This was the start of the great surge of Welsh rugby on the world. The 70’s were the finest era of the men in red, it was a great pleasure to watch them in that spectacular run they had. And as max boyce used to say, “ I was there”, in front of my tv, but I was there. By the way , I’m an Englishman who was so envious of their skills and passion
2:00 What a try by "that fellow" Edwards. Two beautifully judged kicks-ahead while running forward at full steam (and even while glancing left and right) shows it was no fluke.
It was a helluva try. Broke our hearts that day in Scotland at that point, I think, as the Scots never looked like coming back after that try. My elder brother, now sadly departed, was a decent scrum-half and once represented Edinburgh at schoolboy level. Gareth Edwards was his idol, literally, he made an effigy of Edwards out of plasticine and put it on the mantle piece so that he could pray to it! The Welsh sides of the seventies were indeed a wonder to behold. As for that Edwards try, well, as Scots we can only admire it. It had everything, pace, strength, awareness, beautifully controlled kicks, bravery and tenacity. An iconic try, up there with the very best, such as the one he scored for the Barbarians against the All Blacks (although for this one he did it all by himself). What a player, will we ever see his likes again? Well, we can but pray. Now, where is that modelling clay?
The picture of Edwards shortly after landing the try is one of Welsh rugby's greatest images. www.wru.wales/2020/08/finalist-2-mud-and-glory-for-edwards-1972/
I agree. To me, you can discount that Barbarians try,and replace it with his second try in this match. I have lost count in the number of times I have watched this replay, and every time I say to myself He isn,t going to make it.Let me also say, being from the north of England, I am predominantly a Rugby League fan!
Today, with 5 points for a try, the score would have been 40-13. This was the first season of 4 points for a try, previously a miserly 3. The 2nd season in a row that Wales won all their 5 nations matches, but the championship was not completed- the Ireland v Wales game cancelled.
@hamulomu To your point, you could actually argue that being 6'5'' was more essential for second rowers at a time when the line outs were closer together and didn't use the huge supported jumps you see today.
The most remarkable thing of all, we still don't know if the crowd coming onto the pitch to congratulate John Taylor on his try, weren't actually congratulating him for his conversion the year before!
Fans on the pitch after each try; line out jumpers get no height on their jump; no medics on to treat Gareth Edwards after he almost got his neck snapped in the try - just a photographer getting in his face. Ahh the good old days!
15 years old and dead in line for THAT try on the East Terrace . . . then on the West for the Baa Baas one a year later. Pretty good luck for a Swansea City football season ticket holder. And the tickets cost less than 3rd Division football. Different times. Great rugby, rubbish toilets!
One man in the commentary box unlike the 4 or 5 you have today. But when it`s Bill, he`s all you need.

Always beaten by SA and NZ in the 70s.
The myth of the Welsh being good at rugby needs to be exposed.

Edwards could have been a world class fly half too. His running and kicking game was superb.

What a privilege it was to watch this match and be entranced by the rugby and BM’s commentary.
Gareth Edwards - A genius at work.
a MAGNIFICENT display. 🙂👍
cette équipe me faisait réver quand j étais gamin ... marvellous
I was at the game, but the fun was later in the pubs! The Welsh are champion drinkers!
Watching this in 21 to remember real Rugby and remind myself what freedom used to look like.
Gareth Edwards is greatest rugby player the world has ever seen!

I would agree with that .
Self delusion is common in Wales guess that’s why the sing songs down the coal mines echo echo

Arise, Sir Gareth!
You mean Prince Gareth. The real Prince of Wales.
@@taffyarthursoutdoors The half-back pairing of King Barry and Prince Gareth. Rugger royalty!
@@alfredjohnson2647 if Barry was the King, then surely Gareth must be the Emperor.
@@philldavies7940 According to that great Welsh supporter Max Boyce "...they broke the mould, of solid gold, that once made Barry John!".
Wonderful.
Love the fans just running on and off the pitch
The offloading is brilliant .
When rugby was played by human-sized human beings. Today's rugby is basically a freak show.
I completely agree with you
@@ilpasserosolitario1 them days 6ft was tall for a second row.
And all the worse for it too
Also the days when you could see wingers acting as 'emergency hookers' too.

Morris and Taylor wonderful wing forwards
Gotta love the commentary 👌
Barry John and Gareth Edwards - has there ever been a better half-back pairing?
Barry John didn't even touch the ball in this video
Gerald Davies what a player.
The game of THAT try!
The most remarkable thing of all, we still don't know if the crowd coming onto the pitch to congratulate John Taylor on his try, weren't actually congratulating him for his conversion the year before!
Edwards...scorer of the best team try ever and the best individual try ever. Peerless.
By damn that fella had some talent
Edwards...best try of 1972 and best try of 1973.
What can stop a man like that …….
If the greatest writer of the written word could write that story, they would not believe it ………
That fellow Edwards!
Great try by Edwards .
Wow look how Welsh and Scottish everyone was back then
Gareth Edwards was clearly concussed after scoring his try.
wales!
John Taylor. A flanker with the skills of a back
My dad played against him at a sevens tournament. He always said that John Taylor was years ahead of his time.
Clark's the only try Wales conceded in that 5 nations

Not forgetting throw-ins were taken by the wingers!
1st game of rugby i watched in color ?
If I had realised that this video was courtesy of the WRUination I wouldn't have watched it. But seeing that I have here's a "Up Yours!" WRUination!
fukin trol
gazza best player ever
Ah, REAL rugby.
Oh yes

Est-ce que le KING jouait ?
Gareth Edwards- Le Roi d`au pays de Galles !
The king : barry john...yes sir ! 15 points.
Danny Wilson? Dad Ryan Giggs?
No - he only played for Wales in the 80s and it was League not union
Where's the on-screen score? At least show the score after every score!
Abject Scotland performance.
I hate the WRU
