    THE ART OF PERSUASION
    Nothing feels better than winning an argument. Luckily, Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle gifted us with what is referred to as the rhetorical triangle- three rhetorical tools which act as the basis of nearly any good argument. If you’re looking to persuade an audience, look no further. We walk through what goes into a good piece of persuasion.
    ETHOS
    Ethos focuses on establishing the credibility of the speaker or writer. This is achieved by presenting yourself as knowledgeable, trustworthy, and ethical. Credibility can be built through experience and expertise- for example, a doctor speaking about the benefits of a particular medication uses their medical background to enhance their credibility. Without ethos, arguments may lack authority and fail to convince an audience of the speaker's trustworthiness.
    PATHOS
    Pathos aims to evoke an emotional response from the audience. By appealing to emotions such as fear, anger, or joy, speakers can deeply connect with their listeners. Advertisements often use pathos by showing heartwarming scenes to evoke empathy and persuade viewers to buy a product. Pathos is incredibly powerful: it taps into human values and desires, influencing decision-making through emotional engagement.
    LOGS
    Logos refers to appealing to the audience's sense of reason and logic. This is typically done through presenting logical arguments, facts, and evidence. Think of scientific papers, which rely heavily on logos to support their claims with data and experiments. Without logical reasoning, arguments can appear weak or unsubstantiated, failing to convince an audience grounded in rationality.
    THREE PERSUASIVE APPEALS
    Ethos, pathos, and logos are essential to persuasive communication, each serving distinct purposes in influencing an audience. Effective communicators often blend these strategies to create compelling arguments that resonate intellectually and emotionally.
    Understanding and mastering these techniques can enhance one's ability to persuade and convey ideas effectively in various contexts, from filmmaking to writing and advertising. By leveraging ethos, pathos, and logos appropriately, communicators can craft messages that not only inform but also inspire and persuade audiences to take action or adopt a particular viewpoint.

      Such graphic anti-smoking ads have been around for a very long time as well as such things as drivers safety films showing mangled corpses. Scare tactics do not work in the long run. People are going to justify and do what they want. Not everyone who smokes is going to get cancer. Not everyone who drives crazy is going to get mangled. Not everyone who drinks is going to be a hopeless alcoholic. Not everyone who uses drugs is going to be an addict... etc.... In fact, why not even extend this into race stereotypes? The logic does not follow.

      @@patrickmurray9359 Can you not be pedantic, please? Boil down the essence of authority to its base fundamentals and it comes down to who is speaking and why you should you care. The same applies to pathos and logos. Evoking emotions relies heavily on various paralinguistic or visual features, which essentially comes down to how one’s thesis is conveyed. I don’t really need to explain how what one says really is the base point for logos. It might not be esoteric enough for your taste but their interpretation works

  • @christoffer886
    @christoffer886 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The triangle is good for persuasion or manipulation. However, it should never be used when the purpose is truth as Ethos and Pathos basically are the “appeal to authority” and “appeal to emotion” fallacy. An argument for truth should supercharge Logos and listeners should supercharge their ability of interpretation in order to accurately evaluate the quality of Logos presented. As an example, people should be aware that a low quality democracy values Ethos and Pathos more than Logos, while a higher quality democracy values Logos more. The world usually moves in historical shifts, tides between the two sides. In times with a lot of turmoil the emphasis is on false Ethos and strong Pathos, while times of growth favors Logos. The best equation for society as a whole is honest Ethos and strong Logos. Pathos should rather be applied to consequence analysis rather than persuasion.

It's been so long I forget all the details, but I do remember after that moment paying closer attention and realizing every scene with him up until the police encounter undermined his character in one way or another. It's like the writer secretly hated him and wanted to get that out while masking it with fun-loving vibes as if they expect their audience to be morons and only pick up on the vibes and not realize what is actually taking place on screen

      @@StudioBinder I feel like the only redeeming qualities Ryan Coogler gave Oscar was his chemistry with the other characters or merely his vibes but take a step back and the actual facts he presented around him was undermining of his character. It made me feel like the only reason to root for the character is if you like his personality or just that he was being played by Michael B Jordan and that made me as an audience member feel stupid to go along with, which also offended me knowing the real Oscar didn't deserve that disservice

      Ethos is credibility. If the speaker is knowledgeable, likable, and trust worthy, they have a better chance of persuading you over someone without those qualities saying the same thing.
