  • A new wave of electric family cars from China has been on the cards for some time now, and finally we are starting to see them. we've already seen, and praised, the MG ZS EV, and last year it was the turn of the ORA Funky Cat. But this one is quite significant as it comes from a manufacturer whose core business has been battery and electronic technology. Welcome to the UK, BYD. It's first car is aimed directly at the new darling of the family car sector, the compact SUV/crossover. But does this new brand to the UK deserve your attention over more established cars such as MG, Hyundai and Kia? The only way to fond out was to subject it to the full AutoEV road test and deliver our verdict.....despite the weather!
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Thanks for your review. We just ordered one in sunny Australia (dig dig). Love the funky and refreshing interior. We are getting the top spec one and it is $51k Australian (£28900) so very happy with that. Basically line ball pricing with same spec MG ZS EV but honestly it makes the latter feel like an old car!
Get over this fascination for one pedal driving as it is unnecessarily uncomfortable for passengers. We drove a Tesla model Y with one pedal and is over-rated. The Atto3 top spec is 2/3rd the price of the base model Y so a bargain.
    Keep up the good work.

Comparing a Model Y to an Atto 3? They are two totally different segments. One pedal driving is definitely not overrated. If it's tough on your passengers you're not doing it properly. Does take a litlle getting used to (accelerator control).

One pedal driving kinda overrated, yes. Especially for people who do not had one. I have on my leaf, I tried 1 day live without it. Its not like disaster, easy adapt. 😁
Yes you can easy live without, but oh boy, what a pleasure and relaxation do not use breaks. Feeling like some small stress got away next day.
I would compare idk-like without gloves in winter-its ok, more control with fingers, gloves overrated. But so warm and nice with gloves, heh.
Or... like ICE car lovers-old fashion Nokia phone is perfect, some people still buying it... but I prefer touchscreen smartphone. With that thought in my mind I moved on and ordered BYD Atto 3 this week. Handling my Leaf back, bye good memories of obsolete past and thanks.

We've driven 10,000 kms in 6 months in Western Australia. Absolutely love it. We average 14.8kw/100km which equates to 410 km (250 mile) per charge in freeway and A road use (very little around town so more range is possible).
N.B. the Australian and Kiwi cars still have 480 kms range shown on driver's screen (not the 420 km WLTP figure that BYD claim). This is the (very enthusiastic) Chinese market claim. I hope when they convert to miles for UK they list 260 miles and not 300. The 480 km figure confuses most motoring journalists in OZ who mark it down for not achieving the 480 km shown. BYD really need to do an OTA to remove this confusion.

It's been in Australia since about Sept last year. I like it particularly the red colour. For the equipment it provides plus it can tow 750kg(braked/unbraked) plus take a 50kg roofbox, at least the AU model can would assume same for UK/EU. The interior is love it or hate it, I am indifferent but like it overall. The battery of course being LFP is one of if not the safest on the road today plus can charge to 100% and should charge to 100% at least once a week unlike NMC chemistry. Your AC/DC charging rates are higher which is disappointing as here in Australia is max 7kW AC and about 90kW DC.

Good review, but you really should have done your homework before driving & recording. This is just due to you probably not having enough time with the car.
As Bryan mentioned in the comments, everything can be controlled by voice command.
All heater and air conditioning controls can be done by telling it what you want. You don’t have to dig into the screen for anything while driving. Even the radio can be fully controlled by voice.
The cars here in Australia are very soft riding and quiet, so I’m not sure what tyres and suspension set up they have in the UK.
As for the interior not being your cup of tea, that’s understandable as we have been flogged with black or charcoal interiors for 30 years.
Young family people will just love it.
The full kit of safety is quite outstanding when it comes to value for money.

@@AutoEV I forgot to mention that it seems the Atto 3 is priced right up there in the UK. Which makes it a big gulp moment to buy compared to other already established brands as you correctly mentioned.
Here in Oz it’s priced very well at $51,000.00 (£28,000.00) on road for the extended battery version.
Plus we get $3000.00 (£1,650.00) rebate from the government, plus we don’t have to pay the usual government rip off of what we call stamp duty (3% of the full on road purchase price which works out the be another £1,650.00) so the price is even more attractive.
To be fair all new BEV’s here in Australia will get the same discounts and rebates as we did with the BYD.
All of our cars are of the same exact spec except for battery size.
This along with the very outdated MGZS EV make it the cheapest EV in our market, so it’s quite attractive for people wanting to do the jump from ICE to BEV.
We collected ours yesterday after 6 months of study by me (an engineer at Volvo) and for the money, the safety, the features, the value, and the drive ability nothing comes close.
No, I’m not defending my purchase, but I’m explaining why I purchased it. Lengthy study and road testing of all of its competitors clearly show this here in Oz to be the best value, and bang for buck. Yes, the bonus is it is screwed together extremely well.
We are both in our mid 60’s and it was the interior that first attracted us to the car. It’s about time for some quirkinesses in our car lives 😊

The interior in the photos didn't really do it for me. But once I sat in it for a few hours it definitely grew on me. In Australia, we don't have many EV options for under $50k AUD. Only one is the MG ZS EV. I'm taking mine for delivery in a few weeks time.

    • @aussieideasman8498
      @aussieideasman8498 ปีที่แล้ว

They say mine is coming in a few weeks from now. Biggest reason over the ZS is that 100 km (60 mile) longer range, but there are more factors that went missing in the road test. For instance, that blade battery can charge to 100% without added degradation past 80%, and it degrades years slower than MGs do. On top of that, it is far safer to charge in the home. The menus might be awkward, but all you need to do is speak to it. For instance, the rotate screen has three ways; one on the screen; one on the steering wheel; and voice command. While the regen is weak, the actual battery recharge works off the braking automatically, which no other EV does. It has some flaws, but the overall package is brilliant.

Hoping that as the MG 4 new formats are developed that sunroof comes back, this will make the MG 4 have a lighter inside compartment. Do like the one pedal driving on my Leaf also. Good review as always (if a bit repetitive and a little too long, sorry, but I had finished my lunch before you finished the review 😅). I would take issue with your level of forgiveness with the controls hidden withing the infotainment screen. Yes it's very common these days, but it is unforgiveable because it is simply not safe. There's a chap who used to promote keeping eyes on the road after he reached for some polo mints in a coat pocket on the passenger seat, crashed the car and suffered serious injuries. That's why we have stricter laws about using a mobile phone whilst driving and hiding the aircon controls in the infotainment screen is at least as bad. Your effort to clear the windows was an excellent example of how distracted your eyes were. 🤨 We all need to campaign to change this trend urgently. I'll get my coat........

Same price for a bigger battery, more equipment, powered tailgate and much better software. There are lots of reasons. Aerodynamic efficiency, the efficiency of the car and how many of the other features sap the power (air conditioning, heating, etc) and of course overall weight will also be a factor. Also, if you have dual motors (so all wheel drive) it isn’t as efficient as a single motor where just one set of wheels is being powered. Then there is the construction and materials used in the batteries.
So there are a lot of reasons that have to be taken into account. I hope that helps?

Another cracking review and pretty much along the lines I thought. For me as a man in his 50’s it comes across as all a bit bland and trying far too hard with the interior. It may well appeal more to younger buyers but then there are a lot of very good rivals for similar money that are also competing for those buyers.
For me it needs to be significantly cheaper to grab market share - £36k is smack in Megane E-Tech, Borne, Niro/Kona territory and I wouldn’t buy it over any of those. If it was pitted directly against MG around £30k then okay but as it is sorry I’m disappointed.

What’s interesting Ian was I was in a meeting with a large car manufacturer that starts with “F” (and it wasn’t Fiat or Ferrari) and according to their research younger buyers have little or no brand loyalty, and will only buy from car manufacturers who have a positive sustainability message. That’s why some of these new brands are starting to appear and are having some success. BYD is one of the biggest sellers in native markets. Over 2m vehicles sold. They are huge, make no mistake.

      @@AutoEV @TheLynseyando:
It's all to do with how wide the door opens, seat height, the sill width, sill height, the internal 'dip' from the sill to the car floor and how flat/ forgiving the seat cushion sides are.
In general, the wider the door opens, the height of the seat, the narrower / lower the sill ('dip' to the floor of the car) and the flatter the seat cushion is, the easier it is to get in and out of.
The sills on the Atto 3 are similar to those of the 1st generation Qashqai, as in they are quite narrow with 2 subtle tiers to their height, unlike the sills from similar sector models from Kia, Hyundai, Skoda (VAG), BMW, Mercedes, MG, Toyota etc which are around an inch (or so) wider than the Atto 3 and they generally involve 3 different tiers to their overall height. This extra sill width / height forces you to twist on the hip whenever you enter and exit the vehicle, putting extra strain on the spine. The narrower sills, seat height and short sill to car floor 'dip' on the Atto 3, we found, minimises unwanted twists and reduces any sense of the dreaded 'climbing' into the vehicle.
The doors on the Atto 3 open fairly wide, with good roof height, providing a good sized entry. The seat height can be adjusted and the seat cushion sides are fairly flat and forgiving on the Atto 3, so sliding in and out is relatively unimpaired, unlike the 'sport style' seats with more solid side supports from the better known brands. I would liken getting in and out of the Atto 3 to that of the Gen 1 phase 2 Qashqai for ease of entry / exit.
Generally, but not always, if the door covers the sill, the sill is likely to be a narrower than that of a car where the door sits above the sill.
Ordered ours at the end of January and we're picking our Atto 3 up next week. The Atto 3 was the only vehicle we looked at (and we looked at pretty much every option) that my not so tall, regular passenger with mobility issues can get in an out of easily and without too much discomfort.
For @TheLynseyando: Arnold Clark, Lookers, Stratstone, LHS, Snows, Pentagon Group all offer BYD dealerships across the UK, or to find your nearest dealer go to BYD UK Web Site and use their dealer search to find the one closest to you. It's best to have a hands on to try for yourself. You might (like us) be very pleasantly surprised.
I hope this makes sense and that it helps.

Remember that the Australian price has a government subsidy for EVs and the stamp duty they pay compared to our VAT rate is tiny in most states. Australian cars have a smaller screen and Chinese batman tyres, European ones come with branded tyres. They're not going to sell this car for less than an MG4 which in Trophy spec to get a parking camera costs £32,495.00. The Atto 3 has far more tech and the glass roof + SUV slightly larger car. am i the only one who hates how rims are always not symmetrical when they are designed with a direction? these, for instance, are pointing forward on one side, and backward on the other side, and it irks me! we need a rim manufacturer to do a mirrored rim set, so they will be pointing in the same direction on both sides of the car.

Surely,on this example then they would be nome-interchangeable and there's more expensive.🤔

@@brianhollyhomes1565 of course they would, a set for the right side and a set for the left side. This way, it's a completely different look depending on which side of the car you're on 😅

    No, no, no, nooo...
Don't be fooled ; these are a badly-built POS - it was introduced in NZ and Oz six months ago and it's been a nightmare; failing electronics, promised features not delivered / not working as promised - and significant rust issues on vehicles only a few months old.
These aren't galvanised, just painted with 'rust preventative' - if you're in a location that salts the roads, you can expect a very short life.
This is the internet, don't take my word, please, please have a deep look at the experiences that NZ / Oz owners have been having.

Oh, and BTW, the seat material is a rubbery-vinyl which feels pretty terrible and is more than a bit 'sweaty'.

Skip that comment - i've owned one for 5 months - the referred rust was crashed vehicle, disassemble, left out in the weather - yes NZ was an early adopter - carplay is now here, along with other OTA updates - not had a single issue with mine

I'm one of those "disappointed" NZ buyers that you describe. Back in September last year I picked up my new Atto 3 and have since done 14,000km on it. What's gone wrong so far? Um, er, nothing. NZ has had a very wet period since I picked the car up but rust? No. Aren't galvanised? They are, via an electrical bath process in which the whole car is immersed in the galvanising tank and electrostatically treated. Sensitive areas like bolt heads then have a wax compound applied to seal out moisture from areas where metal screws may have broken the galvanising. The rust rumour that you picked up on came from somebody in Australia who published some photos of what may (or may not) have been an Atto 3 which had been crashed and sat in a wreckers yard for a few months and showed a little surface rust on areas subject to the damages. Failing electronics? Not that I've heard. You're probably picking up on the fact that the first 500 arrived after six weeks onboard the ship from China with the electronic key fobs actually in the car. This meant that the car and the fob were continually talking to each other and that some electrical services such as the built in 4G SIM card was constantly using the 12v battery, This resulted in some 12v batteries depleting to the point where they sulphated and quickly failed. BYD NZ tried to get them back on the road quickly by "borrowing" batteries from other cars from the same shipment which hadn't yet been delivered, some of those replacement batteries thus suffered the same sulphation and failed. The keys were taken out of the second shipment before dispatch and the problem is gone. Features not working? Everything promised on mine works, and a lot more besides. BYD do free Over The Air (OTA) updates so new and improved features happen regularly. The Atto 3 is a splendid car which significantly overdelivers on BYD's somewhat conservative promises. The quality is first rate. You, Mr Zaphods BlueCar are talking from a position of painful ignorance. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

I believe you are incorrect. Eu and export Asian cars are galvanised. Indian and local Chinese market cars may have subpar rust prevention applied.
