Finally someone speaks Leica so unbiasedly. Many people who got Leica M including me trying to say something great about Leica regardless of the fact that Leica images look not any better than any cheap digital cameras out there. Thus, basically saying amazing things just to justify the hefty price they paid to get the Leica camera. There's only one thing with Leica M only M (not absolutely dull Q, SL, CL...) and that's the wonderful experience of using the camera as it's very akin to a film camera and this weighs a lot 😁.

A large part of having a channel that people enjoy coming to is the personality of the presenter. In this case, the presenter (Nico) makes watching these videos a very pleasant experience. You can tell he is talking from the heart....and that he loves what he's doing. That is a big, big, draw to me. Keep the videos coming Nico.

I love the m10m. So much that I sold my m3 to help finance the m10m. The beauty of this camera, is just not the images it takes, but the ability to have the images much quicker than film. The 2nd reason is I no longer need to shoot a whole roll of film to see my images. And the build quality of the m10m is so good, you really don’t need to worry about harming it. I hike through the woods with mine.

I agree my friend. Glad to hear it's the same in the US. No lab does it as good as I do at home, when it comes to developing B&W. Not that I'm exceptionally good, but simply because none of them take the time and care needed to do it right. Most people can't tell because they never developed at home, but you're absolutely right. Man, what a relief to know I'm not alone :)

Thanks for talking about the M10 monochrome and your M2. I really enjoy your videos because they are heartfelt and enthusiastic. It’s interesting to see your perspective on digital. I started taking photography seriously again two years ago when I bought a Fujifilm X100v. Before that I had shot film from the 1980s until around 2004-6. The digital cameras are amazing, but they are like little photo-making robots. Delightful, but also so many features and things to figure out.

I am addicted to the smell of fixer. I just developed a roll of Fomapan black and white reversal film, and the thrill you get when you hold up to the light the positive images is what keeps me doing film

recently picked up photography again after years away, and went back to shooting film which is what i always shot because back then i wasn't very happy with digital cameras (about 10 years ago now) i started shooting again but then started to really realize the underlying problems with shooting film, between price increases, rarity of development places and stock availability, as well as other friction points, the novelty of shooting film again started to wear off and i was more so faced with just the problems.
I decided on getting a small digital camera as a companion to my film shooting, something i could easily carry anywhere for more casual shooting, i opted to get a ricoh GR3 as it fit the budget well and i was truly blown away by the results. really showed me that modern digital cameras can really produce great image quality taht would ultiamtely give me more satisfaction than my film shots (which was never the case before)
and the price that camera cost me when broken down by 35mm film roll costs (for buying and developing and scanning) came to about 22 rolls of film. a truly shocking realization and it really made me reconsider my priorities when it comes to photography.
I do miss using a more traditional camera body when i use the GR3 but i also really dislike modern digital cameras and the plethora of features and dials they have, makes for a very noisy setup. which is what makes me really desire going into the digital leica world, not only does it produce fantastic results, the digital cameras behavee almost entirely like their counterpart film cameras with the most simplistic designs stripping away everything that is non essential.
unfortunately the price of a modern leica digital body is incredibly high for my budget so i need to save up quite a bit to get one but one day i hope to go that route. in the mean time i'm going to be occasionally shooting the rest of my film stock when special occasions arise, and shoot everything else with the GR3 and my old DSLR

I think a lot of us face this dilemma…my Pakon died, going through my last rolls of tri-x and really considering to go digital. The cost and time implied with film is becoming hard to justify as a hobbyist BUT I get you about the camera, I could not let go of my black paint M4.

Shooting with a Leica since I was 16-years old, and that is now over 50-years ago. Yes, worked and saved my money, and never doubted my decision of gear choice. It’s just what I use. At some point the undeveloped rolls started accumulating, time and money. So, maybe naturally I got my first digital Leica, an M9. Then my ‘ideal’ camera came with the original monochrom used in a trade years later (fairly low cost). It is like a continuous roll of B&W, my older Leitz lenses seem better than ever, frees me from the film development time and daily cost, and just getting the images on my computer is just quick and easy. With getting an expensive camera it is always a matter of trade-offs or justifying your reasons. I’ve never lost money on reselling a Leica camera or lens till the M9, which after 10 years of use I still sold for over half the price I bought it new for (and are actually going up in price since that sale). Wish I could afford or justify a M10M if just for that film size M-series feel, but the old monochrom will do just fine. There is something special about using a monochrom camera. If you don’t understand that, that’s OK. And, at least for me there is something special about using a Leica too. BTW, I take care of my cameras but don’t worry about ‘babying’ them. The like-new used Leica SL I bought after selling the M9 and missing color is a real throw in the bag and use in all conditions camera and starting to show it, doesn’t take anything away from it, and it and the monochrom will probably be with me till they die an electronics death.

I agree with your decision. This has been on my radar but just can’t justify the cost. If i was to sell all my gear I could easily get a nice kit but I suffer from too much gas and enjoy the choices of picking what camera to shoot. Great video as always 👍🏻

I bought the first Leica M Monochrom (CCD) in the spring, and I've had way too much fun with it. The old lenses look very good, and those that look bad in colour look even better than regular lenses in true B&W. And I have the same problem with the B&W film you have, I have a fridge full of exposed film.

I went Leica digital 2 years ago and absolutely love them. I have the M10 mono, M246, and S007. I do not have a Leica film - yet. I have the Mamiya 7ii for film and love that. I’ve had a few other systems in the pat like Canon and Fuji. For me it’s not even close, Leica rules. Indeed it’s the experience just like they say. And I also want to say Leica does not scream look at me. Canon with the bazooka lenses says that. I’ve been in people’s faces and they have never said oh look you have a Leica. That’s BS. Also, for all of the Instagram people, print out a M10 mono file. You’ll see.

I bought a used black M10 in a decent (has some brassing on the edges already) condition for a really good price a while ago, it is a joy to use and the results are outstanding, certainly good enough for everything I do. I have no doubts the Monochrome will be even better for black & white. If I could afford to also own the M10 Monochrome, I would go for it. Maybe in a another couple of years…

i felt the same way about damaging my m10 screen after a shirt button broke the screen protector, a leather half case with magnetic screen cover solved that issue for me and i since stopped thinking about it when i take the camera out for the day.

To me what made my m10m to trully shine, was when I covered the screen with gaffer tape. Since that day it has remained covered and I shot it like my M6. Before it almost felt like I was using a ricoh

@@NicosPhotographyShow the feeling is similar to film. Once every other week I check the SD card and I see the images for the first time.
You can do this on camera without using the tape but I was always turning it on to check things that are not necessary.

I don’t find this rationale against the M10M versus film convincing:
    1. The (legitimate) reason for babying the M10M in this instance is that is was a loan camera for resale. In practice, the M10M is a tank and wouldn’t need to be babied if you owned it, any more than your M2 does.
    2. The financial argument presumes that the value of the M10M will decrease to zero versus the cost of 500 rolls, which of course it won’t. The Monochroms in particular hold value well, and this is a false comparison.
    3. While your M10M images have already been published, the 100 rolls of exposed film are still awaiting development let alone printing or scanning. So in practice the M10M gave you photographs whereas the film process is yet to deliver (within the limits of a real human life).
I love my film cameras but this is exactly why I must regard making a film photograph an expensive luxury compared with a digital image, and I too have dozens of rolls that have been developed but are yet to be either transformed into prints or scanned.

I agree with all points, I dont always make sense to others or myself. I feel like I should have gotten the M10M but ended up with an M10P, still trying to get along with it as its my first digital camera in 15 years.

  • @TheLDunn1

Try and get an M10-D to try out.
It has the faux wind on lever….granted you can’t ‘wind on’ with it, but it does feel very nice and secure in the hand and ‘old school film days’ feel.
It doesn’t have an LCD to get scratched up.
It is more of an ‘iso, shutter speed, aperture, focus’ camera, that you desire.
Granted it’s not mono….but by retaining colour info, it does give you greater options in post (if you want them).
The only aspect that I don’t care for much (& this probably goes equally to other Leica digitals) is the way the exposure info is conveyed in the viewfinder. You just get a red dot indicating what the camera thinks is correct exposure, or a left/right arrow indicating over/under exposure….it gives no indication of how far over under you are. I’ve shot with many different old film SLR’s in the past, as well as DSLRs and Mirrorless, and many give a meter reading that indicates how far over / under you are..even simple cameras like Olympus OM1 for example give this. Talking of which, I still feel the OM4/OM3 metering system, the way it conveys it in the viewfinder is hard to beat….but also modern mirrorless are also great in that you don’t even need a meter reading as such, because you can set them up to show the actual image as too dark / too bright as you look at it, so don’t even need to look at a meter reading.

From an ROI perspective, you have made a reasonable calculous but I would encourage you to consider a couple of additional points that you didn't really game out. One thing about the M10M is that at night, the camera is an absolute ISO beast. You can shoot action in ambient light in a way you just can't with film, even with something like Ilford 3200. the images are clean and fairly free of noise even in ISO's like 12800 etc., I feel this opens up all kinds of photographic possibilities not available on film, and certainly not with such fidelity.
Film is bad for the Earth environmentally. All those chemicals end up somewhere and it's better overall to find ways to reduce that. With that said, I shoot film too, but very limited and in part because of what I have just referenced, despite its asthetic appeals. Making digital pcb boards for a camera is bad too, so no easy answers I guess.
The M10M with vintage lenses, such as your 8 element, does deliver stunning images. I use a Light Lens Lab 35mm f2 with an 8 stop variable ND filter and I am just blown away by the results - the glow is pronounced, as is the vignetting, which may not be such a joy for some. I bought the M10M on the day it was released, opting for it instead of the previous mono versions because like you, I though they were bulky and ergonomically unfriendly.
Good, thoughtful video and nice images.

In the end it’s all about the image. I have moved my color 35mm equivalent to digital. I still shoot 35mm black and white on my Nikon F2 and F3. I still shoot most of my film in medium format and large format. I find 35mm is becoming too expensive and tiring in developing and scanning.
With 35mm color film, I pay 20.00 a roll of 35mm for film, developing costs a lot even if you do it yourself.
Between film, developing and scanning, it’s going to run at least .75 cents a frame. Scanning a roll of 35mm on a flatbed scanner can take alot of time. Slide film has really gotten expensive as well.
The advantages of shooting film in medium format and large format to me make more sense. The quality is better than 35mm and many digital cameras, you are scanning fewer frames and it’s truly more slowed down. With large format one gets many of the controls and movements which are another bonus.

I thought for many years that it was a nonsense to pay more to shoot only B&W. Indeed, I shoot with a M262 and can easily change my pictures in B&W with LR. But at the end I bought a M10M few days ago in addition to my current body because this sensor has features none has, notably dynamic range, low light shooting abilities and palet of grey tons. Sometimes color is the best option. But sometimes, B&W is sufficient in itself. Having both is the solution 🙂
NB : I buy all my Leica gear used, body and lenses ; and actually it's like new, but half the price.

How about spending $5500 on a brand new M6. How is that logical, when you have to add film costs and development/scanning costs on top of this. In that situation, the digital M is cheaper overall.

    • @NicosPhotographyShow
      @NicosPhotographyShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

One could say so, you are buying new so the actual life of the M6 has been 40 years for most of them, in 40 years the price of the digital one will be gone, but if you add the price of film, dev, CLAs etc, its all a balance on what one does want. I like having negatives archived and enjoy the darkroom, but if you dont the digital M makes a lot of sense.

I fully disagree, if one is serious about photography. I have an M10M and it is scratched, dented, scuffed, and worn after two and a half years of continuous use. When paired with he right lenses it delivers results out of camera unlike any other. Even if I planned to sell it, I don't see the need to baby it.
