this video has made me smile so much my face hurts.
We should ask Peter Jackson (They Shall Not Grow Old, Get Back) to revive the tv footage!

Good God, I remember watching this live at the age of 13 with my Welsh grandfather and his mates. The shouting and applause was so loud...!!!
I was an undergraduate at Camridge, and watched it in the TV room in my college. It was absolutely packed, and I thought that the roof was going to blow off.
I remember watching it live with my relative in our front room, it truly was an incredible game.
I remember watching it live as well with my Dad I think it was live on " Grandstand "

the sheer passion of gareth edwards even in describing the try .
This try gets more poignant as time goes by - RIP JPR

One of the favourite sports moments of my life, and the reason i started playing rugby. Great players, great men. All amateurs too in those days.
The greatest try ever scored. ❤❤❤🇬🇧
What a score! (lol, dear old Cliff -- put him on the stage 🙂)

One high tackle and about 3 forward passes! That would go the th third ref for about 20 minutes these days. BRING BACK THOSE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There were no forward passes.

Not a rugby fan but this still gives me goosebumps.I did see it live and still remember the players.
Wigan Rugby league through and through ,saw this back in the day and yes i get it, that was special
The game is so much more exciting now with the rolling maul HA HA. Thanks Billy.

Sublime. When Wales had world class players through out! And they didn't get paid and had jobs.
'King rocket!
Those were the days my friend!
Golden
Wonderful play, but from the perspective of the video, it seemed that the last pass may have been forward ? Perhaps it only seemed that way ? 😊
You need to get your eyes tested - (smile).
Sshhhhh!
There were no forward passes in this passage of play.
The GREATS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL GAME🇿🇦✊
It could be one of them - we have seen so many now!
Brilliance
Brilliant
Where is John BEVAN who scored in this famous match then

i was at that match
Disgraceful not showing John Bevans try

those high tackles tho bro
"Accidental" high tackles and kicking opposing players in the head are the 2 things I remember most from the All Blacks of that era.
Tommy David was uncapped.

As the game should be played! The Black Ferns have brought back this classic open style of attack and we saw that in the World Cup!
Which World Cup ?
Given he said the Black Ferns I'd reckon it was the women's rugby union World Cup he was on about.

@@robinburns9380 Cliff Morgan was the commentator actually. :-)
I stand corrected!@@Petyeo1
Jpr failed his exams at st marys time after time but they kept him on as they kept winning rugby cup.
Pulled the odd one in
Derek's pass looked forward but a great try
It wasn't forward.
They dont make them.like that anymore
One of the greatest moments of any sport. These 7 are immortal and this try will be shown for the rest of time...
Once in a 200 year thing, from New Zealand ha ha ha ha!!!!
The “ bunker” would have looked back at that and ruled a forward pas . Get rid of the bunker .
The TMO might have looked but would have seen that there were clearly no forward passes in this passage of play.
That last pass was forward I’m sorry to say
It's Barbarian rugby.Who cares !! Best try ever !!
