I've seen just a couple of videos of your channel, but you have a subscriber. I love seeing people introduced to the music I love. Living vicariously through people new to the music, the songs, I think this is why people constantly peddle music to each other haha!
This is a pro-environment song, an environmental warning, that came out in 1988, a few days after I started my sophomore year of high school. I wasn't into metal at that point; I was listening to Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and other classic rock. A kid named Matt Kirchner introduced me to Metallica one day by playing Blackened in the car as we skipped a study hall to go get some ice cream and an audio cable for his guitar/amp. Good times...
I'm 46 and have been addicted to this album since I was 13. I remember the first time I heard this band growing up in a one traffic light town in 1989 with no internet, no cable, no cell phones and 4 channels on the TV. They performed ONE at the end of the music awards and it blew my mind. All I had ever heard up to that point were FM RADIO glam rock bands like poison and Def leopard which were everything I wanted to get away from but still listened to because it's what I had access to. When I heard Metallica perform ONE for the first time I knew I was hearing everything I loved musically both consciously and subconsciously. When they were done I think Whoopi Goldberg took to the Award stage and yelled "HOLY SHIT, WOW"!
Cold and mad and angry and melodic, the more I listen the more I think they should and will be considered as a Mozart or a bethoven or any historical music genius you can think off
You may notice the overall sound quality is kinda high end and tinny. Lars (the drummer) had unresolved issues with the death of their bassist Cliff Burton and was notorious for taking it out on their new bassist Jason Newstead. During production Lars told the engineer to turn the bass down in the mix to an almost inaudible level. The album, while classic and incredible, suffered in overall quality by not having any bottom end or low from bass. You can search for this song (and album) remixed to include bass and it's skull crushing. It's called And Justice For Jason.
At the same time, I think the lack of bass really gave the album a Progressive-sounding edge to it. Something just hits different and it feels more like a cold hard slap of reality. With less low end, harsher distorted guitars, and thin click-like drums, it managed to put more emphasis on the words being spoken.
I don't think it suffered much, 8 million sales in the US alone without much radio airplay at the time. I get it though they could have/should have raised the bass in the mix some, but I do disagree with the suffering part. I'm just glad I got to see them on the Masters tour with Cliff.

I was 16 when And Justice For All came out, loved the whole album then and still do to this day.
Me too. 16 years old. 🤘
Dude..when you stare into the camera and are speechless...the metal has crushed you! Love it.
This is HOW you start an album!!! Great environmental message too...
this whole album from start to finish is great.
"melted my damn face off"🤘
Instant "Stink Face" that lasts through the whole song.
LOL!
They are absolutely amazing live. Worth the ticket price.
Blackened! My absolute favorite Metallica song ever! So glad you reacted to it and loved your facial expressions throughout. Killer vocals, lightning riffs and thundering percussion and bass! Hell yeah. Wish I'd had been in studio with you on this one so we could have head banged together! 😁🎧🤘
“...And Justice for All” is their best album ever. Yes I said it. Respect for “Master of Puppets”, but this is their best album.
The Black Album has entered the chat...
@@TheTenCentStory *sellout album
I agree. And I love Master and the Black album. But Justice is their best.
@@dcondon5 I actually really like Ride the Lighting because it has Creeping Death.
@@TheTenCentStory yeah that’s like their worst, good album lol.
This is DEFINITELY a stank face song the whole way through. Not even a question
Harvester has to be next....just feels right (unless Jamel's already rocked it).
It's a master piece of the transition.., Metallica is the King of transitions..!!
Awesome seeing someone getting it!
Ohhh hell ya shit brings me back to the day bro, nothing like a little save the planet musical masterpiece!! Wow!!!!! Lit up my day thanks for this!!!
You should try their instrumentals. Orion is a masterpiece
He mentioned that one already; that's why he said don't bother with the commentary. ;-)
@@brovold72 yes, I wrote before listening the end :/ I didn't know that he has heard Orion already. Unfortunately, there isn't video of it
@@olivierricci6550 "Blackened" really gets its point across, I'll give it that. "Orion" is strikingly beautiful though. There are easily a dozen all-time classics from those 80's albums that ine could legit single out as a favorite at any given time. Gonna have to play "Orion" (and the rest of "Master of Puppets" out on the highway today. Cheers.
@@olivierricci6550 Came out thirty-five years ago today, btw.
@@brovold72 And just think, they were basically just kids in their early 20s when they wrote Master Of Puppets. My son's middle name is Orion.
This album had a lot of anger in it. They were mourning the loss of Cliff and you can hear it for sure! There are no happy songs,,, just straight getting after it
When did they ever have "happy songs" with Cliff? Jump in the Fire is possibly the only one.
I've seen just a couple of videos of your channel, but you have a subscriber. I love seeing people introduced to the music I love. Living vicariously through people new to the music, the songs, I think this is why people constantly peddle music to each other haha!
Cheers from Portugal Jamel!
This song is sooooo underrated. It's definitly one of my favorites songs from Metallica.
Peace brother
Great video brother🤜💥🤛
Jamel - Metallica 🤯
This is a pro-environment song, an environmental warning, that came out in 1988, a few days after I started my sophomore year of high school. I wasn't into metal at that point; I was listening to Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and other classic rock. A kid named Matt Kirchner introduced me to Metallica one day by playing Blackened in the car as we skipped a study hall to go get some ice cream and an audio cable for his guitar/amp.
Good times...
Another great choices will be "Battery", "Dyers Eve", "Damage inc", "...and justice for all" by them
I'm 46 and have been addicted to this album since I was 13.
The look, the breathing, no words, AWESOME!
Cold and mad and angry and melodic, the more I listen the more I think they should and will be considered as a Mozart or a bethoven or any historical music genius you can think off
Reversed intro. Metallica never gets old to me.
@@TheBlackQueen 100%, AJFA has the best lyrics of any of their albums in my opinion.
I don't think it suffered much, 8 million sales in the US alone without much radio airplay at the time. I get it though they could have/should have raised the bass in the mix some, but I do disagree with the suffering part. I'm just glad I got to see them on the Masters tour with Cliff.
I think Ahdy Khairat's remixes are better, because they're more balanced rather than having the bass cover up the guitar sound.
@@5yearsout Lucky you :) I started listening to them in 88, and saw them 5 times on the AJFA tour.. and would have given almost anything to see them with Cliff.
This is my all time favorite Metallica song... Thanks for the awesome reaction...
My first Metallica concert and they opened with this song, anyone who saw this tour ANYwhere knew shit was fucking crazy....I ain't lyin'!!!!
This song opened the show and literally seats and people were flying.......I mean, it was insane!!!!!
Sometimes a song comes along with lyrics that get ever more relevant despite all your wishes that they won't apply anymore and will become dated. This is one of them.
Yes!
We (humas) just keep on inveting new ways to destroy our world.
That is James Hetfield’s gift. Simple, effective, timeless messages. They know how to tell a story.
