This weeks Toy Tuesday looks at the cars from the TV shows The Saint and The Return of The Saint, made by Corgi Toys in the sixties and late seventies. Based on the books written by Leslie Charteris in the 1920

More played the saint in the original series from 1962 to 1969, most episodes were in black and white, but as with all iconic TV shows the cars they drive in them are as much the star, originally requesting an E Type Jaguar for the show, jaguar refused which was a big mistake, as the show was a massive hit in the Uk and America ! So Volvo jumped in and saved the day with the Volvo P1800 which I have to day is the prettiest Volvo I’ve ever seen ! it was also a big hit as a toy too, being in production from 1965 to 1972 !
For the Return Of The Saint jaguar stumped up the epic XJS which I think had a v12 engine and had struggling sales due to the petrol crisis of the time, so it made good sense to put the car in the show. Now I don’t remember much of the return of the saint other than the opening titles the fantastic looking XJS and of course the corgi toy, in my head the show was a big hit, but reading up on it now it was a bit of a flop ! In fact the corgi toy lasted longer in production than the show did, and so the jaguar XJS became an icon !
