    Todos somos extraños. Todos estamos luchando por aprender unos de otros. Si conoces a tantas personas a las que les resulta extraño tu acento, debes demostrarles cuánto te esfuerzas e intentas aprender a comunicarte con ellos.
    Entonces, no eres tú quien es extraño. Pero su actitud muestra una falta de aprecio y comprensión. Usted no es el que necesita cambiar, está trabajando duro y merece muchos elogios. Yo mismo estudio "Español" e "Inglés", y sé muy poco todavía, pero no me importan ni me preocupan comentarios como ese.
    Mi idioma es portugués-brasileño y sigo estudiando portugués, porque nadie lo sabe todo. Estudio cuatro idiomas. Y si un dia
    alguien viene a burlarse de mí, no hablo su idioma correctamente, le preguntaré si sabe todo tu idioma, cuántos idiomas hablas y si sabes algo del mío. Vaya, estoy luchando por aprender su idioma.
    Felicitaciones a ti por intentarlo.
    Soy Dorgival Dantas Brito, 49 años, Músico, Cantante y Compositor, Brasileño. Vivo en São Paulo.
    ==========================
    We are all strangers. We are all struggling to learn from each other. If you know so many people who find your accent strange, you need to show them how hard you are trying and trying to learn to communicate with them.
    So, it is not you who is strange. But their attitude shows a lack of appreciation and understanding. You are not the one who needs to change - you are working hard and deserve much praise. I study "Español" and "Inglés" myself, and I know very little yet, but I don't care or worry about comments like that.
    My Languages is Portuguese-Brazil, and I continue to study Portuguese, because, nobody knows everything. I study four languages. And if, one day,
    someone comes to make fun of me, I don't speak their language correctly, I will ask if he or she knows all of your language, how many languages do you speak and if you know anything about mine? Why, I'm struggling to learn her language.
    Congratulations to you that you are trying.

    It is a reduced relative clause. 'A useful analogy is the mind which is like the sky' can be reduced to ' a useful analogy is the mind being like the sky'. For example, 'another example is a man who is like a superhero' can be reduced to 'another example is a man being like a superhero'.

    'BEING' is not a noun here. It's a Present Participle (adjective) modifying the noun 'mind'. 'Be of something' here means 'comes from something' or 'belongs to something'... so I would rephrase it as: a useful analogy comes from the mind which (that) is like the sky.

    I had a slightly different way to take it before your explanation. I see the phrase "an useful analogy is of [the mind being like the sky]" as a sort of metonymy by reduction (I just googled, it's called synecdoche, the use of a part for the whole): what would make this a metonymy is the fact that the only way to produce an analogy is by means of thinking, so the act of thinking can be implied and become redundant. Hence the whole sentence would be "an useful analogy is THINKING of [the mind being like the sky]", and in turn, since we now have the verb, it's clear that the object is the name of an action (or the non copulative verb "to be") to be compared among alike things.
    Following the same line, I believe a step further should be valid, once already known we're talking of the mind: "an useful analogy is of the sky", since this is another valid metonymy: the only way to make an analogy is to compare two objects that must be alike, so by mentioning just one object the second must be the one being discussed (the mind), and since there's no action, it'd imply we're talking of either an already discussed action (not the case) or the fact of just being alike.

      Actually, IMO, since the only way to make an analogy is by means of a thinking process, the redundant way to put it would be "an useful analogy is TO THINK OF the mind being like the sky", the "of" here assume it is implied we're talking of thinking and the byproduct of the thinking process by which you make the purposed comparison between the mind and the sky.

    Source of the confusion: "A useful analogy is of the mind".
    How about rearranging the last part of the sentence a little like-"A useful analogy of the mind is being like the sky," instead of "A useful analogy is of the mind being like the sky".

    • @peterbutter2054
      @peterbutter2054 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grammatically, both are correct. If I hadn't seen that original sentence, I would say a useful analogy of the mind is being like the sky. However, they carry different meanings. "A useful analogy of the mind is being like the sky" emphases the analogy. But "a useful analogy is of the mind being like the sky" emphases the mind. The analogy can't be like sky, but the mind can, right?

    Thanks Christian. Is it correct : “AND A USEFUL...” ?? It should be: “AND AN USEFUL...”. In that phrase sounds rare “IS OF”, I wouldn’t use OF.
