    The Brihadishwara Temple was built during the reign of the Chola emperor Raja Raja I in the 11th century. Construction of the temple began in 1003 CE and was completed in 1010 CE. It was designed by the renowned architect Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perunthachan. The temple was created as a royal monument to display the emperor's power, wealth, and devotion to Lord Shiva.
