They have nobes/zomes that deplete so if it runs out you move a good bit away and you find another. The nobes around towns are always very low on quanity so that you have to actually go out and get it from other sources.

You will get farther just running outside of town naked with a pick axe. Even if you get jumped once or twice as long as you make one good run you will make more faster.
