I’m thinking the immersive sound audio improvements and adaptive suspension dampening… I would definitely pay for these upgrades in addition to some type of off-road/winter package (raised suspension, all terrain wheels and tires, skid plates and maybe vented seats, etc.).

    Any progress reports on the 4680 battery production?

    • @Nicholas.T
      @Nicholas.T 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glen, last available public update was from Tesla’s earnings call in July, where Musk and Baglino admitted to the on-going engineering problems with volume production of the 4680 cells, which will result in a (hopeful !) start to such production around the middle of next year. They hope to have an “annual” rate of cell production of between 50-100 GWhrs by the end of 2022.

    • @glenmattson3765
      @glenmattson3765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nicholas.T I was wondering if any of the attributed part shortages are due to the 4680 batteries not being available? Are the model X, Cyber truck also delayed do to the lack of 4680 cells. I have not every seen component shortages take a whole year to resolve before so was wondering if "part shortages" might be a blanket term that includes 4680 production startup problems.

    Wow, the new tmS !
    The new HUD looks really good, at last.
    The rear entertainment system with 10” screens for each passenger is great, especially the detachable touch screen controller.
    The electric blinds on the rear window and all rear door glass is great for privacy as well.
    I must say, the massaging seats are a great addition to this car.
    Finally, a sun glasses holder above the driver, I am really happy about that one.
    The pop up table that comes out of the rear fold down arm rest is great.
    The inbuilt fridge with the wine bottle holder makes for a pleasant evening in the car as well.
    Tesla has finally put in automatic opening and full soft closing doors, about time.
    I really like the fact that the rear seats are now fully electrically adjustable as well.
    Great idea putting the buttons in the back to allow the front passenger seat to be moved out of the way when no one is sat in it for more leg room.
    It’s good that Tesla has managed to get the rear seat space to give better support on the leg thigh - they’ve stopped the problem of the low seat height causing bum ache in the rear of the car.
    Oh, and finally putting in door pockets, took them a while to do it, but at least they are there now.
    Its great that the software now provides wifi hotspot in the car so the kids in the back can use the internet on their iPads.
    The full support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now allows owners to use Waze for Satnav and have multi-waypoint routing, a great new feature that is now supported.
    Tesla are actually getting their act together and finally stopped churning out cheaply made skateboards that they sell at stupidly high prices and making a car 🚗 😀

    That MIT study is a big "yeah no shit" except the part where they talk about people not looking "at the road" which is a big "yeah that's literally the point" When you're on AP and looking ahead you're never looking "at the road" you're looking at all the cars, people, and objects to the sides. That's literally the whole reason it allows you to be safer when paying attention than without the system; because you can be looking at all the other actors in a scene rather than focused on line following.

    Wish we knew what the plan was for the Y battery pack coming out of Texas.
    I'd pay more to get a LR+ with 4680 cells giving 400 miles of range

    • @Nicholas.T
      @Nicholas.T 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do Sheldon !! It’s in their publicly stated back up plan (announced during the July earnings call).
      The volume production of the 4680 cells have been delayed until (hopefully !) the 2nd half of next year because of engineering problems with their manufacture.
      In the meantime, according to the backup plan, initial production of Y’s out of Austin (and Berlin) will be with the existing 2170 cells in a NON-STRUCTURAL battery pack, BUT with front and rear castings. The production line will convert over to the new 4680 cells when those cells are ready. But of course, we won’t have an exact timeframe because, predictions notwithstanding, they don’t know when those engineering issues will be resolved.
      BTW, Tesla have made NO mention of a 400 mile model Y. It’s just pure speculation by the Tesla community, based on the 4680 cells having a greater weight/capacity ratio and lower cost per KWhr. Tesla may actually decide to keep the highest range at around the current 320 miles, and use the greater capacity/cost benefits of the 4680’s to reduce the weight and number of cells required in the longe range version, and increase their profit margin from the vehicle at the same time.

    • @Orion801airsoft
      @Orion801airsoft 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nicholas.T 100% agree that reducing the number of batteries to reduce weight and keep the same 320 mile range is the best option, to not cause issues with people ordering etc.
      But I'm hoping for a LR+ option.
      Willing to pay more for it.
      Then I'd add the towing option to it too.
      I didn't realize the 4680 in the Y was that far out. Guess I'll get my 3rd Y in Jan. And plan on getting a 4th at the end of '22
      Thanks for the info.

    • @Nicholas.T
      @Nicholas.T 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Orion801airsoft There’s no doubt a 400 mile option would be awesome, particularly for towing as you state, and also for those in very cold climates, where range can suffer by up to 20-25%
      Also provides a nice extra buffer for all owners, as the battery inevitably ages and starts to lose some of its range(as all batteries do)

    I don’t agree with Tesla’s marketing push on autopilot being 10x safer on a pathway to FSD. It’s technically 10x safer only with 100% human attention. I’m more interested in learning how much safer it is without human attention vs human drivers and How that’s progressing to FSD

It does semi stupid stuff pretty regularly that requires a human to intervene. I'm not sure how you can be behind the wheel and just watch it drive into an emergency vehicle. Sounds like some got drunk and trusted auto-pilot to take care of them.

      tbh the mercedes approach of monitoring driver attention with cameras seems just straight up better to me. holding the steering wheel doesnt indicate much at all, and its really showing that this approach just isnt enough to stop people from misusing the system.

    • @justinmurray9854
      @justinmurray9854 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drkastenbrot I would rather not hold the wheel either. It gets annoying. The Eye approach seems to be better for both the driver, and for monitoring awareness. • @drkastenbrot
      @drkastenbrot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinmurray9854 The interior cam is sadly not up to the task, its designed to monitor the interior for some autonomous taxi concept. Its a cheap addition, and not very high end and it doesnt really offer that much data on driver attention. The approach mercedes and others are taking is infrared cameras in the instrument cluster which can pinpoint where you are looking and ensure proper attention. Its quite a bit more costly than just the wheel (the wheel is literally free due to the power steering electronics already present).

      @@carholic-sz3qv My exact point is it doesn't matter. As long as a system is safer in general you should encourage that system not discourage it and make it more expensive. Individual cases that clearly brake the law should be punished accordingly to make the system even safer.
      Its like saying some people will wrap the seatbelt around their neck this means we have to make a monitoring system so people dont do that.
      Statistics is all that matters in case of regulations not individual cases. You can have people close their eyes while driving or put a brick on an accelerator as well does that mean that before you can have a car you have to have a monitoring system as well?
