Tom, just wanted to say thank you. Even in a rough time you still found the time to bring us a new video to enjoy. I don't think many of the regulars here would mind if you dropped less vids until lifes a bit calmer. Maybe a longer tues vid as a catch all. Just bung a lil disclaimer at start and end of "no friday vid this week guys". I for one would be totally fine with it. Might take a lil stress off your shoulders. Remember it's Family, Farm, TH-cam.. *ONLY* in that order x

Do not let TH-cam stress you! Family, work, and the rest is the order. I used to put work at priority and I paid for it in later years. I know TH-cam has improved your situation greatly. But you have a loyal base that will understand if you don’t get to keep a perfect schedule at times. Many “tubers” have people to edit and to do the backend items which makes things easier. But we viewer understand and respect you and will not get mad if things get a lil wonky.

We used to feed Sugar Beet whole to the cows, placed in feeders at 06:00 by my IH 414. They would not leave it, but would get their sharp teeth into them, until the troughs were empty. My uncle used to add Aniseed powder to the dairy cake, and that would also cause a feeding frenzy.

This is what I put into chat, into GPT. I asked it the following question. As humans are tastebuds, very change with taste and texture as we get older.
What do farmers actually do to make their products better not so much on the yield side, but taste better for the consumer . The answer came up with the following below just to let you know..
    Diet and Nutrition for Cows:
The diet of dairy cows significantly influences the quality of milk they produce. Cows that graze on fresh grass tend to produce milk with a richer flavor and higher levels of beneficial nutrients (such as omega-3 fatty acids).
Conversely, if cows are fed a diet primarily composed of grains or processed feed, the milk may have a different taste and texture. Some farmers intentionally adjust the cow’s diet to achieve specific milk characteristics.
    Cow Breed and Genetics:
Different cow breeds yield milk with varying fat content, protein levels, and overall composition. For instance:
Holsteins: These cows are known for their high milk production but lower fat content.
Jerseys: Jerseys produce milk with a higher fat content, resulting in creamier dairy products.
Selective breeding also plays a role. Farmers may choose specific genetics to optimize milk quality.
    Hormones and Growth Factors:
Some dairy farmers use growth hormones (such as bovine somatotropin) to increase milk production. While this boosts yield, it may alter the milk’s composition.
However, in many regions, the use of growth hormones is regulated or prohibited due to potential health concerns.
    Animal Welfare and Stress Levels:
Happy, stress-free cows tend to produce better-quality milk. Stress can affect milk composition and flavor.
Access to clean water, comfortable shelter, and proper care all contribute to the well-being of dairy cows.
    Processing and Pasteurization:
The way milk is processed and pasteurized affects its texture and taste. Ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurization, for example, extends shelf life but can alter flavor.
Homogenization breaks down fat globules, ensuring uniform texture but potentially affecting taste.
    Age and Taste Perception:
As you rightly pointed out, individual taste perception varies. Age, genetics, and exposure to different flavors all influence how we perceive taste.
Some people may prefer milk with a stronger flavor, while others prefer milder options.
    Artisanal vs. Industrial Production:
Artisanal dairy products often retain more natural flavors and textures because they undergo minimal processing.
Industrial-scale production may sacrifice some nuances in favor of consistency and longer shelf life.
In summary, dairy farming practices, cow management, and processing methods all contribute to the final product. While some changes enhance certain aspects (like yield or safety), others may impact taste and texture. Ultimately, it’s a delicate balance that dairy farmers strive to achieve to meet consumer preferences and nutritional needs. 🥛🐄

to add to the stress - the clamp just worked this year with a good amount of waste being so close to the muck pile (the weather did not co-operate this year and be fine so you could spread it) - if you are doing 10-20-40 acres you will need somewhere different/better to store it - another clamp or bagged or a bit of both - I can see a concrete truck in your future - result of cows on maize was great Tom you must be really pleased with that

beet pulps is really great feed. On our farm we are making silage from it mostly in "the noodle" eurobag we also try to feed the dryed ones but our beefs and ostriches prefers the pupls to be fermented. So I have question: Do you plan to feed the full load as fresh? becouse if so, how long does it take you to get through the whole load becouse it goes bad a bit quickly if you leave it on the ground like that.
PS: good video as always keep up the good work and this might sounds as clishé but I think you need this: you're amazing and you're doing great so have a nice day and don't forget to take care

Tom if you grow 40 acres of maize you could reduce your grass silage area by 120 acres which would solve the problem of where to put 40 acres of maize. 1 ac of maize will yeild what 3 acres of silage will and it will cost the same as 1st cut silage. 2nd/3rd and 4th cut silage is very expensive
If you do go sowing maize I think you should sow it under plastic and sow it early so you can get it off early. You’ll be nearly guaranteed a high yeild and good starch with using plastic and you will have it off in late September or early October before land gets wet and you will have time to get a crop in after it aswell. Winter wheat or westotwolds maybe

If you want to make corn work I would recommend making sure you chose maturity and can chop at the right timing to achieve your desired quality, corn yield and quality can decline rapidly if not harvested timely

If you do maize again, where is it going to be stored? Especially if you do 40 acres of it.
Separate thought. I notice there's a significant berm beside the clamp to help hold the walls upright. Don't remember that ever making it into a video. But maybe I missed one along the way.

Do you have a long term forcast for some significant dryer weather? If not then you need to plan on buying your maize since the water will help it grow but you'll never get it out of the field. Good luck on your future endeavors!! Also good luck with the back Ginge!!

A dairy farmer here from the upper Midwest U S A and we use corn silage as the primary forage base. Milking 200 cows and young stock and normally chop 200 to 300 acres of corn a year. Can’t image trying to feed our herd without corn silage. We also put up around 50,000 bushels of high moisture corn grain also.

I think doing maize is a good move , its such a good feed and this time you will have time to have a better place sorted to store it , and plenty of muck on the land you going to grow it on , its a good crop to to clean up any docks and such in the grass too , and in a month or 2 cattle will be out cuts the work a bit freeing up time to do the field work , now you need to just chill a bit more take a bit of time for yourself and the little one , you have Luke who knows what he is doing , also planting maize will not add to your work load a phone call and as your dad says its done , so so interesting seeing the info on your computer too

It was worth it if the Corneal Processor Was setup correctly, To Crimp/Squash the corneal so the cows can process the nutrients FOr effectively than what we seen On the video were major of the corneal were Done badly from the processor not been processed correctly. @Tom You need to watch some proper US dairy farmers that use Maize and you will understand the Corneal processor inside the harvest is the major part for harvesting that effect the cows toward end Milk output.... I even said this on a previous video
You got Un-accurate Processor Harvest, I even seen it from the Crack from the corneals and how they wern't done correctly Compared to 100% maize farmers in the US.
if you want a few good farmers to watch and get some good research how they set up their harvest for maize let me know. UK is primary Grass, Not maize, All this extra feed your purchasing could be reduced with maize being done properly for your farm, However it's a HUGE change. I don't expect a reply from you But some US Research will Teach you alot
After you did BBC, I felt you lost that Personality for your farm and how you did the videos

Hi Tom and the Ginger Guy, will it ever stop raining. I don't think I have seen your paddocks that much under water. At least once the sun comes out the grass will fly out of the ground. Looks like you have a lot of dry matter to spead before the wet slurry, making your jobs pile up. I think the reason to use maize silage is in the stat's, so whether you grow it or buy it in is the next decision. The girls cubicles are working well and they look very content in there. While things are steady at the moments, maybe it's time to step back a bit and recharge your batteries for when the Ginger Guy is away. I hope the rain stops for you soon and the sun appears now its spring time. Chris from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.

life won't get any easier if you keep taking on more things to do mate !!!!!. looks to me if you were going to do maize every year you could do with another silage clamp.......quite a bit of waste with the way you done it this year. i think every livestock farm has got heaps and heaps of muck /slurry taking up room ........your farm certainly is wet ........the down side of it being so level .......if you had some hills it would run off
