Not only does Immortal Hulk take Hulk back into horror, but it also pays WONDERFUL tribute to Hulk's history and lore, something I feel like people sleep on
The Unbelievable Gwenpool by Christopher Hastings was spectacular. Love the manipulation of the comic book itself and the acknowledgement that certain versions of characters are only there for a short while because there is a status quo
Immortal hulk, Cates Venom, Tomasi’s Superman and super sons, Snyder’s Batman, Williamson and Adams Flash runs, HoXPoX, Brubaker’s Cap, Bendis’ New Avengers, and IDW TMNT are just a few of many great modern runs that I hold near and dear to my heart
That recent Warworld run on Superman was fucking amazing. Some of the best Superman stories can boil him down to what makes him important and that one does it.
My list for “modern” or new classics for Marvel include Ewing’s Immortal Hulk, Jason Aaron’s Thor, Slott’s Superior Spider-Man and his Silver Surfer run. Superior Spider-Man got me started reading comics consistently, and I haven’t stopped yet. For DC, Snyder’s Batman is the easy go-to. My picks are also Tom Taylor’s Injustice, Ram V’s The Swamp Thing and Tomasi’s Superman run. I don’t read as much DC so I’ve no doubt overlooked some runs.
You mentioned a few Tom King works, but I think my absolute favourite is his run on The Vision. There's something so captivating and tragic about Vision trying to make his own form of family, and for it to have some form of brief harmony and happiness, only for it to gradually fall apart until the dream is completely shattered. Absolute 10/10, cannot recommend it enough. Another banger, this time outside of the Big Two, is Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye from IDW. An indelible stamp on the 'Formers franchise with perhaps the most interesting and complex version of Megatron I've ever seen, a story about second chances, redemption, love and wacky sci-fi shenanigans; an absolute wild ride from start to finish.
Another Modern classic I really loved was Jeremy Adams flash run because holy shit that run gave me everything I ever wanted especially with wally west my flash being a great family man with his wife Linda park and having all 2 kids Irey and Jai west going on fun adventures and kicking ass and saving the day was really aweosme and tons of fun, also a bonus seeing the super sons Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self and Damian Wayne robin teaming up with Irey and jai west and animal girl is really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.

Shorter arcs like Tom King's Vision, Thunderbolts by Ellis, and Cates' run of Thanos should also always be in print.
This is tough because there are so many runs that are way older than I realized. But if I'd have to choose, Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk, Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther, Jason Aaron's Thor, Scott Snyder's Batman, Tom King's Mister Miracle and Vision, and of course, Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil
2:20 oh Joel, you’re not old. If you were old that would make me old. And if I were old….that would mean…I have to eliminate Nightwing….for some reason.

You guys brought up a lot of good stuff, but I'd like to throw a couple things out there in Sam Humphries' Green Lanterns run and Jed MacKay's Black Cat. I don't think either had a slump, and they both tell interesting stories. I don't hear enough talk about Green Lanterns, but it has such great character development with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, and as someone who deals with anxiety on a daily basis, Jess's journey is really inspiring. Black Cat was what put Jed MacKay's name in my mind, and anything with his name on it since seems like it's been gold. It's such a fun book and paints a very nuanced Felica Hardy. Between it and Moon Knight, I will pick up a Jed MacKay book pretty much because his name is on it.
Great job guys! You hit almost every nail on the head. The Jason Aaron run on The Punisher can kiss my ass, and not because it held Frank responsible. It's because in order to get him where he wanted to go Jason Aaron had to retcon so much about the character. So much so that it's not a continuation of the main line Punisher but rather his shitty Max series. An actual classic Punisher run is the Garth Ennis one, both the in canon one and the Max run.

It just had everything going right for it. I’ll need to give it a reread at sone point soon.
Hell yes to the Moon Knight run
Jason Aaron's Thor run! Was great and even used for a movie all be it a bad one.
There are 15 hardcovers of the IDW Turtles I know cause I own them all.
Tom DeFalco's Spider Girl run.
I love Saga but haven't read anything after the hiatus
No ‘10s Hickman?!??
What about the Savage Avengers run under Gerry Duggan the one with Conan 🤔?
Tynion’s detective comics run is better than Snyder’s Batman run. I don’t think it is hot take or controversial, since many of us do feel this way.
Im only missing 3 issues of Jed Mckay run
I know it’s not superhero, but how do we feel about Something is Killing the Children as a modern classic?
I submit X-Factor (Investigations) Peter David. 2005-2013
Once and Future is a modern classic.
The walking dead is a modern classic. The ending might feel rushed but it doesn’t feel unearned
Tomasi GL Corps for me
Engagement and interaction with creator to please the mathemagics that choses what gets seen or not.
IDW Transformers for sure
Also Kelly Thompson Captain Marvel.
Kyle Higgins Power Rangers run !
Venditti Hawkman
Morrisons Batman is one in my opinion
Yeah, pretty glaring omission
Zdarskys daredevil hands down
I don’t think we’re in the modern era any longer. It started in 86. I was 8. A lot has changed. If anything I think it’s a post modern or trade era. I would even say that Avengers: Disassembled ended the modern era.
So it's not modern anymore?

❤❤❤
Marvel 2 in 1 by chip
I love how everybody in the comment section is ignoring Image Comics and other companies besides DC and Marvel.
Glad you love it!
God this is making me feel so old 😂
As a big Miles fan Saladin Ahmed run is ass.
Bendis and Pichellis run is goated.
