Am American. Don’t think I’ve ever used cap. If I hear it, I of course know what it means, but I use hat. From New York and spent most of my life in Virginia. How about a swimming cap???

When it is a component of an uniform, typically in the context of sporting, I call it a "cap", while it is a "hat" to me when it is a fashion item. Since early 1980's sporting gears have been integral part of fashion, which may be the reason why Christian's parents tend to call particular types of hat a "cap", while younger generations do not care the difference.

The MLB merchandise online shop has a selection button as “cap” but when you open the “cap” page, each description says like Men's Los Angeles Angels New Era Red 60th Anniversary Authentic Collection On-Field 59FIFTY Fitted “Hat”. Another one. Michael Nesmith of the Monkees wore a green wool beanie in Hollywood in 1966 but that was called a wool-hat. Now I’m confused. LOL （日本人です。）
Usually the older baseball caps had a longer bill than the ones today, which are shorter. The movie sandlot, shows the difference between the two different styles.

In Japan, it is called "Sun Visor", and the word "Visor" is never used by itself.

個人的な感覚だと動画にあるように、ツバが前しかないのかcapで全体がhatかな。水泳帽だけ水泳capだけど。
私が学生だった時は、お二人がかぶってるのは両方capで、全体的につばがあるのは、hatと教えられました。
脱帽するってアメリカでも日本と同じ意味のことわざがあるみたいですけど、あれってアメリカとかイギリスから入ってきたことわざなんですかね？
昔の日本人は、帽子かぶってる人なんていなさそうだし。

The “directo’s cap” you mentioned is called ハンチング (hunting) in Japan.

お二人が、かぶっているのはbaseballcapだと思いますよ。でも、言わないんですね。interesting!
ベロと舌みたいなもんなのかな？
確かに私の周りの人も多分全員ごっちゃにしてますが、どちらも hat という人が大半ですね。因みにニット帽も私の周りでは hat と呼んでるはずで、かぶる者は全部 hat って感じ。辞書的に見ても cap は定義が狭くなるので、結局みんな簡単な語を使う傾向にあるのではないかと思います。。
