Chris and Maryanne...sorry my spelling may not be accurate. Since you already are in India...maybe you can drive to Pakistan next.
In the northern part of Pakistan, three mountain ranges converge and there are many beautiful valleys, lakes, glaciers, etc. And from the northern border with China, central Asian countries are within a days drive. Maybe there's a special visa just to drive from that border to a central Asian country!
Also central Pakistan, such as, city of Lahore has a lot of Mughal history and architecture. Near Rawalpindi are old ruins of Harappa with Buddhist stupas, etc.
I think you might enjoy the country's diversity and hospitality.

From Kolkata you should travel up north to the Jim Corbett national park.. There Wild Tigers roam and many cases of man eating tigers running wild .. mostly up north from there.. Many places in India has man eating leopards etc so as long as there is a lot of people around , they don't show. Jim Corbett is a nice place where you can enjoy the fresh air cleaned by so many trees and the sense of being in a truly wild place. You can read the stories of Jim hunting down the man eating tigers while you are there to add to your sense of reality. Just stay in a proper lodge at night .. Locals will alert you where the last tiger attack was by gesturing to you to leave the spot which could simply be at the road side or a scenic lookout area

On arrival in India travellers may be presented with garlands of marigolds to wear round their necks. I was told by a guide that the marigold garland was not only a welcome gift but a practical one as the marigolds help to deter flying insects who dislike the strong scent of the marigolds.

Got my wallets stolen not once but twice in Italy and also once in Spain, literally no other countries i have ever had this issue with, not a single country in Asia (Including India). Even in Ghana and Nigeria i was warned by the locals beforehand multiple times, so i complied with their advice, in Italy and Spain you are open target and issued no such warnings and locals could care less if you get robbed in broad-daylight they'll go on with their day usual, it's only contributing to their declining economies.

You came here & went straight to some really busy, chaotic, dodgiest locations on a walking tour. Maybe should have started with someplace a little more 'sane'. Maybe start with a mall visit (no joke) in this heat in india.
    You could try :
    - Park street - (a good place for a walking tour - especially the street with Flurries & bar-B-q)
    - Quest mall
    - boat ride in princep ghat
    - victoria memorial
    - Newtown - a great place for a walking tour, and you could cover a lot in there:
    Biswa bangla gate & restaurant
    bangla misti hub
    Eco park
The restaurant you went to - Arsalan is the best - you went to the right place.
Try their chicken/ paneer 'rolls' the next time.
