I know a lot of people are associating this sound to Jamiroquai, but this is acid jazz, which predates that group. Two earlier examples would be The Brand New Heavies and Incognito. There are others as well.
I do not really know why, but every time I hear Paak start thinking about Prince
For all intents and purposes, Jamiroquai was the most successful acid jazz group, and would have been a more visible reference for The Free Nationals growing up. And it still influences their music to this day.

Great voice and unexpected drum greatness
He's just all around one of the most talented people out there and he has such a limited discography despite being at this for a very long time. You can see the "I made it" aura on him with every live performance/recording. He genuinely seems excited to be where he's at.

@@notmebutyou8350 That’s Kelsey. He is incredible. In the documentary for the Free Nationals, Kelsey tells how he came to a dive bar to hear the group play and went up to them after and said, “you need a bass player!” He was invited to the band and the rest is history.
