  • Tim Burton's take on what already seemed like a Tim Burton film! What could go wrong? Doug gives his take on the live action remake Dumbo.
    Dumbo is a 2019 American fantasy adventure film directed by Tim Burton, with a screenplay by Ehren Kruger. The film is a live-action reimagining of Walt Disney's 1941 animated film of the same name, which was based on the novel by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. The film stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin, Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins.

      @trinaq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree, normally I don't want to be too harsh on child performers, as they're still young, and have plenty of time to develop their acting chops. But the two main child actors sounded so flat and uninterested when giving their lines most of the time. I don't know if that was an issue with the writing, or the way Burton directed them. Plus, the girl, Nico Parker, is Thandie Newton's daughter, a fact which surprised me when I went to look them up. 😊

      When i was watching this film with family over Thanksgiving weekend, aside from the kids' acting being wooden and bland, I kept asking "Why did there even need to be two kids? The girl got most of the screen time and was far more involved in the story than the boy."

    I don't even have that emotional attachment to The Lion King that everyone else from my generation has (that film for me is Aladdin) but just....the original was great, had something to PROVE no one believed in it, it looks STUNNING on a CHEAP budget of 45 million, and it took THREE YEARS to make that wildebeest scene where the entire remake took just two and....if any remake felt like a cash grab...The Lion King 2019 is that film. @123leyang321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What I really hate is how they completely butchered the "Baby Mine" scene.
    In the original, Dumbo had been away from his mother for longer than in the remake, and he was really depressed, so the rat took him to see his mom, giving us a better context for how much he misses his mom. His mom is also chained and can't really make it to the window in her cage, so she has to use only her trunk to feel her son's face, she can't even look at him and he can't see her face either, which makes the scene much more heartbreaking. The way the mom rocks Dumbo and is the one actually singing the song, as if it was a lullaby, along with the clips of the other moms with their babies sleeping really gives us that motherly, nurturing vibe.
    In the remake, Dumbo was separated from his mom for a couple hours, then the mermaid lady sings the song and Dumbo's mom gives him a pat in the head. That's pretty much it. The super brief face caress she did there that lasted for a few seconds? That is ALL there is in their interaction in the remake.

    My opinion when it comes to remakes/reboots in general: give me a ‘reason’ to see this new one over the original. Like just to compare: Willy wonka vs Charlie & the chocolate factory. The 2nd one adds new characters, has a different flow with the last act, & brings a different atmosphere, it’s ‘different enough’ from the 1st. With the animated lion king vs the live action, yah they make similar updates but as a whole it’s the same movie shot in a different style. Like with White Christmas in black&white vs in color, the update may be a novelty enough to see it once but there’s not enough differences between the 2 to make me favor one over the other

    I recently finally saw this movie and I walked away feeling very similarly to Doug. I didn’t necessarily like it but there were elements I liked. I wanted the kids to shut up because their acting was atrocious but I liked that Dumbo flying became the center of the entire movie and not the last 10-15 minute retcon. I liked that the animals still didn’t talk and that the circus people all had a sympathetic love for Dumbo, particularly the snake charmer, and I didn’t mind Eva Green - but I’m also a big fan of Eva Green and her willingness to do most anything in a performance - and the I thought the circus environment was nice. But I thought Dumbo looked kind of off and I thought some of the plot didn’t make sense - I too almost shouted at my TV that it made more sense to let Mrs. Jumbo be with Dumbo and not sell her off literally for the purpose of killing her. I’m glad I saw it but I think I’m in the same boat as Doug: original’s better, this one at least did something a little different and I don’t need to see it again.

    The original Dumbo is one of my favorite Disney animated classics ever and I still enjoy watching it. This new Dumbo isn't as great as the original, but for me it's good in its own way. Among all the criticized live action remakes this is one I enjoyed the most, mostly because it's a mix between remake and sequel and especially for the ending both Dumbo and Mama Jumbo deserved. I liked both the remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King (Doug is gonna destroy the last one, I already know that: amen), but Dumbo remains my favorite 2019 Disney remake and probably my 3rd favorite Disney remake of the 2010s behind Cinderella (2015) and my absolute favorite The Jungle Book (2016).

It was something new and refreshing ,not the average remake! Now I can see people hating it if they loved the original,but for me the remake outshined the original! Now this is going to make people angry,but the animated one for me is lazy, dull, and boring! You have to be in the mood to watch it! It’s just not that good! The live action is its own story and I love that! The animated Dumbo was just not very memorable and probably close to Disneys worst animated film!
