    What do bearing numbers mean? It's explained here
    electricalfundablog.com/identify-bearing-number-calculation-nomenclature/
    6 = Deep groove single ball bearing
    2 = Light duty
    02 = bore diameter 15 mm (about 5/8")
    From hours of research about a/c bearings I've learned that most window
    and wall air conditioner bearings are 6202 for larger units (larger
    motor with 15mm shaft) and 6201 for smaller units (smaller motor with
    12mm shaft).

      Thanks so much for doing the research for us just wish I knew what size shaft is on my GE 8,000 BTU so I can order the right bearings before disassembling it because I am using it right now as my central air puts out no cold air since using it on 113 degree days for a week

    Brilliant video... just ripped apart my 15 year old Frigidaire with plans to oil the bearings as a temporary fix until I ordered new ones.
    I'm super handy, appliances, cars, motorcycles and as a result I got "cocky", didn't trace my re-wiring steps and connected the blue wire to the wrong terminal on the board and fried the board and capacitor in the process....oh well.
    Haste makes waste folks... take pics along the way

    • @royberry7585
      @royberry7585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. I believe the schematic is on the inside of the outer case or on the side of the unit with the case off... (Not that it helps now...)

    • @totalnoobfishing1753
      @totalnoobfishing1753 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@royberry7585 Spot on Roy (THANKS), there is a schematic on the inside of the case and the blue wiring was really all that could get you confused as the terminals into the board are so close together in a cramped space. Since I replaced the unit, I kept the old one to "play", and I think the board can be replaced and the capacitor is toast, so now its a matter of sourcing these 15 year old parts, and shipping and bla bla bla, it just would not be practical being in the middle of summer sadly.
      A second lesson learned is that these units should be opened periodically for cleaning, as I never opened it for 15 years and could not believe the amount of black mold on the foam housing which is ultimately blowing those spores into your room when you run the AC.. it was shocking!!!

      Also, if you happen to accidentally get it stuck with the screen setup for Celsius, I believe you press the temp up and down or the fan up and down at the same time to put it back to Fahrenheit. Do it from the front, not the remote (I no longer have this model, not sure if it had one...)

    Thank you so so much!! I have a much smaller model but your step by step disassembly was incredibly helpful. Thanks for the note about the reverse threading on the back fan. After scouring the internet I decided to buy some rubber sealed skateboard bearings. They were like a buck each. My AC was disgusting because I’ve never fully disassembled it before so couldn’t reach in some areas. Thanks to your good instructions the noise level is acceptable again and I’m not quite so afraid to fix electrical motors. Frigidaire wanted $150 for a new motor. No thanks. $2 is much better. It’s a window ac after all.

Do I mark each wire so I know where each is connected to the Capacitor. I’m a little afraid to touch those wires.

    Thanks for the video, it was right on with the bearing service. I was able to source the bearings at a McGuire bearing supply house for $8 each in Portland, OR. They were easy to remove from the shaft and to replace. The new bearings are Japanese but appear to be identical to the Chinese made product that failed after just two years of very light service. The job was tedious but worthwhile.

      Yeah, it isn't for those unwilling to just say screw it and go all in. I was so glad they were replaceable when I pulled it apart. I believe I recorded that at like 2 AM in the morning after getting totally fed up with it.

  • @annettesurfer
    @annettesurfer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cleaning the AC is the usual cause of bearings needing replacement. Those top bracket screws usually don't need to removed because they merely screw into the case.

    • @TheWizechatmgr
      @TheWizechatmgr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on where one lives. I live in the great northeast so just the temperature changing during the day into evening tends to kill these bearings after a couple years due to humidity entering the bearing.

    When I do a service calls for these little units, I always replace the cheap rust prone OEM steel and tin screws for some stainless steel ones, that way, when your customers call you to come clean their unit. It’s a breeze disassembling them. The tools I use: a drill (just in case I have to break screws), long-ass Craftsman Phillips screwdriver (for the fan assembly screws holding it down on the pan), a small hammer (for the squirrel cage fan wheel & condenser fan slinger stuck on the fan motor shaft), grease (for bearings and squirrel cage wheel & condenser fan slinger shaft mounting), a set of easy out bits (for those rust worn, and stubborn screws that your screwdriver can no longer loosen), and last but not least, a long-ass Bosch drill bit extension (you might need it to break some hard to reach, rust-worn screws, on the bottom of the ac pan.

    • @royberry7585
      @royberry7585 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @danielthechskid
      @danielthechskid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure about the angle thing, while yes many are mounted wrong causing other issues like poor drainage and the condenser slinger not working, remember that ceiling fans have vertical shafts with the same type of sealed bearings and they are usually fine for many years.

    • @TheWizechatmgr
      @TheWizechatmgr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am totally unsure. Best way of finding out would be to tear that model down and inspect the bearings. The bearings used aren't unique - they're often used for other purposes including skate boards. As you can likely guess, very few, if any, manufacturers provide bearing replacement information because they'd much rather sell you an entire fan motor assembly. I think the total cost of replacing the bearings was $10, not including the time it took me.

      I ripped the motor apart and measured the bearings. If you remove them then any industrial supply place should be able to match them. Worse case scenario you lose the blower and the noise with it and have to replace the blower. Sometimes you can get it quiet for a little bit by removing the bearings and re-greasing them - but this won't last too long.

      +David barrientos You should be able to find them at any place that sells bearings to industry. You can also likely order them online. Be careful with installation and reassembly of the motor because if you set that back together wrong you can be electrocuted. I have purchased bearings from VXB.com for other projects and never had an issue.

    Here's a perfect video that shows the a/c motor, how to take it apart and how to remove/replace the bearings.

    My ac has a loud humming sound. How can I fix it?

    • @TheWizechatmgr
      @TheWizechatmgr  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it blow any air? If not, the blower motor may need a quick push. If it is blowing air, the compressor may have issues.

      TheWizechatmgr I throw it out and bought a new. It sounds like a water fall taking place inside.

    Does that bearing fit on all fridgidaire AC?

    • @TheWizechatmgr
      @TheWizechatmgr  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe so. You'd have to take it apart to verify. Unfortunately I only have two AC units, and the other isn't a Frigidaire.
