I saw the film "West Side Story" (I like Natalie Wood) but have never been to any concert that featured "Westside Story" - what a pleasant surprise to see you. I came across one or two articles about "Westside Story" was Berstein raping Tchaikovsky. I supposed that's due to "Tonight" had something to do with Tchaikovsky "Romeo & Juliet" - perhpas thematic materials? I am more familiar with Prokoviev "Romeo & Juliet" (Margot Fonteyn & Rudolf Nureyev) but love Tchaikovsky "Nutcracker Suite"... and you also play the celesta!! You are quite near the Marinsky Theatre - perhaps you have played the celesta there for the "Sugar Plum Fairy"? Liked the way you played "America". I think playing piano part in Stravinsky is a lot more exciting than Bernstein.

Hello dear Ann-Kay! Thank you for reply. The plot really partly repeats the story of Romeo and Juliet, but the music is absolutely original and devoid of any borrowings.
The piano part here is quite interesting and allows the pianist to always be included in the process, which is valuable. I don't think it's correct to compare Bernstein's piano part with Stravinsky's. For example, in Petrushka, the task was to express a lot through the sound of the piano, because initially Petrushka was supposed to be a piece for piano and orchestra. In many of Stravinsky's other orchestral works, the piano part is much more modest.

@@chirskov Dear Ilea, What you said made me think. "Les Noces" was the first Stravinsky piece that I heard. I was bowled over by the 4 pianos and the musical sound/rhythm of the Russian language (e.g., vocal acciaccaturas). However, piano in Stravinsky's orchestral music is often a fantastic percussion instrument. "Petrushka" is exceptional - hence the brilliant version for the excellent Arthur Rubinstein. No doubt you have performed in "Firebird" (includes piano & celesta), and also in "Les Noces". Yes, in this symphonic "Westside Story" the piano is much engaged in expressing the music. Bernstein was a pianist and his works abound with jazz influences and rhythms, and you have an aptitude for this kind of music. Thank you for assuring me the work devoids borrowings from Tchaikovsky. Even if Berstein did, so what? "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini", the melodic inversion of the slow 18th variation is sooooo beautiful!
