@@martywollaston1146 If has one “gear” only and the ICE is purely a generator. No direct connection to the actual drivetrain so unfortunately a software update isn’t the answer.
@@marcusgeorge1825 Yes that seems so reasonable its not funny. I never thought of that lol. Thanks for kicking me down several levels of relevance. My main question is how can BYD fix this? Is there some form of gear reduction 'electronically' ? Probably not.
I love the shark concept. One question: If I am towing a 2.2-ton caravan long-distance, what happens if I am driving into a headwind or up a long uphill for, say, 10km? Will the battery go flat, and what impact will that have on the tow performance? Will the petrol motor keep up with the power used in towing?
My understanding is that the battery never fully depletes, rather it reaches a minimum state of charge and then uses the battery + the engine to power the car and keep the battery at that SOC. To answer your question properly, I'd dare say it can do. Will it keep doing it on a daily basis, probably not, but occasional trips like this should be ok. For example, my daily driver, an xtrail with lower power and torque figures allowed me to tow a 1900kg caravan with relative ease when travelling from Adelaide to Hanhdorf
Heard a guy say that going up mountains in Mexico with his New Shark ( not towing ) that the battery and motor struggled a bit ( only got slower speed ) because the driving required constant torque going up hill and difficult to keep up a constant charge , he stated to over come this problem was to set the battery level for regen at about 60% instead of the factory setting of 25% , keeping more juice in reserve for required torque .
@ it’s literally the first article from car advice that pops up on a google search when you search byd shark 3500kg towing upgrade Electric Viking mentioned the time of the update yesterday in one of his vids
If the you let the motor recharge while you drive, why worry about it. That’s why everyone’s interested. A EV range extenter that doesn’t need to be plugged in.
I would have preferred to see it with a 100 kWh battery and 500 km full electric range. Now it has a full engine to drive along with, which is additional technology and additional maintenance and failure points. Also because of the small battery it can charge 5 times slower than a normal EV
Sales prove otherwise. My wifes next car for local driving will be an EV. I'd never buy an EV where i needed to rely on Australias spotty and slow charging network when doing even moderate trips through regional areas.
Good to see another “review” of the Shark but why can’t all these channels (including CarExpert, Car Sales et al) bring themselves to say the quiet part out loud? i.e. that they are all inherently Toyota/Ford biased and anti-anything made in China. The Shark will compete on its own merits against Hilux, Ranger, Triton, DMax, Canon Alpha and those making up the numbers with sales, customer experience and after sales service ultimately deciding which is the better package.
Yeah agree regarding the servicing costs (I have ordered a shark) There is one at 48months for around $1700! It does involve a lot of fluid changes but that's a pretty eye watering number. I'm hoping the 12 month servicing requirement translates to reliability. We have a new defender, and paid approx $2500 up front for a service plan but the intervals are 34000km or 20 months which is ludicrous. We have had the engine oil changed between for peace of mind.
One big elephant in the room nobody seems to be talking about is the ridiculous weight of this thing. 2710kg stock as a rock without a driver in it, so it'll legally be able to carry maybe 600kg with a standard 3.5ton GVM and is only rated to tow 2.5ton. Want to chuck a canopy and a roof rack on, load up the wife and kids and go away for the weekend? You'd want to drive over the weighbridge first. Compare that to a new Navara which weighs 2030kg without a driver for a 4wd ST.
What state of charge was the battery to achieve 9 L/100 around town? Did the vehicle also consume battery charge during your drive? Some more detail on this would be helpful. Hybrids are different, and how they are used and charged will be the difference between zero fuel use and 14L/100 that Carsales claimed it achieved (which I would say is a complete misrepresentation of the facts given what they did to achieve that result, and now idiots are quoting it...)
Some other questions. In hybrid mode, when does the engine run? Does it give you a largish electric range before starting the engine for the first time (or can you configure it that way)? When the engine does start, does it get a chance to warm up fully (what is the sustained temperature)? Will the engine run periodically (say every 7 days) to burn off moisture buildup in the engine if you are only running on battery? On a steep descent, what can it achieve in regen in kws? Can it start the engine to assist deceleration (a feature useful when towing)? Can it sustain 50kw charge rate till full? At what charge can you disable the engine over 70kph? This is important if you have a short freeway commute to work and want to stay on battery, even at low charge. Will the engine run to top up the battery while stationary? under what conditions? I'll stop there. You can see hybrids are different and there is a lot of info to share about them.
Generic brands don't cost all that much. Don't forget they high in depreciation may be 50% or more in the first few years. Any spare parts in the futures? Will the started up new company really care about after sale service for the consumer? Generally ones must think carefully and wisely before putting hard earn money in buying. There are lots of abandoned vehicles parked along road kerbside, because of no parts and expensive repairs, and more. I'd just not rush in for a litttle while, be on a safe side.
I’ve read reviews where they have tested them over thousands of km’s and normal fuel use was 10 to 15 litres per hundred. That’s not towing anything either 🤣. Ok if your just running around town 🤣
What 4x4 that size with 430hp on tap will give you 9L/100 ? And things are still dependant on the hybrid settings you use and how you drive it. And that’s was without plugging in.
For the benefit of all non- Australian viewers, when you hear the man saying "Australia's most XXXX", he does not mean the car is Australian, rather, he only means "In Australia, it is the most XXX". Sorry for the confusion. It is a rather peculiar habit of Aussies; you see, when you do not manufacture any thing at the moment, calling something Australia's is a way of compensation. The car is Chinese made.
Why hype on the full LED lighting? LED's are ubiquitous these days, in fact they may be cheaper than non led lights. Just like how a black and white tv is more expensive to buy right now than a colour one.
I wonder how the build quality will hold up after 10 years. People are blinded by all the bling and forget that Chinese cars are built to a price, not to a standard.
The nineties are long gone. Many Chinese evs have 5 star safety ratings from Euro NCAP as well as ANCAP. Like BYD Seal, Sea Lion 6 and Dolphin. Try to keep up.
@kamsunleong6648 When I talk about standards, I'm more talking about quality of materials, build quality in general and long term reliability, rather than whether they get a 5 star ancap rating. As for the 90s, I know a few people who have bought Chinese work vehicles in the last 5 years that are constantly breaking down or needing work done on them. Also they depreciate in value a lot faster than the likes of Toyota, Mazda, Nissan etc.
I feel like this is a sponsored video, I would love for you to correct me if I am wrong. I love the BYB and have on on order, but I really like to know just how unbiased this review was.
People buy diesel utes because of their towing capacity. If an ute can provide a similar towing performance while being free from the DPF trouble, the order will be heaps of.

price is good. I wish that FORD, TOYOTA would price their utes more fairly. I bought a xlt with a 7k discount and still feels like I overpaid when I see the Triton and the BYD ute prices
I almost bought a demo XLT before I had heard of the Shark.. pretty much the same price as a Shark with way less features (albeit better 4x4 capability)
But still.. Ford have been taking the piss for 10 years

@@marcusgeorge1825 Yes that seems so reasonable its not funny. I never thought of that lol. Thanks for kicking me down several levels of relevance. My main question is how can BYD fix this? Is there some form of gear reduction 'electronically' ? Probably not.

What will be the interval service cost ? Has it been confirmed yet ?
Have a look on the BYD site. They have pricing per service available.
That is a good question Sir! I hope you get a professional answer to it.
if that is your daily drive just get a ranger.
Longest hill in the world!! It will drive using the ice
All well and good when its new lets see when it has been tried and tested for a couple of years
is it normal to see daylight between the edge of the tailgate and the quarter panel as seen at about 1330?
Yes most 4x4 tailgate are the same
The Tasman Ute looks so lame compared to this. It's a shame that the warranty and service costs are rubbish.
I'm with you on both issues. I would take a 5 year Unlimited Km over a 6yr/150000km anyday.

If the you let the motor recharge while you drive, why worry about it. That’s why everyone’s interested. A EV range extenter that doesn’t need to be plugged in.
@ Technically the BYD Shark is tour de force
im guessing it will use the engine/fuel more to recharge the battery
Is there a SUV version of this coming too ?
Leopard 5
I would have preferred to see it with a 100 kWh battery and 500 km full electric range. Now it has a full engine to drive along with, which is additional technology and additional maintenance and failure points.
Also because of the small battery it can charge 5 times slower than a normal EV
Sales prove otherwise. My wifes next car for local driving will be an EV. I'd never buy an EV where i needed to rely on Australias spotty and slow charging network when doing even moderate trips through regional areas.
@Johnno1979 they can use the fast and reliable Tesla charge network
forgot the HUD matty
Good to see another “review” of the Shark but why can’t all these channels (including CarExpert, Car Sales et al) bring themselves to say the quiet part out loud? i.e. that they are all inherently Toyota/Ford biased and anti-anything made in China. The Shark will compete on its own merits against Hilux, Ranger, Triton, DMax, Canon Alpha and those making up the numbers with sales, customer experience and after sales service ultimately deciding which is the better package.
Service costs are way higher than expected. Overall looks good
Yeah agree regarding the servicing costs (I have ordered a shark) There is one at 48months for around $1700!
Or just wait for it's SUV cousin - the Leopard 5 to arrive (if your brave enough to drive a 505kw SUV)
Hahaha who wouldn’t be brave enough for that 😟
What fuel does this use and how much is it
Petrol with electric. $57,900 plus on -roads
You know you can watch videos and these answers are in them??
It seems like a real winner but I have to see how it stacks up mileage and reliability wise.

@@therightcar usa missing out
One big elephant in the room nobody seems to be talking about is the ridiculous weight of this thing.
How heavy is your wife mate 🤪
@mitchelljack1590 Haha good one, you're not thinking of buying one of these are you?
you had me at 321kw
Yeah, nah ! 🙄🙄

"fake' leather v 'faux' leather!?
City car in a ute body.
I’ve read reviews where they have tested them over thousands of km’s and normal fuel use was 10 to 15 litres per hundred. That’s not towing anything either 🤣. Ok if your just running around town 🤣
The point is that you’ll use it with EV primarily and the engine can help out at other times.
Best pickup in Australia? No way
9l/100 is far from recommendable, especially for a hybrid. It's in city driving. Isn't that their forte?
It can drive pure EV for around 80km before you need to recharge.
I don’t think anyone is confused. My Aussie accent probably gives it away…
