    As a violinist, cellist, bassist, flutist, singer and on and on, these talented cats impress the heck out of me. Tight compound rhthyms, equally tight, fascinating melodic and harmonic twists. GG's music never wears out. Superb musical artists.

    I was 14 when that concert aired - and I saw it there and then. Usually, the "ZDF Sonntagskonzert" only aired classical music, which I just can't get my head around. But that day, the on-cam host said, "And now one of the besta bands in rock!" I was like, "ROCK? HELL YEAH!" "Gentle Giant!" What? Total blank. Never heard of them. I listened and was converted instantly and became a lifelong GG fan - and of course, prog rock. If I only got to keep one DVD, it would be this one. The most influential concert of my whole life.

    • @Shaikoten
      @Shaikoten  8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      So, although John Weathers looks pretty much exactly like the Gentle Giant from the album covers, he didn't join the band until several albums in, well after they toned down their use of the Giant in their promo. Although they did bring the Giant back in a big way for their less than stellar "Giant For a Day" LP where you could cut a paper mask of the Giant out of the front of the album jacket. Mine, thankfully, remains intact.

      Difficult changes of key sound "out of key" to whomever expects fewer or simpler changes of key. And even once one accepts them, it's easy to feel lost and not feel what being "tuned" is supposed to sound like. I also suspect that this feeling about Gentle Giant may have to do with "temperaments", which are slight variations in tuning that can sound out of tune if your ear expects a different set of slight variations.

      @@associar6379 Yes, Zappa mentioned them in interviews around this time as a really good band who deserved more attention. As a bandleader with high standards he woould have known...
      GG were not completely a cult act in the seventies - they toured extensively, even headlining at large halls across Europe and the US, and produced roughly one studio album per year all through the decade - but they never broke through to really wide audiences the way Yes, Supertramp, Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull or Roxy Music were able to do. Definitely a less "hooky" band than those...

      Any expression of ones self or of anything through the medium of sound is music. No matter how bad or good it may be. This is fantastic creativity at work here. I gravitate towards progressive rock style bands because they explore their sounds a lot more, and I can identify best with that. Music in the pop industry, at least right now, tends to be more mathematical and safe. I don't like it very much at all, in fact, I can't tell you the name of 3 pop songs and their artists in the last 10 years, but in essence, it is still music.

    • @juancpgo
      @juancpgo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CrankyHankyPanky The word “music” is like the word “art”. Every type of organized sound (or even random sometimes) would be considered music. But for those who really love music, they care about originality. Then they usually elevate their definition of music to something more authentic and deep. It's very hard to judge what is original or not, but it's easy to judge what moves us. I think that should always be the main thing. However, we see someone like Dylan: good music, good approach, full of real feeling. But then you hear Woody Guthrie and realize that Dylan was not really original. The thing is: usually people don't want something different. They want something that sounds like what they've heard before.

    In 2000, when I had been writing music reviews for about 20 years, following a stint as a radio disc jockey for 5, I wrote a Century in Rock piece in which I picked the Beatles as the most important band of the 1900s. Gentle Giant was my #2. To this day I can't think of another band working in a climate so stagnant that tried and accomplished so much. Punk did wonders in breaking down walls that needed to come down, but Giant built structures that have yet to be equaled. Hail to Glory's Way!

    I always thought that John Weathers must be the most psychologically "stable" humans ever to be the drummer in a band with these guys. Every once in a while I park GG in the back of my active consciousness . . . . . but when I pull them back to the fore-front, holy freakin' crap!!! Always on my top 5 list.

    If underrated is the oppose of mainstream, then I agree with you. Also, GG's following 40 years after the fact is proof enough (for me) that Quality captivates. Creativity though (as angie4josh rightfully points out) must be nurtured, with music taught at schools, yeah, but from an earlier age, on father's lap, being encouraged to describe what "is happening" in pieces playing on the stereo... It is called culture, and cultural heritage. America and Europe live in different tempos, priorities.

    Gentle Giant is an awesome group,-(prog rock is definitely an acquired taste) you have to appreciate true musicianship to truly "get" GG.The singer fits the style of this band perfectly.One of the best bands to ever come out of England(along with Caravan,Camel,Genesis,ELP & Soft Machine) -to name just a few.English bands didnt have to fit the mold of pop songs and structure to be considered good,amazingly talented cats here my friends!!!
