In the mid 1990’s Honda made a six wheeled Kei Truck (it’s pronounced “Kay” BTW), they called it the Acty Crawler, Google it. It even came with a set of tank treads like the ones you have on your skid steer. They are rare, not many units made. I love Kei trucks and vans, I’ve lived in Tokyo since 1990. Cheers Stu.
Literally saw a fb post this morning with a photo of that 6 wheeled Honda, apparently only 10 of em exist in the world - this one was for sale configured as a tracked firetruck kei truck from the photo I saw of it
You guys are nuts.... I LOVE it!! I was born and raised in Idaho although a good way south of you in the little town of Cambridge about 30 miles north of Weiser on hwy 95. I live in Ohio now and dream of a day I can come back to the mountains. I miss it all so much and you guys make it all come to life for an old dude (62). We still own a cabin about 38 miles north of McCall on the Warren Wagon Road. I used to tear up the back roads and trails there on my dirt bike. We used to rip into campgrounds at all hours do a couple of donuts and rip back out before anyone could come out and catch us. I was around 15 then and if someone did that where I was camping now I'd be pissed!
I used to drive those things all the time in Japan (it's "Kay" truck by the way) and I always fantasized about buying one stateside and putting it on Toyota running gear with a 3RZ. This is gonna be even more sick!
Kei Truck [sounds like, Kay, or K or ケイ] it means light. I've driven these for years here in Japan. The cars and vans that are in this class are also fun to drive. They are coming out with EV versions too, the Postal Service is already using them. Maybe in the near future you can have an EV 6x6 K-Truck to go along side your Tesla. Looking forward to the build.
Those lil imports are so much fun because of their gearing. They geared them super low in 1st/2nd. My lil 4wd toyota tercel is similar with an EL gear. It may only put out 55HP but it can do a lot with it. Like Edwin said, the smiles per gallon is super high. Great build.
Always amazed at what you guys come up with. Thank you for sticking to the cool projects and ideas -> one of the best TH-cam channels/personalities out there.
...Can't wait to see how this project turns out. I've been looking for a Kei truck for quite a while. My ultimate Kei truck would be a Subaru Sanbar body dropped on top a Samurai or Tracker frame. The Sanbar is the only Kei truck with a separate body/frame construction. All the other Kei's are unibody. A cab forward, micro rock crawler that can actually be fast enough for limited highway use is what I'd ultimately be shooting for...
Looking forward to this build as I have a custom Kai truck. Once you dig into it you’ll be impressed how they’re designed. For example, the engine is positioned exactly in the center of the truck. Awesome 4x4s. Hope you guys do something cool with it! 👍🏼👍🏼
I like this idea better than the version I was building for a customer. We had a HiJet that I was building into a mini Dakar truck. Unfortunately it was totaled in a Hit n run so now I'll live vicariously through you guys.
Between 1994-1996 Honda built to order a six wheel Acty Crawler. It was 4x4 and had rubber tank tracks on the back 4 tires. 660cc engine manual transmission. It was used as a fire truck, at ski resorts, and a few were privately owned. A bloke down the street still has one in great condition.
While I was in high school and college I spent my summers working in the family orchard and we had one of these JDM Kei trucks. A little baby blue Honda ACTY to be specific. I always looked forward to any days where we had to go cut down trees or ferry oil out to the pumps because it meant I got to go bombing around in that little thing. They don't look like it but they are crazy fun to drive, and surprisingly capable. We used to use ours to chain up and drag out trees and broken down tractors all the time. We were always revving the nuts off that thing and beating on it but it just kept chugging like a good honda. I keep looking for one in my area but they must be sought after now because everyone always wants too much money.
Tracks on back if you get tired of it being a 6x6. Put a small cage on leftover mini Mitsubishi chassis for friends to thrash around on(with a turbo for fun sounds if not a few more ponies).
EPIC project!! Love this. Oh and those plug sandblasters are great but make sure to blow the plug out really good after! Mine always have sand stuck in the crevices.
So Wise , Thank You . As a point of trivia I have always been indecently proud of the fact that I drove the First production Ranger 6x6 off the line and into the truck . As a Polaris built in Roseau , it would be hard to find a better platform. I also drove the very first production 6x6 off the line and into the truck . The fastest I ever saw on a Sportsman 6x6 speedometer was 47 mph. Thank you for saving another fine machine
Excited to see how this project turns out! Heads up on that Ranger. Those chassis really depend on the roll cage for rigidity. The section your feet are on is where they will bend or flex. Can't wait to see the build!
honda made a 6x6 kei truck! also designed to use with tracks!! its a acty crawler if i remember correctly. im so pumped for this one. best of both worlds the speed and agility of the ranger and the closed cab and big bed of the worlds best trucks. id love to see a kei truck with a tdi diesel motor.. maybe oneday
Awesome project. You guys should find a turbo engine out of turbo S or xp turbo and put that in it. Go from 55hp to 180hp. Can’t wait to see what the mad scientist comes up with!
Yes sir this is awesome haha. I've been looking at kei trucks since the mill I work at is only like five miles away from home... hard to find in nh but still your videos never disappoint 🤘 keep em coming
I see em all over NH, Keep lookin brother :) Check out carfromjapan, they can get you a kei truck into port for as little as 2 grand all-in. Get an old enough one and it'll be street legal too. Up to you to transport it from one of their ports though. Could be as close as maine or baltimore though, IIRC.
Can’t tell you how excited I am for this project. I’ve been wanting a mini truck for a little while so the timing of this video is perfect. Let’s goo!!
Awesome video!!!! This is like the best of both worlds. I've been very interested in the Chinese and Japanese trucks. I'd really like one of the beds off one of those and narrow it for a trailer behind the four wheeler. This is going to be a cool build.
You said that the mini truck did well in the snow. I remember a story about Ford's Model T. Nearly none of them were able to get stuck. The reason for this is they don't have large tires. You would believe that wider tires with an aggressive tread patern would do better, except those small tires are key to that truck not getting stuck.
If you were to catch the sun shine at just the right angle for a epic photo of the 6x6 sitting stuck in that snow bank you didn't quite make it over at the beginning of the video, with the front end hanging out of the snow drift while the rear four wheels are still stuck, would be that picture in the dictionary next to the meaning of the word "Grindhard".
