You could drop this as a modern prog metal song and no one would be wiser. The influences from this are so evident in bands like Haken it’s almost laughable. Just amazing it holds up so well.

This is a fantastic track. A testament to the quality of the band is the fact that the live versions are better than the album version. The fan made lockdown version is wonderful too. Great band, great fans. Win, win, winedy win. While I am at it, and being a fan of drums, Pugwash has to be placed with the best of British drummers. Top class.
I have been meditating on the meaning of this song for 40 years. Each time I get a little closer to what has meaning for me. First off, it is a proclamation of a Kings entrance, and uses irony as the door. Once irony is opened, it's meaning becomes clearer. It is I/WE who has the choice whether we can change or stay the same, it matters not to times fickle nature. We are that which pays fealty, not nations, but you who are my people, which each moment I can select. Extraordinary. It is a litotes.
Hail should give you a clue. Clearly it was a warning about totalitarian dictatorship . Sig heil being the Nazi form of salute. The 70's were only 30 years removed from the era of Hitler , Stalin, Mussolini , Tojo .So I think they were reminding us of how bad it could get again. Pol Pot was killing over a million people in Cambodia around the time this song was written.
Gentle Giant could play everything in every form structure logic or wtf, while remaining AT LEAST interesting from first to last note. I loved Genesis, and even more Gabriel alone, Jethro Tull, Yes, the canterbury odd prog by guys like Hatfield & the North, or Fred Frith's big family, but Gentle Giant are always one step beyond.
Found Gentle Giant on Spotify a few months ago, this album blasted up to my top five favorite. A lot of songs by Gentle Giant are EXACTLY what I’m looking for, makes me wonder if there are other relatively obscure bands I’m missing out on.

I did not know about the Elephant Man before listening, so I had no idea what they were talking about and the frequent shifts in the song were confusing. Now I get it, but it took a while since there's four different 'voices' in the song, a circus presenter, the crowd, a neutral narrator, and the Elephant Man.
I saw GG when they first toured with Black Sabbath - one of the audience threw an M-80 on the stage, and when it exploded, Ray said some words that I can't post on TH-cam, and GG walked out. The bass player for Black Sabbath was sick, and they never took the stage. I can't remember the artist who did - a one hit song type of guy. Then I saw GG at a concert in San Bernardino, Calif. They WERE the headliners that time. It was amazing.
Travis was obviously very inspired by kanye. this is very reminiscent of the song kanye sampled on his song dark fantasy which also opened the album “can we get much higher”
You're not listening to enough prog rock of the classic 70s era then. There are TONS of overlap between both prog and jazz fusion at the time, more than you probably ever aware of. Listen to "Dance with the Moonlit Knight" by Genesis, the extended instrumental section is basically a tribute to another contemporary jazz fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra, as evident with Phil Collins' attempt at emulating the drumming style of Billy Cobham there.

Travis's producer horribly mangled the vocal passage, this song is timeless. What a way to waste a sample, would've been sick if Travis wrote a strong acapella verse instead with lyrics using similar themes. He has a strong voice just like Derek here, would've been epic
