Just finished playing it for Solo Ensemble (Wisconsin State Wide Music "Compitition")... lots of fun! Good luck on the rolls, last section is tricky too if you haven't gotten there yet...
So fun story about me. I played Saxophone and Bassoon throughout middle and high school. When I got to high school marching band, I was put in auxiliary percussion (since marching bassoon is practically unheard of). My sophomore year, I was asked to do Xylophone, and I initially hated the thought, but as I started reluctantly learning mallets, I started realizing how much fun they are to play. After that realization, I worked my ass off and became center Marimba and front ensemble section leader by my junior year. To this day, I miss playing marimba, and wish I had my own to start practicing again.
omg yellow after the rain! xD i miss those days. i was so proud of myself when i learnt that. its probably the biggest classic in beginner/indermediate marimba for new students. I always give it to my first or 2nd years! absolute charm of a piece!
I clicked thinking, "This is going to make me jealous isn't it..." But I didn't expect you to be playing the song I was hoping to learn as I get back into playing marimba after 6 years without being able to touch it... Band trauma was, something else! I'm very happy you included the sheet music, it'll be so fun for me to learn now. You did great! X
no one speaks about the band trauma lol, I haven't been able to touch my mallets for almost a year. it also sucks bc I don't have thousands to spend on a marimba right now. I hate the association between playing marimba and all of the expectations that came with being in band. it'll take work to change that, but im hoping to play again, and I hope you will too!
I’m playing this for my Senior year as my first 4 mallet solo. Never was taught until we got a new percussion director. For sure the best director I’ve ever had. I’m performing it in 2 weeks for competition. Wish me luck
What my drum teacher always wants me to do it totally mess with the tempo. Chords have to be clean, not played as a flam, but other than that, just go nuts. Speed up, slow down, make random breaks (breaks should be long enough to seem intentional tho), get louder and more silent basically all of the time. If there is a marking, follow it. If not, make something up. It sounds scuffed, but it got me placed really high in a big competition, although I played a very easy piece, in comparison to the others. I honestly think it sounds really bad like that, but when I still sometimes practice it.
@@myotiswii I never thought playing with emotion meant you had to literally feel the emotion, I thought it was understood that you have an intent and a musical vocabulary to achoeve that intent. Not that actually feeling something would be bad (though I doubt you can play your best while depressed).
This was my first 4-mallet solo. Played it my 2nd year in percussion for 8th grade solo & ensemble. Lol I got so tired of this song and omg the blisters!!
I think it’s cool that Mitchell Peters wrote all of his etudes by hand but my god are they hard to read sometimes. I’m playing an intermediate etude of his on snare this semester
What's the one similiar to this but you're suppose to play with shells on your foot too? In 2011 the top solos were this/YATR and another fun marimba piece with the shells. Any old folks know what I mean?
I don't know if it's just me, but throughout the song, it felt like it was switching between a couple different nintendo games, mostly Mario games. First, it fell like Yoshi's Island, then it felt like a little bit of Kirby, then a Mario & Luigi game, then throughout the cycle again. Anyone else?
Sounds great! The only advice I'd give is to add more phrasing. For example, whenever I play this I like to emphasize the change in the arpeggiated chords to add some more interest, otherwise that middle section gets really boring and repetitive. Also work on making the rolls in the beginning more continuous instead of separated, because separated rolls like that can sound really jarring. Other than that it sounds really good!
HELL YES I'm gonna play this solo as a freshman and i just basically stumbled on a free recording!!! Edit: dammit you skipped a bar, still sounded good as hell tho
I took some time at the end of this year(senior year of hs) to start preparing for college and boosting rep, i’m mainly gud at snare with being able to rattle off pratt pieces like moby dick with relative ease I learned bach concerto in a minor for solo festival for no reason and on the last week of school i pulled out yellow after the rain and i nearly perfectly signtread it with varying tempos The only thing i don’t like about this is the first few rolls r pretty rhythmic in ur playing but the ones at the end r great
here before "sup loopy grandma" also this sounds really sick. if i were to give any critique it would probably just be dynamics as it seemed you started a crescendo at 1:45 when there wasn't one. Edit: also at 1:16 I think you took an extra bar for the diminuendo
can you tell me about your mic and audio recording setup? what mic do you use? just one way above? whats your audio capture software? I record myself playing Moon Chaseers and Verano Porteno but im clueless on mic setup and audio capture :( any help would be greatly appreciated!
7th grade solo it was either a snare piece or a 2 mallet marimba piece. 8th, some of my friends played yellow after the rain, a great easy piece to learn and get into 4 mallets. By the time we got into HS the next year most of the 8th grade percussionist in our middle school knew 4 mallet.
Not me immediately recognizing yellow after the rain from the way it's written in the thumbnail
I was just thinking that 🤣 my music looks the same way
IM LITERALLY PLAYING THIS FOR STATE TOMORROW!! The piece is called Yellow After The Rain
Who wrote this?
How’d you do?
How did you do?
Hope you emphasized the dynamics like EMC did
WE NEED AN UPDATE NOW!
I heard that first chord and instantly recognised Yellow After the Rain! Currently learning it, although I suck at the rolls :p
Just finished playing it for Solo Ensemble (Wisconsin State Wide Music "Compitition")... lots of fun! Good luck on the rolls, last section is tricky too if you haven't gotten there yet...
My friend and a couple of other people in it played it for solo contests.
I used it for my 4 mallet college audition. I instantly recognized it from the thumbnail lol.
When you're sitting around, just practice your rolls on a pillow, the carpet, etc. At least that's what I did lol
I'm learning it too 😭

*our bassoons march trombone or sax/low reed*
That's wild they would put you on xylo, it's typically the hardest and most important instrument in pit

Random flute player in the band room: "Cooooool. Hey! Can you play Megalovania??"
Percussionist: "How dare you! Also yes."
I love the sound of Marimba, almost as much as I love the sweet sound of Tenors!

Nice. Yellow After the Rain. Played that for long

I hope it went well :)
Love this piece when I played the hardest part was the 4 Sticks at the end
Same
Yellow After the Rain reminds me of something like a mix between the jazz group, The Manhattan Transfer and a high school drumline’s warm-up packet.
First marimba solo I played at a competition in CA when I was in HS. Brings back so many memories! Thanks. 👍👍
This is my first marimba solo and this video really helps me! I’ll be preforming in a few months

He really just wants you to play with emotion

And I really believe that most professionals are doing that too lol

This is one of my favorites pieces, I stressed many hours to perform this as a solo and I still somehow love it.
I never could get that block chord section at the end. Mitchell Peters books basically taught me all my best skills.
heyy, i played this piece in music school for an exam
it was pleasant to learn
Ah, Mitchell Peters.
Yellow after the rain is my favorite piece for marimba ! I could okay it once upon a time .. don’t think i could anymore now.
this took me back to sophomore year lmfao so many people played this for solo and ensemble
Yellow after the rain 🥰
All the good mallet Percussionist in my school know this song
You should play catching shadows by Ivan Trevino, with of course the editing that you play every part, the percussion sextet preferably
if you've seen the Trio Coleres arrangement of it, it is fantastic!
i’m learning that piece right now, it’s so much fun!
This!

YESSSS I wanna see Catching Shadows here sooooo badly! I love that piece
My sister played this for solo and ensemble freshman year!!! Great job!
AHH I JUST GOT TO PERFORM THIS!! What an incredible piece of percussion literature. Great job!!
Literally learning this, tomorrow class, I practiced a lot
After seeing this in early 2023, tomorrow I will be performing this piece for solo and ensemble festival
The only thing missing is to hide a snare drum underneath the marimba.
dude this was supposed to be the closer for my school’s indoor show this year but we had to cut it
certified hs solo and ensemble contest classic
People played this so much at my school its basically been shadow banned by both the directors and the students lmao
This was my first 4-mallet solo. Played it my 2nd year in percussion for 8th grade solo & ensemble.
Lol I got so tired of this song and omg the blisters!!
I’ve heard every person that has seen a Marimba play this
A middle schooler in my school once preformed that. There were a couple mistakes, but it still sounded pretty good.
One of my favourite marimba solos
I heard this and instantly was like omg that's yellow after the rain I played this for my college audition
My pal played this some years ago. It's one of two beginner pieces my teacher uses for beginners where I live. I never played it though
This piece is a rite of passage
Good Ol’ Yellow After the Rain. The most overplayed 4 mallet solo
yea its overplayed lol
Classic marimba piece w
Yellow after the rain is recognizable from a mile away without sound.
I think it’s cool that Mitchell Peters wrote all of his etudes by hand but my god are they hard to read sometimes. I’m playing an intermediate etude of his on snare this semester
I recognized this was Yellow After the Rain from the thumbnail lol
The amount of times I heard my friend who was the pit captain, constantly play this. It gave me PTSD Lol
yooo that was actually really awesome
In France also we play Yellow after the rain omg XD
This is a must play at Texas Region contest. Might as well bank on hearing it at least 10 times
I love piece so much
I love yellow after the rain
It just finished storming where I live and it looks yellow outside.
Hey man, that was so cool!
piss in the snow as my old instructor called it.
love it

This song is exactly the one I need to present to enter university 😃
Too easy, I don't think that's the best idea...

Playing this for solo and ensemble tomorrow :)

anyone? just me ? okay
That was awesome
So this was everyone’s first marimba solo right that’s just how it works
Let’s go to play Firth Of Fifth!)
❤ thoughts on how your keyboard playing has enhanced your rudimental drumming and or vice versa?
Ahhh the classic.

YELLOW AFTER THE RAIN!!!
A percussionist who can play drums and read mallet music? Impossible!
That was SICK
My schoolmate played this song so much In eith grade that I know based on the hand position- like she played this literally every day.

My friend who is in 8th grade (I’m in 7th) can play that and I’m practicing four mallet to play Oakland and then work my way up to that by next year
So what’s the difference 3/4 and 6/8 because the 3/4 to me sounded like 6/8 I am confused
