  • 'Which US President Is The Most Irish?'
    As Joe Biden begins a four-day visit to the island of Ireland, we ask, which US president is the most Irish?
    Presidents Biden, Obama, Reagan and Kennedy all have Irish ancestors who came to the United States in the 19th century.
    However, the link between the Emerald Isle and America’s head of state goes back much further.

      In Britain the great, great grandchildren of just 1 baby which left Ireland in maybe even before the 1870's - & ever since all marriages were to English men & women - STILL call themselves Irish & have Names like Patrick, Mary, Brendan, Sean, Nadean(?), Elisha, Michael etc. And forever waffle on about the battle of the Boyne & evil British & Oliver Cromwell 😂

      I am fortunate, as I am Welsh. Very few Americans try to claim to be Welsh Americans, partly because most of them do not even know where it is.
      Many Irish and Scots Americans like to plug into the 'Celtic' roots, which amuses me immensely. There are six living Celtic Languages, Irish, Scots and Manx Gaelic, Breton, Cornish (sort of), and Welsh.
      Half of ALL Celtic language speakers in the world, speak Welsh. It is the only Celtic Language not considered endangered by UNESCO. This is a country that has half the population of Ireland or Scotland, but has more native speakers of its own language than the Irish and Scots combined.....

      @@alganhar1 I'm Scottish and it's insane the amount of American I see calling themselves ''Scotch American'', I don't think I've ever heard a Scot in my life refer to ourselves as ''Scotch'' and the worst part is they are always related to William Wallace or Robert The Bruce, a direct descendant, they apparently have stronger Scottish blood than us who live and work here. • @arturobandini4078
      @arturobandini4078 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The tradition of identifying with incredibly distant ancestry is important to Americans because there is no American culture, as such. America as we know it was founded by immigrants, is a young country, and so people lack any sense of historic roots. Hence the reasons why you might hear an American saying something like "I'm Irish. My great, great uncle's second cousin was born in Dublin, see."

The Irish heritage thing is basically an internal US electoral matter that Ireland has very cleverly taken full advantage of. It is a bit like the "Irish" pub, which was based on pre-independence British legislation, or the "Emerald Isle" image. Ireland seems no greener than the rest of the British Isles. And isn't Guinness just another, albeit in my opinion better, stout - a type of beer that originated in London? @@danke1150 Sorry, but language changes over time. Descent means nothing if you do not retain the language, the culture. The Romans themselves knew that well enough and actively encouraged people to Latinise.
      Just because a word has a root in something does not mean it has precisely that meaning any more. I have some Spanish blood in me due to a family dalliance with a shipwrecked Spanish sailor washed up after the Spanish Armada, but I do not try to call myself Spanish Welsh.
      Such a thing is simply ridiculous. Its fine to be proud of your ancestry, but your ancestry does NOT make you part of that Nation. You are part of the Nation your are a citizen of, whose language you speak, and whose culture is engrained in you.

    This claiming to be 'other' nationalities appears to be an American peculiarity. If you are born in the US you are American. Irish is a nationality not an ethnicity. For example my mother IS Irish, but I was born and raised in England. That makes me English or British. I've taken the ancestry DNA test, and despite 75% of my DNA being from Irish antecedents it doesn't make me Irish. I was not born in Ireland, nor have I emigrated to Ireland. I have not lived in Ireland, nor do I claim to understand the Irish way of life. People of the USA you are not anything like your ancestors. You are not Irish, French, Italian, German, Russian, English etc... You are American. End of. Stop looking backwards and start looking forwards!
