You can’t beat those old guns Jerry. I used my Devilbiss that I bought in the 70’s on a few projects this past summer and it still sprays like new. Great video
Thanks Jim - I had a Buffalo Pneumatic JGA copy - it was a heck of a gun - sprayed excellent. Bought it out of one of those trunk salesmen that came around the shop every now and then.
Used to paint cars back in the 70's. Still have my Devilbiss. Sprayed great back then. Used it a few years ago. Still the same. Going to give my old 72 Demon some new paint this spring. Bought her new in 72. Still looks & runs good. Can't beat the old stuff from the 70's !!!!
Thanks for sharing those memories - good times!! Nothing will ever beat the70's and 80's - Great music, cars, movies, etc. The American dream was alive and well. Merry Christmas my friend 👍👍🎄🎄😊😊
I like conventional spray guns because you can set them down and they’re not top heavy when you’re holding them. I tend to use gravity fed ones for small jobs because the disposable paint cups makes clean up really fast but when I have a big project or a project I really care about I’m busting out my Binks Thor Model 7 that was made in 1937. I’ve never seen anything lay down paint as smooth as it does. I have a couple spray guns and I’d gladly give them up before I ever let go of that Binks.
In the 80's I used to spray Centari single stage acrylic enamel with a Binks 7 or a Devilbiss JGA. Both laid that stuff down really nice and wet. Good times!! Merry Christmas my friend - thanks for your stories - love to hear 'em. 👍🎄🎄😊
I picked up a Thor Model #7 (made by Binks) at a swap meet 30 years ago. After the development of the internet, I was able to research the Thor brand. It seems that when Binks first introduced the #7 they used the "Thor" name. Binks sold the Thor#7 from approx 1927-1935. My old swap meet, siphon feed gun is well over 90 years old and does a couple complete paint jobs per year and countless smaller projects.
I used to use conventional gun. But changed to modern guns. After seeing this I think I will revisit the old gun. Thanks for the video. Have a great week. Merry Christmas.
I always got quality jobs out of my binks #7 ( copy) ,also devilbiss mbc .years ago i switched to gravity feed guns . It took some getting used to ,but that's all i use at the latest. Im retired now after 25 - 30 years as a painter - i had enough . Let someone else get the headaches.!
I did my apprenticeship under an "old skool" car builder, fabricator, paint and body guy and he had built many show cars with a stick welder and Devilbiss siphon gun. Thanks for the video and Merry Christmas 🎄
I only had the opportunity to use Marson and Sharpe siphon guns. The cups always distorted at the top and leaked when tilted too much. I taped a paper shop towel around the cup to catch any leaks. The places I worked would never buy top end spray equipment like Binks or Devilibiss.
That was common - dripping from the cup - had to make sure the gasket was clean but it was hard to keep up with the cleaning. The old rag around the cup worked well.
Awesome Jerry....you prove its not the tool in your hand but the person behind it... And you did it very well!.. Merry Christmas and have a great New year! 🎆🌲
I bought a detail gravity gun to spray some small parts, was Not Impressed, had a lot of orange peel. The gun itself and the cup was very hard to clean, spent 45 minutes cleaning it. Used my Bink's #7 the same day to spray a bigger project. Wow paint looked Perfect, took 10 minnutes to clean spray gun and Binks solvent saver cup. Binks #7 for topcoat, Thor #7 for primer.
@@dand3975 According to a comment above the Binks and Thor are the same gun. Binks started out selling under the Thor name in the late 1920’s and early 30’s. If he is correct you have a nice antique gun in the Thor. 🤷🏻♂️
@PhillipHall01 I bought the Thor #7 - 30 years ago at a swap meet, I used a Bink's number 7 repair kit to get it working correctly, I lube the packings every time after I clean the spray gun. Had no idea it was that old , I guess you could say it came over on the Mayflour.
Damn that MBC I bought new for around $200 back in the ‘80s. I also got the old Binks #7 I had given to me. Still have both. Teach these whippersnappers brother. The only advantage I see with a gravity feed gun is you get ALL the material out of the cup, and these days with expensive material that’s a plus. The good old days when you can leave primer in the gun
Back in 90's I was painting Terra-Gators for a fertilizer plant. My go to gun was a Sharpe conventional with a 2.2 tip. Shot primer, enamel, and even bc/cc with it (flow turned way down). Loved it because of the flow the paint had as well as cup size. Still have it today. Just a pain to clean up.
I've painted thousands of RV's and boats with a Binks #7. I still have one I like to use for high build primer. It took me awhile to get used to HVLP gravity feed guns. Merry Christmas Jerry
i REALLY enjoyed this blast from the spray gun past!; Thirty years ago I had 3 Binks No.7 guns, one from primer and one for sealer / top coat. If you kept them clean after every use they would last forever, and continue to do a great job. I still have a Binks but haven't put it back to work yet. I might have to get it back out and give it a go. Thanks for reminding us that old school isn't always mean a lack of performance and quality!
Yes siphon gun can spray upside down, thats why i ilke it. May i ask, can i use a 0.8mm nozzle for siphon spray gun with pressure pot? would it spray better?
I think the efficiency thing is not that true. Like furnaces or new windows. It's just not that true. Keep you Binks if you like it. I can't tell a bit of difference in terms of paint saved. A lot of guys keep the fan wide open anyway and waste half the paint. If a painter is good, they themselves will save way more paint than a gun. Just my thoughts though... keep your Binks 👍😊
The original color was caravelle blue but I picked cruise night blue metallic from TCP Global. I'm going to drive this thing like a daily driver - not trying to sell or save it for anyone so .... I like this blue a lot - sort of like a sonic blue or something. Merry 🎄🎄🎄🎄

Hi Jerry! Yes, i think i have at least 8 diffrent big guns, and 3 touchup guns. Some conv, some gravity feed, but for me, my devilbiss has always been my fav which was from the early 80s, '81 i think. And i know i have a sharpe but the fan is atleast 12" at max, so im guessing maybe for semi's? I have run both through my pressure pot and you can spray some pretty thick paint with one. Only thing i hate with the pot is replacing and flushing the hoses, one for air and the other for the material. Have a great xmas to you and your family, all the best in 2025 :)
The placement of cup doesn’t determine conventional or HVLP. The cap determines the type of pattern. Example I have a DeVebiss GPI with conventional cap (gravity fed) for base. GTI Prolite with a LVLP (gravity fed) cap for clear. They sell new siphon guns with a HVLP caps.
