Yes, insanely tight and funky! These guys were truly musicians' musicians, no wonder Frank Zappa lauded them as a very interesting band around this time (ca 1975).
What an unusual yet totally catchy song. As a violinist, cellist, bassist, flutist, singer and on and on, these talented cats impress the heck out of me. Tight compound rhthyms, equally tight, fascinating melodic and harmonic twists. GG's music never wears out. Superb musical artists.
Putting the slow zoom in on Weathers at exactly 2:29 must be one of the greatest artistic decisions by anyone ever, on any medium. Props to the Dutch TV people.
I was 14 when that concert aired - and I saw it there and then. Usually, the "ZDF Sonntagskonzert" only aired classical music, which I just can't get my head around. But that day, the on-cam host said, "And now one of the besta bands in rock!" I was like, "ROCK? HELL YEAH!" "Gentle Giant!" What? Total blank. Never heard of them. I listened and was converted instantly and became a lifelong GG fan - and of course, prog rock. If I only got to keep one DVD, it would be this one. The most influential concert of my whole life.
I have been there since they started. I have seen them play live. They are magnificent. Legendary, like King Crimson or early Genesis and Yes, Van Der Graf Generator. Etc
Saw them twice in the 1970s. Never seen anything like this again. Musical perfection, great compositions. Today's computer musicians could learn a lot from GG. ... and in "Proclamation" they are only playing on 4 instruments and only 3 of the band members are singing.
this is what i like about Gentle Giant, they had soul and put lots of emotion into their music, there's lots of prog rock bands who get all technical but sound kinda stale and lifeless
Just WOW. What a performance. Dig this because it sounds just like the album cut, which was probably done in a single take....no overdubs needed...these guys are so absolutely tight like the Big Band musicians of old.
So, although John Weathers looks pretty much exactly like the Gentle Giant from the album covers, he didn't join the band until several albums in, well after they toned down their use of the Giant in their promo. Although they did bring the Giant back in a big way for their less than stellar "Giant For a Day" LP where you could cut a paper mask of the Giant out of the front of the album jacket. Mine, thankfully, remains intact.
I saw this band twice in my lifetime in little small venues and while they're even better live, you can't even believe it ,at one time throughout the concert they're all playing the drums, they're all playing guitar at one time I mean it they're just unbelievable musicians ,you can't believe how great they are,in concert. .

Difficult changes of key sound "out of key" to whomever expects fewer or simpler changes of key. I also suspect that this feeling about Gentle Giant may have to do with "temperaments", which are slight variations in tuning that can sound out of tune if your ear expects a different set of slight variations.

The drummer is in the vibe!
Travis Scott Did not bring me here, but a lot of people will because of his new album Utopia that sampled The studio version of this
The fast part here is even better than the studio version. Those polyrhythm guitar lines are so sexy.
3:16 This part sounds like an avant-garde version of Yes.
Olga Nesterowicz The magic of Prog-Rock for you.

UTOPIA
Hahaha, Pugwash on drums. Hooray John Weathers.
John P Weathers my man !!!!!
They were near the top of all progressive bands, never sounding pretentious to me, always inventive on the earliest albums. Their music really holds up well nearing 40 years hence.
HOTTTTTTTTT!!!!!! Best Progressive Rock....so amazingly ancient and progressively classic!!!!!

The audience must have been listening to this song without headphones
Love this. So much.
