Around the 9:00 mark where they discuss presidents being able to opt out of lifetime secret service protection... that's an option that shouldn't be available. Reason being is that when a person becomes the president, they understand that everyone knows they're privy to countless confidential national security briefings. After they leave office, and opting out of lifetime secret service protection, they'd be an incredibly easy target for someone vying for that information, and if they're threatened with violence or even death if they don't provide the confidential information to those who've taken them, they'd likely release it which could immensely weaken the nation's security.

For me the most incredible conclusion about these rules is that they are there to "protect the nation" rather than the former presidents themselves. You would never see these kind of rules in Europe, regardless of their past in history. That says a lot to me about the position the US projects themselves in the world.
Richard Nixon at times drove a vehicle on public roads while he was president. I personally saw him driving a vehicle in Palo Alto, California after he was out of office. It was a big black Cadillac. There may have been Secret Service agents in the car, but he was at the wheel. Palo Alto is where Stanford University is located. Many possible reasons why he could have been there. The location was on Alma Street past San Antonio Road in the northbound direction. Drove right by him. He looked straight ahead.

Just imagine, the entrancea of a library, a golden trump statue in his iconic posture and on the bottom: "I ve never seen a thin person drinking diet coke"
Because those things aren’t really a big deal if it means being president of, arguably, the most powerful nation on Earth, making you the most powerful person on Earth. The huge amount of prestige that comes along with the job is a perk too. Not to mention the fact that becoming president was probably their life goal, so it would seem silly to no longer want that just because of the rules in place when you leave, especially because the rules imposed on you while still in office are probably way more restricting.

I think that instead of letting former presidents opt out of getting secret service protection and hire their own private security, the government should offer more than one option for secret service detail. They can give the option of getting full protection, and then they can also give the option of getting partial/limited protection, where they let them do more things, and the president in question can choose what those things are. For example, I'd be fine with not driving a car ever again, but I'd hate never having any alone time, and I'm fine with agents snooping through all of my personal and private stuff, as long as they don't have any thoughts or questions about it, and are reading it for the sole purpose of securing my safety. Now, the can also still choose to not get any detail at all, but if you're like me, you'd probably opt to get the partial protection.

He lost that after he was impeached. Yet trump still has secret service.
Well the dude in this video said that Nixon gave up the Secret Security detail. So you probably saw him after he had decided to drop the protection

@@Sodapop-rd5ku Even while he was president, Nixon drove his own car sometimes. No president since has been allowed to do that.
