I forgot to mention that with reverse gear selected the shaft should be spinning the opposite direction of the way you are spinning it, this one spins in the same direction as you turn it in reverse indicating it is not functioning properly.
Great video thanks brother. Great information. I believe you are right on the reverse burnouts. Sounds pretty good looks like you have done some cleaning up under the hood. I will be waiting for more of the build. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
Nice vid bro! Oh, by the way, finally got the new garage put up on the 13th! 488 days from the tree destroying it last April 11th of LAST year!!! Loooong story man...
@East Bay Hounds Car Club Thanks man, sounds like garbage now though right? LoL And yeah this is the first one with a 5 speed I've ever seen and still the only one with a 5 speed I've seen in person. I have a feeling I have something semi-rare on my hands but I'm not foolish enough to assume it's worth a ton of cash. It's a real shame reverse is out of the original trans because no trans. shop around here will mess with the thing but it's probably better to just replace it with something tougher anyway. As for driving it I took it for a test drive after I got it running a few years ago and it started making a bunch of bad rattling noises. I assumed it was clutch parts flying around in the bellhousing but as you can see from the vid it turned out to be trans. guts. It sat for a few years until I built up the confidence and energy to pull the trans. out the other day hoping I could find an easily correctible issue preventing reverse from engaging but instead I found all those shards of reverse gear when I opened it up LoL. Since making this vid I've put the trans. back in temporarily so it can limp around and it sounds ok again. I have some interesting plans for pepping up this notoriously underpowered 260 with little or no cash and I'm really eager to put them into action while I'm waiting on a good deal on a Mustang T5 but I also don't wanna blow up what's left of my semi functional transmission while 1/8th mile testing performance upgrades for a channel vid so we'll see what happens.
@@eastbayhounds7604 The gains should be pretty substantial, especially for the cost. I'm planning to advance the stock retarded broomstick cam a few degrees with a 70 dollar Cloyes adjustable timing set, lock the distributors mechanical advance at full advance with JBweld, port and tune the carb and block the heat risers off in the intake to keep it cool. Topping it all off with a used T5, good clutch kit and a deep rear gear should make a peppy little package for cheap. What's funny is the water pump just started leaking the other day so the front of the motor is gonna have to come apart anyway. I recently read that retarding the stock cam was one of the ways they lowered emissions output and octane requirements on smog era V8's and advancing their stock cam can give substantial performance gains. It is supposed to increase cylinder pressure, sometimes even enough that it can change an engines octane requirements and that should be a big help with this 260's wheezy 7.85 to 1 compression ratio.
A had a friend whose dad had a 442 and idk if it's the same transmission or not but I remember in like a 2 year period that thing chewed up 3 transmissions. To be fair, it was a really fucking haggard 442 and he didn't exactly take great care of it but that thing was fun when it ran good. Edit: I'm pretty sure the 442 had a 4spd in it. It was a long time ago and I was a kid. It might have been a similar transmission though.
@This is Largemouth Yeah as far as I know the four speed was the only manual available for the 442. This 5 speed is a pretty rare option but I'm pretty sure they only put it behind the 260 V8.
@Efurd Garage That's what I thought at first but like I said in the vid the build sheet says this 5 speed was factory. I haven't seen another one in person either, just pics on the net. Thanks for watching!
@@EfurdGarage I didn't know at first either, I simply wouldn't believe it was stock If I didn't have the build sheet. It's a local car though, looks like some doctor bought it new and optioned it out the way he wanted it with bucket seats, manual windows, manual locks, AC, Rallye gauge cluster like a Monte Carlo, a small V8 and a 5 speed. It's a rare bird indeed, too bad rare and valuable aren't the same thing though LoL.
@Dave Maggot Yeah a lot of times a car with no balls (a perfect example being this puny 260 V8) won't do a burnout in any gear but reverse as reverse is always the lowest gear and it seems this weak little transmission just couldn't handle it. All is not lost though, the bellhousing adapter plate that will let me bolt up a junkyard 90's Mustang transmission is only about 200 bucks with shipping so I could likely put another good 5 speed in this car for less than 500 bucks if I play my cards right. After that I have a couple cheap tricks up my sleeve that should help light a fire under this lazy little 260's ass by correcting a couple of massive performance restrictions that were tuned into the motor by the factory to improve mileage and emissions. It's rated at 105 HP stock, I'm hoping I can get it to about 200 HP without spending much-if anything at all on performance engine parts. Then it'll at least be able to KEEP UP with the 4 cylinder ricers LoL.

@Scott Pearson TOOLS &MORE Thanks man, I have some plans for how to pep up this lazy little 260 for cheap so it should be an interesting journey.
Great video. Will save someone lots of money. I love the old Clutlass'!!
@Camaro Time Thanks man! If things go well this car will be making many more appearances on this channel in the future.

Very interesting video...always learning something new...car sounds good...
Good information on checking a manual transmission.
@Ouzo Lou Garage Thanks for watching!
What are your favorite manual transmissions for Chevy and Ford V8s?
Thanks for posting this.
Great tip! May need to use that soon!

What if it doesn’t go to any gear while out of the car
