7:49 I believe the way the 'lightgun' works is by matching the timing of the trigger to where the current monitor refresh is (data it get's from the ULA?), so that flicker pattern is probably showing where that point is on each trigger press! (This is from what little I remember from reading a lightgun manual many years ago!!)
Wonderful! I had great fun recognising where all your theme tune sound effects came from. It's the best episode yet and the addition of a co-presenter suggests that the show is growing...
10:16 Unfortunately the design of light-gun didn't allow for real-time aiming short of a laser pointer taped to the gun. The flicker is due to the design also. When the trigger is pushed the screen is replaced with a mono screen where the "misses" are the black areas and the "Hits" are white bounding squares around the hitable sprites. The gun then measures the brightness of what it is pointed at and then sends back a signal to the game whether you were pointed at a white "Hit" box or not.
This is not enough to distinguish between more targets. When trigger is pulled, machine code rutine start putting white pixels from upper left When gun see white, it send signal to computer where software get signal and know how many pixels was plotted, so it know where is gun pointed. In video you can see that white area is ending every time where gun is pointed. Because computer know where gun is and no need to put another white pixels.
Another nice one there Paul. I think the games tips section is a great idea, most of these games haven't been played in so long I welcome any tips on them. Demo of the month is great as well, the rest of the sections we're good too. :) a great episode yet again. :)
Fantastic video, as usual - enjoyed the new Intro, brilliant, definitely keep that one, its your best yet, and the new contents were great additions to already great show. Keep em coming my friend, and look forward to many more. Thank you.
The new intro doesn't please everyone. May change it a bit for next episode - going back to the old intro music at the very least. People seem to like that :-)
+Paul Jenkinson Hi Paul I like the intro and the old one and have to say after watching some of your shows a huge thank you totally amazed how professional they are and I feel cheated when the show ends lol as I become engrossed with your presentation skills and interesting content of the show , I hope you stay around for a long time and surely you should be covering the spectrum as a tv program because this is brilliant and would be well worth the license money ,best wishes Brian.
Glad to see the new series, and like the updated format, as even more professional than before, which was already top notch. Only a matter of time before your show is on the BBC, just before the 6 o'clock news mayeb :-)
I remember a few shows back that you did some games on the Speccy and wondered if you still are programming for it or still would like to as there is a game jam called Speccy Jam starting at the end of this month. Link here: www.speccyjam.com/
Great show! When will you be covering The Living Daylights lightgun? That was the big pack to rival the c64 bundles and it sold lots of spectrums I'm sure. I only played the very tricky c64 version with a joystick, and not very well. As for handling the light gun, sit and use a knee as a platform at normal level to the screen. Aiming downwards from a stance is tiring as you say.
Super show my friend really enjoyed it and cant wait for more as my zx spectrum 48k arrives this week and I am so excited after watching your show and knowing in a few days time I I will be the proud owner of one after all these years of waiting and I am 62 yrs old now lol
Interesting show as usual. I admit that as a kid I enjoyed playing Pole Position in the local arcade. Wasn't any good at it but loved playing it. I was very disappointed with the Speccy version. Whilst an arcade perfect port was never going to happen they could have made a better effort than this. I still think the best racer of this type on the Speccy is Continental Circus (and I have a soft spot for Chequered Flag) but I would love to have seen 3D Grand Prix (the Amstrad version) or Pitstop 2 make it to the Speccy.
Paul Jenkinson I would be very interested in your take on Speccy ports of established 16 bit games. For example the port of Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge. Personally I think in their determination to get as close graphically as they could to the 16 bit big cousins they lost out on the most important factor: speed. I find the Lotus game on the Speccy impossibly slow to the point of nearly unplayable. A feature on that, I suppose the notion of were certain games simply wrong to try and port to the Speccy, or wrong in the way they were ported, could make for an interesting discussion.

Oh my word!! The first type-in I recognise - Foxbat! Thanks for that bolt from the blue :)
Today I've learned that the purple rooms in Alien 8 are tougher.

Or tucked away on a cable channel at 2 in the morning. Either way I would be happy :-)
Thank you very much.

Yes, just released Kyd Cadet 3. Will look into the jam...

I thought that was the one in the Sinclair pack - the standard Sinclair/Magnum version?
I remember this !

+mrmusdtard2 Excellent. Enjoy it my friend.
I've got 4 light guns and 8 games, but I can't find a cheap working CRT ! LOL.
Oh to be able to get back to Aug 85 to buy a brace or 5 of QL and assorted software.
Interesting show as usual.

Yeah, I like racing games, so expect some more reviews in this series (hopefully).

good lad!
Wrong the first light gun arcade game was quack by atari in 1974
You lost me when you mentioned those "not true Spectrum's" in the demo section, what they be then?
Pentagon and Scorpions mainly. Not released by Sinclair or Amstrad. Great machines, but not true Spectrum as a purist may see them.
Thanks. I have had chance to replay the video so I could listen again to the names and then went on a Google quest! :)
Power Station in Slough? What
That's what the inlay says.. :-)
Paul Jenkinson Then they are going to take over Croydon Mecca Bingo lol
Pole Position: back when cigarettes and alcohol were advertised all over the place
