    A full review of the new Lee Quick Trim brass case trimmer perfect for reloaders. Check out my other reloading videos as well as my vids on the Deuce and a half. Welcome to my channel BC's Deuce and Guns.
    FYI - I get a lot of questions regarding resizing after trimming and I'd like to make a blanket statement. For best accuracy trimming after resizing will give you the most consistent case length. The cases I was prepping at the time I made this video were intended for 3-gun so minute of man was really all I needed in the accuracy dept. When making 3-gun ammo I trim before sizing because I use a progressive press for my .223. The case will still be safe to shoot when trimming before resizing unless you have some custom barrel with a super short throat. I was simply in the trim before size mind set from using a progressive press at the time of filming and I hope this answers the many questions I get.

    I think you need to resize first before you trim since firing doesn’t really stretch the brass, but resizing after firing causes it to grow.

    I absolutely love this tool. A couple of things I figured out. First every 25 rounds stop and clean out the die. Blow it out from the bottom with some compressed air. Make sure you’re blowing from the right end. I use an old cereal box to catch the shavings. You don’t want to blow oil into the area that holds the case. Second is to wipe the case holder every so often because if you get shavings on the base. It will cause you to cut at a different length. Bought the adapter so I can use a cordless Drill / screw driver. The Black &Decker model is perfect for this. The handle can be on an angle so it looks like a drill. But it also can be straight up and down. Which is what you want for using it with this cutter. That way the weight of it is balanced. Lastly is to run the ram up. Then press down on the cordless screw driver. Other wise if you press the screw driver down first. Then ram the case in it will cause the blades to bend. Did that once. This tool is a huge time saver for me. And the cordless drill really speeeds things up.

    I have this and discovered that you need to measure every case. I ran it per the instructions and found some of my cases over the maximum case length. This trimmer is way better than the hand one that comes with the challenger kit, but I highly recommend you measure your cases after trimming with this.

      You have to wipe off the case holder with your finger each time. One small chip will cause case to be to different lengths.

      once I got it dialed in and used the length adjuster the "correct" way, I found it really consistent. I use the drill version now. I use it on new brass to get a little more chamfer.

    I never saw him check the length of the case. I know you can adjust the die to get the right case length. I use the old style trimmer he show's but chuck it up in a drill press and just slip the case over and hold up. very quick and uniform. always size first and clean primer pockets first inside and out to get it all uniform. Thats just the bench rest shooter in me but I like to be accurate as possible.

    Good review, sci. I prefer the ZipTrim with a 3-Jaw Chuck, however after several hundred trimmed cases, the tip on the Case Guage (the little do-dickey that sticks through the primer hole) begins to mushroom-out (gauge shirinking) due to it spinning/pressing up against the Case Guage stop (on the ZipTrim), causing the subsequent cases to trim to a shorter and shorter length. Eventually I will need to replace my Case Guages. For me, this is more of a problem with larger cases (30-06, 8x56R, etc) than with smaller cases (.223, 6.5x55, etc). With this mushrooming in mind, the Quick Trim seems to offer a more consistent trim length. Though, I see some folks have commented that this is not the case (pun intended).

    I let the necks grow as far as the chamber allows (10-15thou under max chamber length)
    I check the chamber by taking a fired case, cutting off half of the neck, keeping the top half that I cut off aside, I resize the cut case... I insert a projectile, then I take the top half of the the neck that I cut off and slip it over the projectile at the start of the bearing surface... I chamber the dummy round and while the bolt pushes forward and closes.... the top half of the neck slips back towards the case... I eject the the dummy round and measure how far the split neck sits from the base of the case. Doing this I know for each of my firearms the actual max safe case length... as so happens I never need to trim anymore... example... SAAMI spec for max case length for the 308win is 2.015" while the chamber in my 308 allows for 2.050" so I let them grow to 2.035" before I trim giving myself a 0.015" room to spare for safety.
    Yeah, I Hate Trimming, deburring and chamfering.

    Good vid. If you look at what's included in the Quick Trimmer, how well it's made, and how good of a job it does, I don't understand how they can sell it for $20. I have the crank trimmer too if I want to be dead nuts on length. I still haven't found a trimmer that is reliably perfect. I tend to sort my trimmed cases to 2 lengths after cutting, one for perfect and one for any that are a bit shorter, then resize and trim the short ones again. Works really well for me. BTW, I'm not seeing any measurable chrono differences between cases as long as they're within tolerances. YMMV.

    You trimmed it before you sized it? Isn't that kind of ass-backward? You trim because both shooting and resizing lengthens the case.

    This is ok I guess, but I use the first trimmer you showed and chuck the case holder into my variable speed cordless drill instead of holding it in my hand as you did. This way I trim in approximately 2 seconds, then debur and chamfer in 2 more. Much faster than the new $20 crank gizmo and a LOT less work.

    • @mcloon
      @mcloon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Plus you can clean up the case with steel wool at the same time if needed.

      3M pads also work well. No steel splinters.

    • @wadepage7809
      @wadepage7809 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No polish on the pads. I tumble the brass after sizing and trimming. I will swage and clean primer pockets and flash holes if need at this time also. Then tumble clean. I put a teaspoon or two of liquid Turtle Wax in the corn cob media when new and blend it in thoroughly. That way the brass comes out clean AND polished. Also keep the corn cob media clean longer by throwing a couple of used dryer sheets in with the brass. After tumbling, pull out and throw the dryer sheet away with all the dirt it picked up. Hope this helps!

      I trim .300 blackout and .30 carbine using the drill and cutter with wood ball. I works great for me. It would be nice if Lee made a chamfer for the old tool as well but, as someone mentioned, it only take a second. A mechanic's glove on the hand that you use to tighten the case in makes things go faster.

    Don't you need to resize the case before you trim? The case gets longer when you full length resize, and you're using mixed, random brass that will stretch different lengths when you resize.

    I chuck mine into a drill to trim then use steel wool to chamfer...very carefully. The benefit of the steel wool is it cleans off a lot of the carbon. Be careful so you don't get cut and it works well and quickly. May check into this later. I am disappointed Lee did away with the Auto prime II that mounted on my ram. I will continue use old 20+ year old one until it breaks.

  • @williambatie8179
    @williambatie8179 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just purchase this for 30-06, 233/5.62 and 45 ACP. First off, because I use RCBS X-Dies which greatly reduce the need to re-trim (for my Garand M1 eliminates it because M1s are hard on brass). This lead to the first problem, the X-Dies require a trim to 0.020" under. This thing is only adjustable to 0.010" under. They could have added another 10 click on the adjustment and have it compatible with the hottest selling die set. Unless you enjoy trimming get a X-die sizer and use your current bullet seater (save few dollars).
    Now I go to trim 0.010" under and it takes a good two (2) minutes and 200 to 300 turns to get a good trim (3/4 of the time). Therefore, each case has to be checked with a head space gauge and those still suspected of being to long with a micrometer.
    An email from Lee customer service, as is usual with Lee criticizes me for wanting to trim 0.020" off because it's unsafe (WHAT?). If you don't really care about the actual trim length, or taking hours, buy this. Remember, inexpensive cost to much! Buy something else in the $100 - $120 range it's cheaper! My opinion, I may be wrong.

      Sorry to hear about that, the Quick Trim is a one size fits most kind of item but it looks like it's not going to fit your needs very well. If you plan on doing a ton of 30-06 and 5.56 trimming then I'd suggest the Trim-it case trimmer. It's just about infinitely adjustable and it's as fast as your hands and drill can go. It's what I now use for my 5.56, 30-06, and 300 blkout. Here is my review. Trim-It Case Trimmer Review

    That's bad ass. I am definitely with you; The "old way" is bullshit compared to this. I tried the Zip Trim, it was okay. I've done the drill method using the ball, I've done it purely by hand until my hands cramped. And I almost spent $130 on some electric "case prep center" until I saw this. Anybody that is okay with chucking pieces into their drill, re-tightening the case holder over and over again after their cases starts wobbling, and performing 3 different steps to prep one case, obviously doesn't load much volume. Thanks for the video!!!!

      you are correct, generally you want to re-size then trim

    • @KJ4SQP
      @KJ4SQP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What stretches cases is being fired. Generally a eound seats in the chamber by the shoulder stoping at the front bevel then when it is fired the case expands to the maximum distance between the bevel of the chamber and the front of the extracter/front of the bolt. The way we overcome this is by trimming the few ten thou off the neck.

  • @larrymor
    @larrymor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have two different chamberings to load for the cost is already at $53.00 plus tax. May as well buy one of the regular crank trimmers that works on many different cartridges and is adjustable.

    When initially setting up in your breech lock bushing do you need to adjust the die up or down to get the correct overall length desired after trimming?

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's actually not necessary. Simply screw it all the way in so the shell holder will bottom out. The trim length adjustment on the top of the die will provide a small amount of adjustment. FYI - As someone else mentioned the amount of trim length adjustment is not that great so if you're planning to go way outside the box for a specialty type round I'd suggest the Trim-it case trimmer in my other video. It works, but the shavings build up inside the die making it ineffective after 10-20 cases. With the lock and load bushings it's easy to just remove the whole thing and dump it every 10 rounds. No compressed air required or brass shavings everywhere. Having said that, I will likely upgrade to the Dillon power trimmer or possibly the Frankford arsenal trim station.

    You know the old lee trimmer you had there with the wood ball on the handle is much faster then that new unit. You just aren't using it rite. Take the ball off, then screw the small rod that gos in the primer pocket out of the cutter. Screw the rod back in with some lock tite on the threads, only screw in as far as it takes to where the rod bottoms in the case head at your set length. Let set. Now chuck the cutter in the drill and put cases in and off as they trim. This works very well. I have done many thousands of rounds with the same one. Very accurate and very fast. They pull off and on like butter. Just make sure your drill is going in the cutters direction.

    Another added bonus to the Lee Quick Trim system: say you got ahead of yourself and made the mistake of priming your cases BEFORE you checked the length and they exceed the max of 1.760"? What to do??? Well, with the older Lee system with the primer pocket pilot method, you'd have to somehow SAFELY deprime all your cases, wasting precious components that are very hard to come by-RIGHT NOW (09/20)!!! With the Quick Trim, you CAN trim PRIMED cases safely-although I'd be very careful not to leave any shavings in the case that might block the primer hole. Don't ask HOW I know this. I'm looking at the classic cast vs your breech lock classic cast for precision loading but I'm worried about play in the breech system. At minute 4:46 when the ram touches the die I can see upward movement in the breech/die assembly and that makes the (Redding Big Boss) people swearing that you need a solid die-press connection smile. What's your experience with both of them for precision? How badly does the breech system move while pressure is exerted from underneath? Thank you.

      There is some movement but it's repeatable and a non-issue. The dies are setup with the ram fully extended with all slack out of the system. Could there be a slight accuracy impact between a property setup breach vs. screw-in die setup? Of course, but at that point you're in the 600+ meter territory swapping in new barrels every 1,500rds due to throat erosion.

    I have reloading dies to reload 223, 30 carbine, and 9mm. I wanna get this system for trimming my brass, but should I only get the die bodies for rifle rounds or should I get them for pistol as well?

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had an issue where by pistol brass has required trimming from normal use so I really don't consider it necessary. While admitting that I've never reloaded 30 carbine I'd be surprised if trimming was very necessary due to it being a straight wall case. The .223 brass on the other hand can rarely go over 2 reloads without requiring a trim. So my recommendation is that the .223 die is a must have, the 30 carbine is a strong maybe but probably not as important, and the 9mm (I'm assuming 9x19 AKA 9mm Luger) not necessary at all unless you are using the brass for unusual project loads or competing in target competitions. Good question.

    I guess I'm missing something because it seems to me with this new product you have to run the cases through the press twice. 1st to size then again to trim. I apologize but I don't see a time savings.
    If I'm wrong please correct me.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct that it'll require a resize but when reloading it'll always require a resize. If a case requires trimming then it'll always require trimming in some form or fashion. I personally find this faster to use than the old Lee case trimmer even when the brass is chucked into a drill because it takes more time chucking the brass vs. throwing the brass into the case holder on the press. I will say that I've moved my high volume reloading (5.56 and .300 blkout) to the EZ-trimmit device but the quick trim is still the best/fastest method I've found to turning 9x19 brass into 9x18 MAK brass. That was a good question thanks for watching.

      There's a collar to adjust it. Max setting will get you to the minimum trim length in the load books, then you can back it off from there if you don't want to trim down to the minimum length. I can never get these to give me consistent brass length. Every case comes out different for me. Maybe I got a bad one...

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly my stance as well. There are better (and WAY more expensive) options out there. I consistently get a length +-0.001 as long as I make sure I don't rush it and don't go too long as to let the deburr/chamfer blades continue cutting. For extreme precision I'd recommend the flat version and then deburr/chamfer by hand. Checkout my more recent video testing the powdered version of this trimmer. th-cam.com/video/3BHSVTLfUD4/w-d-xo.html&feature=iv&src_vid=UUCejrfzcFE&annotation_id=video%3A316b8063-0fec-4d12-bea3-c67bae937aa8

    Make sure you clean off case lube, otherwise die gets contaminated and will not grip cases. Cases will spin and cutter will just sit on case and not cut.
    I also remove the primer arm on my press and fill the slot with some tissue paper to keep shavings from getting into this area. I do this because the shavings were getting into the press body and making hard to raise and lower the ram. The little plastic shaving catcher did not prevent this.

    • @rwcraver

      I've had problems with case spin, even with clean, dry cases and die cleaned with brake cleaner. After sizing with lanolin/alcohol I have tried boiling them in a pot of soapy water, rinse and dried them in the oven at 220F about an hour, not hot enough to anneal. Squeaky clean, if only a little discolored. Still spin. #$%^&*
      I finally gave up and went back to the case length gauge and trimmer method, it just works every time.

    So this is basically about just squaring the mouth of the brass case so it's uniform all the way around and not lop sided where one side is taller or longer then the other, or is it actually about the length of the brass as well? How do you know when this is needed? Thanks I am a beginner so forgive the multiple questions.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to apologize for the multiple questions because everyone was new at some point. While having a uniform case mouth is important it should already be like that unless the brass had been damaged then I just toss it. The reason behind sizing brass is because all bottle neck brass cases will stretch while resizing during the reloading process. A bottle neck case is anything that necks down for the bullet such as this .223 or a 30-06 etc. but straight wall brass such as a 9mm Luger or .45 ACP doesn't stretch or stretches so little it's not an issue for the life of the brass in most cases. Eventually, the brass gets so long that it starts forcing it's way into the rifling of the barrel. If the edge of the brass is forced into the rifling it's being pinched onto the bullet much tighter and will create more pressure when firing. The best case scenario this leads to a damaged bullet and bad accuracy but worst case scenario is that this could lead to an over-pressure situation damaging the rifle and/or yourself. Each barrel is different and some rifles will accept crazy long brass and some require nothing less perfect minimum spec case length. There is a maximum/minimum case length listed on the reloading data and as long as the case is between those two measurements after resizing you'll be fine unless it's some crazy custom barrel. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask...and also thanks for watching!

    The brass should be resized before trimming. It will "grow" when resized because you are moving the brass. The extra brass goes into the length of the case.

      @deuceandguns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please see the video description.

    • @N5KDA
      @N5KDA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was referring to the part when you picked up a piece of brass that appeared not resized with the primer still in it. You trimmed it, maybe to resize later. When you resize it will "grow" again just like firing it. You know what happens when you fire and the brass flows. It flows again when resized. So, if that piece of brass with the primer still in is resized (it appears it wasn't) the brass will flow again. It may be short enough not to need to be trimmed a second time. I was just making the point that if you resized the brass then trim, you will trim more brass but the finished length will be correct.
      I'm sure you know this but someone new to the hobby,watching the video may not know to resize then trim.
      Thanks for the great video, and I have several of those (the cutter head and die bodies for each caliber) on my wish list. I've used the same Lyman universal trimmer since 1983. Man, that thing will put blisters on your fingers. I got the adapter to use it with a drill, many years ago now, when my two sons started shooting but it's still a PIA. I love the way the Lee cutter head trims, chamfers, and deburs in the same operation. As you seem to be well aware, brass prep is a very tedious and time consuming process. This appears to be a great piece of gear.

      I recommend it or the standard Lee Trimmers for the majority of shooters. If you're looking for super long rang (600yrd+) accuracy from your brass then you'll want to look elsewhere and spend much more but for the rest of us either works fine. The simple Lee case trimmers can be more accurate and less finicky than the quick trim but you'll lose that when you chuck it in a drill.

    If you trim before full length resizing it defeats the whole purpose. Your crimp will not be consistent (tighter or looser) and it will affect accuracy. If using a projectile with a cannelure, your seating depth will be erratic to the cannelure, again affecting the crimp.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      As noted previously this was simply a demonstration of the trimmer. Also, for 3-gun ammo all you need is safe ammo not sub 1" moa ammo. Trimming the brass will keep the neck out of the rifling then it can be run through a progressive press. 3-gunners run through a ton of ammo and rarely need to reach out beyond 50yds. For bench rifle shooting yes size before trimming but otherwise know your rifle, know your shot, and load accordingly. Thanks for watching.
