Wow never thought of it from that angle. To me it always felt more like a song about addiction. Sort of like "master of puppets" where it's the point of view of whatever drug has a hold on you. As someone who has experienced this I always related to this song.👍
That's a great interpretation, but I think this song was actually inspired by a movie (James talked about this in an interview) where a puppet controls a person but it looks like the person is controlling the puppet. So everyone thinks the person is controlling the puppet but actually it's the tiger way around.

My first exposure to Metallica was the VHS of the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. The opening acts were Extreme, Def Leppard, Metallica, and Guns N Roses. Such an amazing show.

I listened to Metallica A LOT during my most severe depression years. The lyrics spoke to me from my interpretation of what I was going through at the time. My whole 20's was really bad.

I’m not a big fan of the black album but this is one song I’d recommend to anyone unfamiliar with Metallica. It’s sums up their essence succinctly in one song and it’s catchy as hell.
One of the great things about Metallica reactions is that they never copyright strike. They are one of the rare bands that own their own music catalog, so you don’t have a record company or a third party hired by the record company to go after channels on TH-cam. I don’t think I’ve seen a single takedown or copyright strike on a Metallica reaction. I could be wrong, but I’ve seen a ton of Metallica reactions and none have ever been blocked to struck.
This song contains one of Metallica's most massive riffs of all time! Not a fast, thrashy song, like Metallica fans were used to at the time, but crushing none the less! This album will forever be a turning point for the creativity of the metal genre.
The second person you mention "hovering" could be thought of as ourselves. Every time I hear this song I think of my (lack of) shadow work. When you embrace and come to terms with yourself as a whole of your true parts, you can truly live as who you are and who you are meant to be.
This song became my favorite Metalica song when my mom was jamming to it while she was doing her 40 yard dashes... My mom is a bigger woman but this song had her MOVING
"Sad Patrol"! 🤘 _Master Of Puppets_ is worth a full album review too. Recommendation: Ozzy Osbourne "No More Tears". Epic - Ozzy's greatest song? Might be.
Any Ozzy or Black Sabbath is great,if you listen beyond the instrument's and read the lyrics of any of their songs it brings more depth and insight.Maybe a personal revalation if you will.
the essence of Metallica is their first album "kill em all" their best album unquestionably. It's the album I listened to almost 40 years ago and it's the one I've listened to the most in my life. Today I discovered a band "Lovebites" heavy, power, thrash, metal. An all-female band from the Japanese scene. And I must say that some of their titles have the color, Metallica. A band that deserves special attention for those who are open-minded. Search on you tube and listen to "break the wall", "The hammer of wrath", "Set the world on fire" (a killer), "thunder vengeance" (live) the opening of the concert.
Depression was a predominant theme with Metallica when they made their unofficially titled Black Album. A song that really brought the depression theme to the forefront was “The God that Failed.” It was about the singer/guitar player losing his mother to cancer because her Christian Scientist beliefs prohibited her from getting treated.
Best live performance, ever! I've been going to live shows for a long time now, and I can say, with out a doubt, the greatest song of all time to hear live....Rocks your very soul...great reaction for a great jam...🔥
Script-Flip by 'BoomerTang': Author Rudyard Kipling published a literary work in 1891 titled 'The Light that Failed'. 100 years later (1991), metal band Metallica released 'The God that Failed' as the first radio-played song from their 'Black' Album. In 1988 a A SciFi film was released titled 'Alien Nation' featuring a 'Newcomer' named 'Rudyard Kipling'. Another 'Black' album favorite, 'Sad But True', if lyrically followed, seems to have a theme of 'Alienation'. I learned all of this searching the origins of the phrase "bite the bullet". The actor who portrayed 'Rudyard' in the James Caan "E.T.PD" flick, that man earlier played 'Rafterman' in Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket'. In a (literally) pivotal scene, Gomer Pyle almost literally, 'Bites the Bullet' using a 'Full Metal Jacket'. Sad...but True.
Fact: the first concert I ever attended was Mtallica and their .. and Justice For All album. I was little, but damn did that start a music addiction / obsession that's lasted 40+ years.
I never knew the true meaning behind this song and I’ve been listening to it for nearly 30 years!! As an Atheist it makes me love it even more!!! I always thought it was about addiction, like your explanation much more tho
James was raised with deep religion roots from what I hear. Yet I’ve been raised with no religion as in “ be suspicious of all religions because they are cults” Soooo atheist upbringing, but still I can relate to Metallica. That’s the genius of Metallica From my perspective, this song id about our own personal conscience. How we justify everything we do and how we easily the human mind can be broken
This has always been a "hard pill to swallow" song that bridges the gap between every listener and their experiences. A hard truth everyone should face within themselves.(just my perspective)
Great seeing this live in concert! June 27th, 1992 at The Castle in Charlevoix. Standing on the middle 3rd row bench that eventually became "The Mosh Pit!" Go beyond Metallica. Just once. One listen- "Sepultura Beneath the remains." Studio version. Lyrically, musically. Best Metal ever..
When I heard this all those years ago, I thought they were saying Sand Patrol, omg, too embarrassment when I finally found out 😅🤦♀️
This song contains one of Metallica's most massive riffs of all time!
Before I clicked, I quietly hoped it would be a lyric vid. My favorite Metallica song.
You should do Whiskey in the Jar! Thin Lizzy and Metallica versions!
I've always looked at this song as the ultimate interpretation of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde , the normal and the monster inside us all
This was my favorite song for a long, long, long time.
That breath control tho. He didn't want to be the voice and here James is plus one of the best rhythm guitarists. Got you man and hey from Scotland.
The commercial for MAGIC used to scare tf out of my as a child.
And still to this day, have NOT seen that movie.
Script-Flip by 'BoomerTang':
Author Rudyard Kipling published a literary work in 1891 titled 'The Light that Failed'.
The riff of this song is SO GOOD. Playing it always gives me stank face
Yet I’ve been raised with no religion as in “ be suspicious of all religions because they are cults”
Soooo atheist upbringing, but still I can relate to Metallica. That’s the genius of Metallica
From my perspective, this song id about our own personal conscience.
How we justify everything we do and how we easily the human mind can be broken
Mad props to the whole black album!
This has always been a "hard pill to swallow" song that bridges the gap between every listener and their experiences. A hard truth everyone should face within themselves.(just my perspective)
Seen them play this live a few times. Doesn't get much more chunky and groovy than this.
This bands songs are classics still better than anything since.
An awesome reaction. Worth every second.
Please do Astronomy by Blue Öyster Cult (Secret Treaties version), Metallica did an awesome cover of it! That or Nosferatu.
Great reaction to one of their best songs, the part I love is the end I'm you! So many people love that part because it is a self reflection.
Great seeing this live in concert! June 27th, 1992 at The Castle in Charlevoix. Standing on the middle 3rd row bench that eventually became "The Mosh Pit!" Metallica puts on a great live show, they are the Titans of Heavy Metal, and I've been fortunate to see them a number of times.
Jamal...Check out their stuff from the "Kill 'Em All" album. You'll love "Seek & Destroy" "Whiplash" "Motorbreath" "Hit the Lights" and "The Four Horsemen" Thanks!
Best metal production ever.
To this day every metal band wants that thick, shiny Bob Rock sound.
Man Lars Ulrich's Drumming was so damn good here. He may not be the fanciest drummer in the world but he is simple and very effective. Just like the old saying goes "Less is More"
Truth is, as much shit as he gets, I can't imagine Metallica having any other drummer than Lars.
Shit sounds like Thor's hammer in that intro
My favorite drum sound of any Metallica album.
The snare and kick drums are so distinctive. You can hear them in a loud bar and automatically know that Metallica is on the jukebox
@@BATTIS94 He has sadly deteriorated a lot over the years. His time is terrible, he can't remember his own songs and it looks like he's thinking of something else half the time. Doesn't take away the fact that his drumming is fantastic on these early albums, though.
My auntie gave me the black album CD when I was in 3rd grade and this song hooked me. Been my favorite band since
I'm a old rocker, but I got bitten by the Metallica big in the 90's. Haven't stop yet!!!!
This song made me realise that there needs to be a word to particularly describe a 'filthy riff'. Absolute banger.
I call filthy riffs a humdinger lol
Filthy Riff copyright 2021 Bertie OK ;-)
The movie "Magic", wow. A favorite of mine.
