    Didn't Harry Potter hire IM Silman to create the chess puzzle in order to believably sacrifice the knight for mate? (And then proceed to not only mangle his analysis on screen by making inappropriate cuts and fail to show it in a comprehensible way, but also fail to give him credit)

    4:24 Danny's wrong here. There is another row of squares that we almost can't see, and if you count the squares from top to bottom, you'll only count 7. So they didn't get it wrong here.

    • @jono5744
      @jono5744 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also, the board is built in to the table so they can't turn the board "wrong". Sure, they can film from the wrong angle but they didn't do that here because we saw the position and where the guy was sitting before the close up.

      Apart from the dubious idea that the villain only brought the game to an early checkmate to get to a S.P.E.C.T.R.E. meeting, the set has the table centred on a chessboard style carpeted floor that is actually 9 x 9!

    Another fun fact about the position at 16:20 is that there was actually a second way to deliver checkmate. Ron could have played Bc5+ Qxc5 Nh3# but Harry was the dark squared bishop in this game so Ron decided to sacrifice himself (the Knight) instead of Harry

    IMO the more annoying with films is that Hollywood dramatizes it like mate in 1 is always lurking behind some brilliant unseeable move, you have players that are supposed to be exceptional talents blundering mates in 1 constantly and before rubbing their eyes. I mean, blundering mate in 1 is something even a below average player would very rarely do, especially in slow chess.
    (I brought up in a reply but in Sherlock Moriarty is so good at chess they can play without looking at the board reciting moves to each other but he fails to see a forced mate after Sherlock sacs his Queen and even goes as far as gloating about his superior position.)

    • @iwanabana

      Magnus blundered mate in 4 after sitting there for 5 minutes, so...

    • @lagerbaer
      @lagerbaer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well tbf in blindfold chess / not seeing the board it's at least a tad more likely to blunder something.
      But yeah, lazy directors use chess to show someone's supposed intellectual superiority by delivering a surprise mate in 1 and it's just bad.

    • @ngoclongle7004
      @ngoclongle7004 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well most ppl who watch Hollywood films aren't avid chess players either, it is certainly more correct if the losing player resigns the game before getting mated, but it is more anti-climactic for the general audience.

    4:26 The black square isn’t on the right. If you look, you can see that below the black square we see there is another white square. That’s not the bottom of the board. We can however see the top of the board. Though we can’t explicitly see the top right corner, we can trace the diagonal to find out that there is a black square in the top right which is where it should be. The board is oriented correctly.

I wonder about the live chess game on Patrick McGoohan's "The Prisoner", The chess board in "Ace Ventura" where all the pieces are there and suddenly disappear, the positions on the old sci-fi "First Spaceship On Venus", the several positions in John Wayne's "McLintock", a few scenes on "Lost In Space", the game at the beginning of "From Russia With Love", and there are a few positions on the "Columbo" series.

    In a series adaptation of Sherlock Holmes called "Elementary" there is a scene in one episode where Sherlock plays a quick game against a friend of his and (at least according to their dialogue) begins the game with the Ponziani Opening.
    In an episode of Malcolm in the Middle, Malcolm plays chess against this one guy trash talking him and the Nimzowitsch Defense was mentioned.

    Cool. I hope you review the scenes involving Kronsteen in From Russia with Love. There is also an entire episode in the old Mission: Impossible tv show called A Game of Chess (s2 ep17) where Jim Phelps must play and beat the U.S. champion in a chess tournament.

    • @Socialdogma
      @Socialdogma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mission: Impossible episode could be a review show by itself. It featured:
      (1) Phelps was noted as being pretty good chess player in college and he has like 2-3 days to study up on the game to be able to beat the best chess player in the U.S.
      (2) The team uses some sort of univac style computer to feed Phelps moves to outplay the chess champions.
      (3) There is one game where the chess champion loses in like 7 or 8 moves.
      I’ve seen all the old series episodes. Sometimes when Phelps is in his bachelor pad at the start of the show and just before he picks his IMF team from the photo shoots, he is pondering a chess move over the board. Obviously, this means he is a genius.

    At 4:30 or so x men one out at the chess park...Danny, he's pushing a pawn....a word looking pawn... There's a white square on the right... It's hard to see, because his hand is covering it... When the camera is coming up to the board, you can see the diagonally opposite corner to that right corner it's also a white square. I! think it's good

    For part 2 I hope for a mention Guy Ritchie's Revolver mention.
    I don't know if their chess positions are 100% correct but they explain a lot of game theory and philosophy that is not just relevant to chess alone - it's actually being applied from the games of GMs to the games of chess engines themselves to pretty much everything in life... A great movie!

    Bart actually has a chance to win one game in this simultaneous match. The trick is to play as white on one board and black on the other, and repeat the opponent's moves on the other board (so the experienced players are actually playing each other).

    you can see carpet takes genie's queen with his/her queen, putting the king in check...? the top of the pieces are slightly different, even the bottoms are different, the king is rounded, while the queen has sharper edges, the queen also has a little rounding in the top of the crown, they are about the same height (kings and queens are the tallest pieces) you can clearly see the queen has a skinny neck and slowly getting larger at the bottom, whereas the king has like a belly
