Herding dogs are absolutely amazing and you couldn't be a shepherd without them. I love to watch Cammy at the Sheep Game with his dog, Meg.

only problem is that if you are training them yourself than you start to forget a lot when you replace one around retirement age so either you need to replace every few years or try to teach your current one like its a rookie just to keep yourself in the game.
still this dog is much better than my family farm sheep dogs in past by the look of it as ours tend to end up less trained by the user error haha.. we have run icelandic sheep dogs and even tried mixes with border collie but icelandic aint the smartest dog around sometimes as it like to play more with the sheep and forget the job at hand but border collie has work better as horse herding dogs but icelandic is very strong sniffing out sheep under snow so we tend to like the icelandic breed.

My dog isn't a herding dog breed but she herds her chickens when I ask her to. She's actually 1/3 pomeranian and 3/4 beagle. She loves her chickens and hangs with them all the time. I can leave her with them and I don't have to worry about it. They are not scared of her but when they know it's time for bed they go to bed for her. She's a 15lbs dog. My grandma's weiner dog now helps as well. It honestly helps me sooo much especially when they don't want to go to bed.

I've had 3 border collies in the past and 1 of those; my first one, Gin was a card toting herder being bred from a North American and a US champion herder. Got her for a deal $1000 because she had 1 blue eye. Loved the shot where the two of you are talking and the herder is resting on his hip just chillin'!!

I was in County Galway and there were dogs for sheep and cows. They would nip the heel of the cows to get them to go where they wanted and were trained to look out for a cow kicking them.

We used to call sheep over wintered too long on dairy cow early grass grazing, grass lice! Used to set the growth of grass back way too much as left on too long. Over the years, people are, have realised mid feb is latest to get them off. But, i admit they have a place, in the right fields, right length of time, just as youve done this year.

As a horse person, yes I agree, they don’t do much for improving the land… Ive heard farmers call them hay burners…. Which I feel is pretty accurate… for horses not doing a farm job, which is the majority, pasture pets. Love them to pieces. Also watching a good farm dog is always a treat, some need almost no input from the farmer it is so impressive.

well farm horses have their use as in iceland we send sheep up the mountain in spring to collect them in fall so we havent traded them for bikes as sheep like to play with danger and if you follow sheep like blind man than you arent smarter than sheep haha , horse knows to act against rider if it see it aint smart route.

Interesting take on how useful sheep can be to the dairy farmer. They certainly tidy up the pasture (and the hedges) improving the land generally. There are some good sheep farmer youtubers. "The Sheep Game", Canadian "Sandy". and the amazingly Australian, "Tara Farms" - which is my favourite. They all show the absolute dedication to the welfare of their critturs that you do with your cows, plus great technical skills; but these guys are just Masochists: 2000 inexperienced first time ewe mums lambing in 6 weeks, that's 50/day, at least a 25 hour working day. Madness! Kelpies seem to be the popular sheep dog in this part of Australia.

Typically, a female sheep in the UK who is now coming up on her first birthday, is called a “hogget” or “hog.” She needs to grow and mature her first year
so she can be physically capable of carrying her lambs. When that ewe is going to the ram for her first babies, she gets called a “gimmer.” She then finally gets to be called a “ewe” when she’s had her first babies on the ground.

Horses put nothing back into the land? Last time i looked mine produced huge amounts of manure that can be spread when it's rotted. Curious to know which breed of horses you own that don't do this! I appreciate there's a process to this but so is there to slurry spreading, or do farmers have all that equipment for fun? Anyway, horses aren't commercial farm animals in Britain and Ireland 🇮🇪 generally because they aren't consumed. 😂

i still have PTSD about that one time when i was delivering food for the cows on the 2nd farm. we had a auto feeder that you just dumped the mixed rations in and then it would come and give the cows food every hour or so. so i emptied my load in to the auto feeder and turned it on. whent in to the cows to manualy turn on the floor scarapers as we don't want them to be automatic when we are not there. i get the scraping done and then just notice that there are 4 cows munching on the food from outside the enclosure. i think god fucking damit 4 cows escaped and now i'm gonna have to chase them back in. once i actually looked att the other side of the building i noticed there where a gazilion cows all over the place that had escaped. that was a 5 hour battle and then another hour and a half of chasing and playing hide and seak with a calf in the corn fields.

we also lost 2cows that summer. we had a few cows out in a field that was next to a river. it was a extreamly hot day and when we tried to load up the cows for transport back to the farm 2 of them managed to jump over the electric fence. we managed to chase them back over again and back in to their field. but we had to chase them around for a very long time and run all over the field and we could not managem to run towards the trailer. we where exhausted and the cows where extreamly overheated and exhausted so we decided to just leave them there and let them calm down and cool down over night. but yeah them mother fuckers crossed the river and became wild forest cows never to be seen again.
